Convert each podcast episode to a consistent audio format, add a video layer, then send the output to YouTube over RTMPS. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. FFmpeg can perform the conversion, but a multi-file playlist is not one universal command: compatibility depends on the files, timestamps, containers, and your FFmpeg build. Test the complete sequence in YouTube Live before relying on it.
What the workflow needs
An audio podcast still needs a video stream for YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder setup, which lists video codecs alongside audio codecs. A static image encoded as video is one practical visual layer; it is separate from converting the audio.
- Podcast source files that FFmpeg can read.
- An FFmpeg build with the encoder you intend to use. You can inspect available encoders with
ffmpeg -encoders; the native AAC encoder is documented by FFmpeg, but availability depends on the installed build. - A video layer and an audio output in a format accepted by YouTube Live.
- A YouTube stream key and a short preflight test in YouTube Live.
FFmpeg’s command structure is ffmpeg [global options] {[input options] -i input} ... {[output options] output}. Options placed before an input apply to that input; output options apply to the output that follows. Changing a filename extension does not convert the underlying codec.
Choose consistent audio settings
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio. Its recommended advanced settings for stereo are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every input or encoder configuration will work without a test.

| Setting | Practical target for stereo | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 | Use an encoder available in your FFmpeg build. |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz | Apply the same target across episodes if you plan to combine them. |
| Bitrate | 128 kbps | Use a consistent target across episodes. |
| Channels | Stereo | Confirm that each episode has the expected channel layout. |
A conversion command should name the input, explicitly select the audio codec, set rate and channel options where needed, and write to a filename with the intended container extension. The exact command depends on the source and desired output; verify the codec and options against your installed FFmpeg build rather than assuming one command fits every file.
Prepare and convert the episodes
- Inspect the files. Check that FFmpeg can open each episode and note its codec, sample rate, channel layout, duration, and container. Files with different stream layouts or timestamps may not behave alike in a combined playlist.
- Select the output format. For an RTMP/RTMPS stream, choose AAC or MP3 and use YouTube’s recommended stereo rate and bitrate as a starting point.
- Convert one episode first. Use FFmpeg’s input, audio codec, rate, channel, and output options as appropriate for that file. Save to an output container matching the chosen format, then listen to the result and inspect its properties.
- Apply the same targets to the remaining episodes. Consistent codecs and stream layouts make a sequence easier to manage, but do not by themselves prove that arbitrary files can be joined or looped without problems.
- Keep originals and converted files separate. This makes it easier to identify a bad conversion and retry without overwriting the source recording.
Build and test the playlist
There is no single playlist or indefinite-loop command established here as reliable for every podcast collection. FFmpeg’s general conversion syntax does not resolve all the edge cases of concatenating arbitrary files. Behavior can depend on matching codecs, stream layouts, timestamps, and containers, as well as the installed FFmpeg build.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose a playlist method compatible with the actual files you converted; do not assume that a concat-list or stream-loop pattern will work unchanged for every collection.
- Run a short local test through the full sequence. Confirm that playback moves from one episode to the next, audio remains synchronized with the video layer, and no episode is skipped or repeated unexpectedly.
- Test the output with YouTube Live before scheduling a longer broadcast. YouTube recommends a test with audio and movement similar to the planned event and monitoring stream health.
- After the test, verify the live preview, sound, and stream health in YouTube Studio. Fix any issue before treating the playlist as ready for a continuous broadcast.
Send the stream to YouTube
For a basic FFmpeg workflow, use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends. Enter the YouTube stream key in the encoder output configuration and protect it as a credential: anyone with the key may be able to send a stream to your channel. Follow YouTube Live’s current encoder instructions for the destination URL and key handling, then watch the live preview and stream-health indicators during the test.
The documented RTMP/RTMPS setup includes a video codec—H.264, H.265, or AV1—as well as audio. An audio-only output is therefore not a complete fit for that setup; include a video layer, such as a static visual encoded as video.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS?
These are distinct YouTube ingestion routes, not interchangeable output labels. RTMP/RTMPS is the simpler focus for this workflow. HLS requires segmented output and HTTPS requests, so switching to HLS means changing the packaging and delivery method, not merely changing a URL.
| Route | Key requirements | Latency note |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP/RTMPS | A video codec plus supported audio; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Baseline for this guide. |
| HLS | TS segments; a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; no byte ranges; HTTPS POST/PUT; no encryption other than HTTPS. YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio and recommends 44.1 kHz stereo at 128 kbps. | YouTube’s HLS guidance notes higher latency than RTMP. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having permission to play a podcast file does not automatically establish that a live broadcast or an always-on replay complies with YouTube’s rules. Before streaming, confirm that you have rights to the music, clips, artwork, and other material in every episode, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies. Repeatedly replaying content does not itself make it original or eligible for monetization; channel eligibility is assessed under YouTube’s policies.

Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg cannot find an encoder: check
ffmpeg -encodersand use a build that enables the intended audio or video encoder. - YouTube does not accept the stream: confirm the selected ingestion route, stream key, supported audio codec, video layer, and encoder output settings; test again in YouTube Live.
- Audio drops out or changes between episodes: compare codecs, sample rates, channel layouts, and containers. Convert inconsistent files to a common target and test the sequence again.
- The playlist stops, skips, or fails at a transition: treat this as a file-compatibility or playlist-method issue, not as proof that every concat or loop command is universally valid. Test the exact files and method locally before going live.
- The live preview is unhealthy or silent: monitor YouTube stream health, inspect the audio and video output, and perform another short preflight test before scheduling.
