Wowza Streaming Engine can take an RTMP stream from an encoder or IP camera and make it available to WebRTC playback clients. The workflow is server-side: configure TLS and WebRTC signaling, enable WebRTC on a live application, publish the RTMP source, then use compatible codecs or transcode where needed.

What you need before you start

  • Wowza Streaming Engine 4.11 or later, with the latest configuration for your installed version.
  • A live application and a source that can publish RTMP into it.
  • TLS configured for the live application and signaling. Wowza requires encryption: signaling uses HTTPS or WSS, while WebRTC media uses DTLS-SRTP.
  • Reachable signaling and media ports between the server and playback clients.

These prerequisites and labels follow Wowza’s setup guide updated September 30, 2026. Confirm the procedure against the documentation for your installed version: Wowza WebRTC setup.

Configure Wowza for WebRTC playback

1. Set up TLS and signaling

  1. In WSE Manager, open the virtual host’s SSL/TLS configuration and configure an SSL/TLS host port for WebRTC WebSocket signaling.
  2. Select the WebRTC implementation. Wowza’s current guide identifies v2 as the current implementation selection; follow the guide matching your installation.
  3. Save the settings and restart the virtual host.

The configuration can also be made in VHost.xml. Use a valid certificate and a hostname playback clients can reach; the secure signaling URL later needs to match that certificate’s domain.

2. Enable WebRTC on the live application

  1. In WSE Manager, open the live application’s WebRTC setup.
  2. Enable Play WebRTC from Wowza Streaming Engine.
  3. Enable WebRTC publishing only if the application also needs to ingest WebRTC sources. Enable WHIP/WHEP only if you need those standards-based HTTP endpoints.
  4. Save and restart the application.

The XML alternative is setting the application’s <WebRTC><Enable> element to true. The exact controls can vary by Engine version.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Publish the RTMP source

Set the encoder or camera to publish to the Wowza live application using its normal RTMP publishing configuration. Verify in WSE Manager that the incoming stream is active and note the application and stream names. If the source is not arriving, resolve that RTMP ingest issue before testing WebRTC; WebRTC playback cannot serve a stream Wowza has not received.

Decide whether to transcode

RTMP ingest does not mean the incoming audio and video are automatically suitable for every WebRTC client. Compare the source codecs and video profile with the output your playback clients support. Wowza says transcoding is needed when the source audio codec, video codec, or video encoding profile differs from the WebRTC output.

Passthrough

Use passthrough when the source format is compatible with your clients and Wowza’s WebRTC path. A video-only passthrough workflow avoids transcoding startup time and its additional latency. Validate the format in the browsers and devices you actually support rather than assuming a codec label guarantees identical playback everywhere.

Transcoding

Wowza’s RTMP example begins with H.264 High-profile video and AAC audio, then transcodes to H.264 Main-profile video and Opus audio. Its example configures the application transcoder and a custom template. For compatibility, Wowza recommends no B-frames, H.264 at 720p/30 fps, and stereo Opus audio at 48 kHz. These are vendor recommendations, not universal guarantees or mandatory settings for every source.

Transcoding can improve compatibility, but Wowza notes that transcoded workflows have longer startup time and higher latency than a video-only passthrough workflow. Follow the vendor’s RTMP-to-WebRTC ingestion guide for the template and application-specific setup.

Test WebRTC playback

  1. Use Wowza’s hosted WebRTC test page or a production playback page.
  2. Enter a secure signaling URL in this form: wss://[ssl-certificate-domain-name]/webrtc-session.json. Replace the bracketed text with the certificate hostname; use the application and stream names that match the active RTMP ingest.
  3. Check playback from a client network and device representative of your audience. Confirm both audio and video, and check startup time and continuity.
  4. For production, host the playback page on a server using SSL/TLS. Wowza’s setup guide names the Wowza Flowplayer Real-Time Streaming (WebRTC) plugin as a production playback option.

Wowza lists HEVC/H.265, H.264, VP8, and VP9 for WebRTC video, and Opus (recommended), PCMU, and PCMA for audio. Browser-specific support still matters. Wowza Streaming Engine supports WebRTC audio and video but does not implement data channels for uses such as text chat. See its WebRTC workflow documentation.

Open the network path and plan for audience size

Wowza’s workflow reference lists these ports for its documented configuration:

Purpose Port or range
WSS signaling TCP 443
Default WebRTC media range UDP 6970–9999
Fallback-related configuration TCP 1935

Ensure the required ports, configured media address, and server network path are reachable from clients. Wowza also warns that endpoint-security deep packet inspection can cause stuttering; where applicable, configure bypasses for the relevant ports. Use the port guidance in the Wowza WebRTC workflow reference alongside your network and security policies.

Direct WebRTC delivery is aimed at one-to-few and few-to-few audiences; performance may suffer as connections grow. For one-to-many distribution, Wowza recommends considering HLS or MPEG-DASH after transcoding, which it says uses significantly less bandwidth than direct WebRTC delivery. Stream Targets can also deliver streams to CDNs or Wowza Video.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The RTMP stream is not available: Confirm the encoder publishes to the intended live application and that Wowza shows the stream as active. Check RTMP ingest before investigating WebRTC playback.
  • Signaling fails to connect: Check that TLS is configured, the playback URL uses wss://, the certificate hostname matches the URL, and TCP 443 is reachable. Verify that the virtual host was restarted after its signaling configuration changed.
  • Playback connects but has no audio or video: Compare the source codecs and video profile with client support. If they do not match the WebRTC output, configure transcoding; Wowza’s example maps AAC to Opus and H.264 High to Main.
  • Playback stutters or cannot receive media: Check reachability of the configured media address and UDP 6970–9999 range. Review firewall and endpoint-security inspection rules; Wowza identifies deep packet inspection as a possible cause of stuttering.
  • Startup feels slow or latency is higher than expected: Determine whether transcoding is enabled. It can be necessary for codec compatibility, but Wowza says it increases startup time and latency compared with video-only passthrough.
  • A larger audience degrades service: Reassess whether direct WebRTC fan-out fits the audience. For one-to-many delivery, consider transcoded HLS or MPEG-DASH instead.

Or let it run in the cloud

This Wowza workflow is for converting an RTMP source to WebRTC playback. If your separate goal is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera or deliver to WebRTC.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo to learn more, or start the free day.
