AWS Elemental MediaTailor can assemble a 24/7 linear channel from on-demand assets by composing their manifests into a continuous playback stream. It does not store or deliver the underlying video segments: those remain at your configured origin. The practical workflow is to prepare compatible assets, connect an origin, register sources and outputs, schedule programs, start the channel, and test its playback URL.
What MediaTailor channel assembly does
MediaTailor channel assembly is a manifest-only service: it retrieves manifests from an origin and composes a live, sliding manifest window that references media segments at that origin. It tracks manifest details needed to make transitions between assets play smoothly, but it does not transcode the assets or act as their storage origin. See AWS’s channel assembly overview.
A source location identifies the origin that hosts your assets. A VOD source represents an individual content item and its package configuration. A channel output exposes a playback format for a source group, and a schedule determines which programs play and in what order. AWS lists S3, web servers, CDNs such as CloudFront, and packaging origins such as MediaPackage as source-location options. Your origin must make the manifests and referenced media reachable to the service and playback path.
Prepare compatible video and manifests
Before creating a channel, make sure every intended asset has an accessible manifest and that the assets can be stitched into the same package configuration. Compatibility is not just a question of file format: MediaTailor derives duration and child-stream information from the manifests.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Within a package configuration, source variants need matching manifest-derived durations.
- Sources need the same number of child streams. Per-title or automated ABR packaging can produce incompatible durations or stream counts; AWS documents those cases as unsupported.
- AWS recommends an encoding template with a minimum segment length of one second.
- If you plan to add the documented VOD ad-break workflow, prepare a slate asset as well.
Check the requirements in AWS’s VOD source guidance before registering a large catalog. Fix manifest or packaging mismatches at the source rather than expecting channel assembly to re-encode them.
Create the source location and register assets
- Create a source location. In the MediaTailor console, create a source location with a name and the HTTP(S) base URL for your origin. Configure access appropriate to that origin; AWS documents optional SigV4 authentication for S3. The exact access settings depend on how your origin is secured. See Working with source locations.
- Add each VOD source. Under the source location, register each content item and provide the relative path to its manifest.
- Add package configurations. For each source, define the format, manifest location, and source group needed by your channel. AWS’s getting-started workflow covers HLS and DASH; create configurations for the formats your playback clients need.
- Verify the source group mapping. Keep track of which package configuration belongs to each source group; channel outputs are created to correspond to those groups. See AWS’s VOD sources guide.
Create the channel, outputs, and schedule
- Create a channel. Choose a channel name and playback mode. AWS’s getting-started tutorial uses loop mode for a continuously repeating lineup. Review the channel configuration guidance.
- Define outputs. Add an output for each required source group and format, such as HLS or DASH. The output format must match a package configuration available from the registered sources.
- Add programs to the schedule. In the console, create programs that reference the source location and VOD source, then arrange them in the desired order. A schedule controls the sequence of playback. AWS documents the console flow in Creating a program within a channel schedule.
- Choose transition behavior deliberately. Relative transitions sequence VOD programs; eligible linear-channel configurations can use absolute wall-clock transitions. The available choices depend on the channel configuration, so check the current console options and scheduling guidance rather than assuming every channel supports both.
- Add live programming if needed. MediaTailor can schedule live sources alongside VOD-to-live programming. Configure the live source separately and place it in the schedule using AWS’s live-source workflow.
Configure optional ad breaks
For a VOD program, the documented ad-break workflow uses a slate source and an offset. The slate duration sets the break length. The offset must be less than the program duration and must align to segment boundaries across all tracks; otherwise, the break may be skipped. Follow AWS’s ad-break and SSAI guidance for the channel configuration you are using.

Ad breaks can be personalized through MediaTailor ad insertion or another SSAI service. Configuring a break does not by itself establish that ad inventory will fill or generate revenue; those outcomes depend on the ad decision and delivery setup.
Start the channel and validate playback
- Start the channel from the MediaTailor console after the sources, outputs, and schedule are configured.
- Open the channel playback URL, as in the AWS getting-started tutorial.
- Test each intended output format in the actual target player and delivery path. The output endpoint alone does not establish compatibility with every player.
- Check transitions at program boundaries, and, if configured, verify live-source handoffs and ad-break offsets across the tracks your clients consume.
Choose the setup that matches your channel
- Origin and access: select an origin that can host and serve the manifests and segments, and configure access for that origin.
- HLS or DASH: provide the output format required by your player ecosystem; register matching package configurations and channel outputs.
- VOD loop or mixed schedule: use loop mode for a repeating VOD lineup, or schedule live sources alongside VOD when the programming requires it.
- Slate breaks or personalized SSAI: a slate and valid offsets establish break structure; personalization requires ad insertion integration.
- Relative or wall-clock transitions: use the transition behavior supported by your channel configuration and scheduling needs.
Troubleshooting common setup failures
A source or manifest cannot be reached
Confirm the source location base URL, relative manifest path, and origin access configuration. A registered source cannot work if its manifest or referenced media is inaccessible from the configured origin path.

Assets fail compatibility checks or transitions
Compare the manifest-derived durations and child-stream counts for assets in the same package configuration. Repackage incompatible assets; channel assembly does not transcode them to make mismatched manifests compatible.
An ad break is skipped
Check that the offset is shorter than the program and aligns with segment boundaries across every track. Also verify that the slate duration is the break length you intended.

The endpoint opens but playback fails in a target player
Validate that the player consumes the selected output format and test the complete delivery path, not only the URL in a browser. The AWS setup guidance does not establish a universal player compatibility matrix.

AWS’s getting-started tutorial gives an estimated active-channel fee of $0.10 per hour and says inactive channels are not charged. That is an estimate in AWS tutorial documentation, not a guaranteed current price; check the live AWS pricing page and the applicable region before budgeting. Your origin, delivery, packaging, and ad-insertion arrangements are separate considerations and are not priced by that tutorial estimate.
