You can create a YouTube campfire stream using a live webcam or an encoder that sends a composed image and crackling audio. To keep it available around the clock, you also need a way to keep the source running and recover from interruptions; YouTube’s setup guidance does not promise unattended 24/7 operation. Use footage and audio you own or are licensed to use, test the stream before launch, and decide whether to archive it.
Choose how to show the fire
YouTube supports several ways to go live, including webcam and encoder streaming. For a real fire that you are filming as it happens, a webcam can capture the scene directly. For a fixed image, prerecorded fire footage, animation, overlays, or a separately composed audio track, an encoder-based setup gives you a way to send that finished scene to YouTube. A webcam is not required for prerecorded or animated visuals.

Prepare the video and crackling audio
- Choose the source. Decide whether you will film a real fire, use original prerecorded footage, or create an animation.
- Confirm the rights. Use video and sound you created or have permission to use for both live streaming and any archive you plan to publish. A track described as “copyright-free” is not automatically cleared for every intended use; check its actual license.
- Compose the scene. For prerecorded or animated content, arrange the visual and crackling audio in the encoder workflow you choose. The specific software, computer, bitrate, resolution, and network capacity depend on your setup; YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish a universal recipe for this use case.
- Check the listening experience. Preview the audio and image before going public. For a sleep stream, listen for abrupt level changes, gaps, or distracting noises, and check that the picture is the one you intend viewers to see.
Meet YouTube’s live-stream requirements
YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. The stream must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance and confirm the channel’s status before planning a launch.

- Open YouTube’s live tools and start setting up a broadcast using your chosen method.
- Connect the webcam if you are capturing a live scene, or configure your encoder to send the composed scene and audio.
- Use the broadcast details and stream key provided in YouTube’s live setup. Keep the key private; anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Before sharing the stream, confirm that YouTube receives both the intended picture and audio.
Test before making it public
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streaming and advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A test should therefore include the actual crackling track and the same sort of image behavior you intend to use—not merely a silent still image if the final stream has audio.
- Check that the picture and sound reach YouTube and remain in sync during the test.
- Listen at a practical viewing volume for clipping, silence, or unwanted changes in level.
- For an animated or moving fire, test the movement; for a real camera, test the actual scene and lighting.
- Do not assume a successful test proves the stream will remain live unattended. The available YouTube guidance does not specify a 24/7 recovery setup, encoder settings, computer requirements, or network sizing for this particular stream.

Plan for copyright checks and interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder and warn you; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. This applies to the audio as well as the fire footage.
A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. If you have licensed material, ask the rights owner about allowlisting before relying on it in a long-running stream. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Decide whether to archive the stream
If you archive the broadcast, viewers may be able to watch it afterward, depending on your YouTube settings. An archive can also receive a Content ID claim after the live stream ends. If you do not archive it, that post-stream archive claim does not apply—but YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie stated on August 12, 2026, that unarchived livestreams do not count as qualified watch hours for the YouTube Partner Program. Public archived livestreams can count as a possible source of qualified watch hours; that is not a guarantee of channel acceptance or earnings. See the YouTube Official Blog explanation.
Keep the stream running around the clock
A 24/7 stream needs its video source and connection to remain active, along with a plan for what happens if the connection or YouTube stream drops. The YouTube sources cited here explain how to go live and the risk of content interruptions, but do not establish a turnkey unattended looping recipe or guarantee continuous operation. If you run your own encoder, plan how you will monitor it and restart or reconnect it after a failure; do not treat a one-time successful launch as proof that it will stay online.
