The command below is a starting pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted broadcasting: you still need compatible encoding settings, reliable upload, monitoring, and a plan for reconnects and long-session archives.
What you need before you start
- A Windows computer with FFmpeg installed and available in Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- A video file you have the rights to stream, with audio and video you have checked at the loop boundary.
- A YouTube channel with live-streaming access enabled.
- The stream URL and stream key for the stream you create or select in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube explains its encoder setup in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and its stream controls in Manage live stream settings.
Use a stream key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot or public log, or commit it to a source-code repository.
Prepare YouTube Live and choose settings
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and key from the encoder settings. Prefer the RTMPS URL when YouTube provides one: RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, and YouTube recommends encrypted delivery. Use the precise URL shown for your stream rather than constructing one yourself. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Choose output resolution, frame rate, video bitrate, and keyframe interval to fit both the source and YouTube’s current guidance. Also confirm your sustained upload capacity can support the selected bitrate; do not rely on a brief speed-test peak as proof of a stable 24/7 connection.
- Decide whether FFmpeg should re-encode or copy the source streams. Re-encoding lets you set a consistent output format and bitrate, but uses more processing. Stream-copying can reduce processing demand when the source already meets YouTube’s requirements, but compatibility, timestamps, and audio/video behavior at the loop point must be checked.
YouTube’s recommendations can change, and the correct settings depend on the particular source and output resolution. Consult its current table rather than assuming one bitrate or keyframe interval suits every video.
Run a basic infinite loop from Windows
Open Command Prompt or PowerShell, change the source path and ingest URL, then run this starting pattern:

Its bitrate and keyframe interval are illustrative, not universal recommendations: replace them with values appropriate to the source, frame rate, resolution, upload connection, and YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Replace the schematic RTMPS address with the exact URL from Live Control Room. Do not paste an actual key into a script you share or store in a public repository.
Why the input options go before the file
-re and -stream_loop are input options, so put them before the relevant -i. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping and -re as reading input at its native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. Real-time pacing matters here: without it, FFmpeg may process a file faster than its playback duration rather than sending it as a live-paced stream. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Keep the key out of a shared batch file
You can put a command in a Windows .bat file to make it easier to start, but a key written directly in that file is visible to anyone who can read it. One basic alternative is to keep the key in a Windows environment variable and reference it in the command; this reduces accidental exposure in the script, but environment variables are not a complete security boundary. Limit access to the machine and file, and rotate the stream key in YouTube if it is exposed.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start the stream as private or unlisted for a test. Wait for YouTube’s incoming preview or health indication before making a scheduled stream public or selecting the appropriate live control.
- Check picture, audio level, synchronization, and the transition where the file loops. Confirm the stream can be viewed on the devices and connections that matter to your audience.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and FFmpeg’s console output. Confirm the process is still running and the upload remains active; a command that started successfully is not proof that the stream will stay healthy.
- Only after the test succeeds should you use the setup for a public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; see YouTube live streaming tips for computer and Streaming tips.
Plan for disconnects and long broadcasts
FFmpeg or network interruption
A looping process does not restart itself after every possible failure. A brief ingest interruption may require reconnect handling; a process crash or Windows restart requires a separate process supervisor or scheduled task configured to restart it. FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer recovery pattern using -f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. Treat this as an option to adapt and validate with your installed FFmpeg build, not a plug-in guarantee: YouTube may not accept every reconnection as the same session, and FIFO recovery does not restart a crashed Windows process. Avoid running parallel encoders to the same stream key, and test recovery before relying on it. Details are in the FFmpeg muxer documentation.

Continuous live endpoint versus replay and rewind
Keeping an endpoint live, preserving a complete replay, and allowing viewers to rewind are different goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that is not a guarantee of a complete archive for a broadcast lasting 24 hours or longer. Separately, YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Plan session handling and archive retention around your needs rather than assuming one uninterrupted session provides a full replay and rewind. Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Recheck the exact RTMPS URL and stream key in Live Control Room, make sure they belong to the selected stream, and confirm the key has not been changed or exposed.
- FFmpeg stops or YouTube reports unstable health: Check the FFmpeg error output and sustained upload connection. Lower output demands or choose settings that fit the source and available upload capacity, then repeat the private test.
- Playback runs too quickly or is not paced like a live stream: Put
-rebefore the input file so FFmpeg reads it at native frame rate. - The video does not loop as expected: Check that
-stream_loop -1is before the relevant-i, and inspect the file’s end and beginning for abrupt audio or video transitions. - CPU use is too high: Re-encoding consumes processing. If the source streams already match YouTube’s supported settings and pass a test, try stream-copying; verify output compatibility and loop-boundary behavior rather than assuming every file can be copied unchanged.
- The live stream reconnects but the broadcast still fails later: FIFO recovery addresses some temporary output failures, not every YouTube session limit, Windows restart, or FFmpeg crash. Validate recovery behavior and arrange separate monitoring or restart handling.
- A long stream has no complete replay or rewind: Check the archive and DVR limits separately. YouTube’s stated 12-hour guidance concerns automatic archiving for streams under that duration and DVR behavior for streams longer than it; neither establishes a complete 24-hour replay.
Rights and YouTube policy
Only stream video, music, and other material you have permission to broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance also requires compliance with its Community Guidelines. A file looping technically correctly does not establish that you have the necessary rights or that the content complies with platform rules. Review YouTube’s live streaming tips before broadcasting.
