Use OBS Studio to mix your music, background visuals and an audio-reactive waveform, then send the finished scene to YouTube Live. For an actual 24/7 broadcast, plan for monitoring and recovery: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a single uninterrupted 24-hour session. [YouTube Help]
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: it must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of launch. [YouTube Help]
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and a stable upload connection capable of sustaining your chosen output settings.
- Music and visuals you have the right to broadcast. A consumer subscription to a music service does not, by itself, establish livestream or rebroadcast rights.
- The OBS resource Waveform, which draws a waveform, frequency-spectrum graph or meter from an OBS audio source. The listing accessed in 2026 names Windows, macOS and Linux support and OBS 27.0.0 as the minimum version; check its current compatibility details before installing.
OBS is free and open source, with scenes, source mixing, audio filters, plugins and scripts. YouTube supports sending a broadcast through software or hardware encoders by entering its server URL and stream key in the encoder. [OBS Project] [YouTube Help]
Build the music-radio scene in OBS
1. Add the program audio
Create a scene in OBS, then add the source that will play your cleared music. Confirm that the audio meter moves when music plays and that the program is routed to the stream mix. If you use a playlist or a player on the same computer, test what happens when one track ends and the next begins; a 24/7 stream needs continuous playback as well as a continuous encoder.
2. Add a background and optional branding
Add a static image or a looped background video, then position any channel name, schedule or other branding. A static image is sufficient for a waveform to react to the music. Keep the visualizer and text clear of one another, and check the composition at the output resolution rather than only in the OBS preview.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Add and route the waveform
Install the Waveform resource using its current instructions, then add its visualizer to the scene. Configure it to listen to the same OBS audio source that carries the music—not an unused microphone or desktop-audio source. Play a representative track and verify the waveform or spectrum responds. Adjust its size and position so it remains visible without covering important text.
Choose encoder settings YouTube can ingest
In OBS output and video settings, select a resolution and frame rate your system and upload connection can sustain. For a music radio scene, a static background with a moving waveform does not inherently require 60 fps; choose the frame rate that fits your visual design and available bandwidth. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Supported encoder options listed by YouTube include H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. [YouTube Help]
YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations below are not a guarantee of the upload speed or quality available to an individual creator. They vary by resolution, frame rate and codec. Leave connection headroom rather than setting the video bitrate at the full measured upload rate.

| Output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help recommendations accessed in 2026. If the stream drops frames or reports poor health, reduce the bitrate or output resolution and test again; a higher setting is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, then use the Stream tab to find the server URL and stream key. The exact Studio layout can change.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the server URL and stream key from Studio. Treat the stream key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Start the encoder in OBS. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when ready. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators as the feed begins.
- Listen to the broadcast, not just the local source: confirm the music is audible, the waveform moves, the picture is correct and there is no unexpected silence or clipping.
YouTube documents a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. [YouTube Help]
Make it a genuinely continuous 24/7 broadcast
“24/7” is an operating goal, not a guarantee in YouTube’s cited guidance. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that a single broadcast longer than 12 hours will be fully archived. If you need archives, plan broadcast sessions accordingly and check current Studio behavior before relying on it. [YouTube Help]

A local OBS setup depends on the computer, audio playback, OBS process, power and internet connection remaining healthy. Assign someone to check the stream and have a recovery procedure: identify whether playback, OBS, the connection or YouTube ingestion stopped; restore the affected part; then confirm the preview and stream health again. Test the procedure before treating the channel as continuously operated.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, and checking stream health. That matters for a radio scene too: test track transitions, waveform response, and what viewers see during quiet or static passages. [YouTube Help]
Clear music rights before you stream
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material. A match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder; if the material continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. For licensed third-party material, YouTube says the rights holder should add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Its guidance warns that a stream can still be interrupted even when the creator has a license if the channel is not allowlisted. [YouTube Help]

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Waveform is flat while music plays | The visualizer is assigned to the wrong audio source, or the source is not reaching the OBS mix. | Check the source selected by Waveform, then confirm the music source’s OBS meter moves during playback. |
| YouTube receives video but no music | OBS audio routing, mute state or selected output track is wrong. | Check the music source meter, mute controls and OBS audio output/track configuration; listen to the stream preview. |
| Stream health is poor or the feed disconnects | The chosen bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity, or the local connection is unstable. | Reduce bitrate or resolution, retest on the actual connection and monitor health before leaving the stream unattended. |
| OBS sends, but the scheduled broadcast has not appeared to viewers | The encoder preview is present but the scheduled stream has not been started in Live Control Room. | Check the Studio preview and select Go live for the scheduled broadcast when it is ready. |
| Broadcast is interrupted after music begins | A Content ID match or rights issue may have triggered YouTube’s live-stream protections. | Review Studio notices, stop using the disputed material, and resolve rights or allowlisting with the rights holder before restarting. |
| First-time live setup is unavailable | Channel verification or activation is incomplete, or a recent restriction applies. | Check channel verification and live eligibility; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. |

FAQ
Does the waveform come from YouTube?
No. OBS draws it from the audio source in your scene; YouTube receives the composed video and audio feed.
Can I use a static background?
Yes. A static image can sit behind an audio-reactive waveform; a looped background video is optional.
