You can run a 24/7 YouTube radio stream from a Hetzner Linux server by combining an audio source with a still image in a continuously running encoder, then sending the resulting video to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The workflow is: confirm your channel can livestream, provision a public-facing server with narrowly configured access, configure and test the encoder, and plan for monitoring and recovery. Hetzner supplies the server; you remain responsible for the software, media rights, and ongoing operation.
Before you begin: check YouTube eligibility and your audio rights
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. You must be at least 16 to livestream. Check the current eligibility requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming help.
- Decide what audio the stream will play and confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast it. Owning a recording or finding it online does not, by itself, establish permission to livestream it.
- Check current YouTube Live Control Room behavior and rules for continuous streams before relying on a single event to run indefinitely. YouTube’s documentation recognizes 24/7 channel-feed scenarios, but does not promise that one live event can remain open forever or establish the current archive limits for every continuous stream.
- Have a computer with SSH access available for administering the server. It does not need to stay on for the stream after the encoder is running in the cloud.
How the setup works
The server runs an encoder that combines two inputs: your audio source and a still artwork image. It encodes and muxes them as a live video stream, then sends that stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Although the artwork does not move, YouTube receives a live video feed with an audio track.
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure delivery of ordinary user content. Its encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; treat the key as a credential and do not publish or share it.
1. Prepare the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Confirm that livestreaming is enabled for the channel.
- Create or configure the live stream and select the encoder workflow. Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room into your encoder configuration. Keep the key private; if it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube before continuing.
- Set the stream’s title, audience settings, visibility, and other event details in YouTube. Confirm the event is configured as intended before sending the encoder feed.
YouTube’s encoder setup and live-control guidance is available in its Help Center. Menu labels can change, so follow the current Live Control Room screen if it differs from the steps above.

2. Provision a Hetzner Cloud server
- In the Hetzner Cloud Console, create a server, choose a Linux image, and select a server plan. Assign a Primary IP so the machine has public network connectivity for administration and its outbound connection to YouTube.
- Choose a location based on where you will administer the server and the audience you expect to serve. Hetzner lists locations in Europe, the United States, and Singapore and recommends a nearby location for smaller projects. Availability can change; check the current location documentation.
- Configure a Cloud Firewall to allow only the inbound administration traffic you need, such as SSH from a trusted address. Hetzner says inbound traffic not matched by a rule is blocked; if no outbound rules are configured, outbound traffic is permitted. The encoder needs an outbound network path to YouTube, so check the current firewall and encoder requirements before adding restrictive outbound rules.
- Save the server details and connect over SSH. Apply operating-system updates and use the server’s normal account and access controls before installing the encoder software.
Hetzner documents server creation and available configuration choices in its Cloud server overview. The provider supplies compute, networking, and storage; it does not configure or operate the broadcast for you.
3. Configure an encoder for still artwork and audio
Choose an output profile
Use a continuously running encoder process that reads the audio source, holds the artwork as a still video track, and sends the combined output to the YouTube server URL with your stream key. YouTube’s published RTMP(S) guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds).

Bitrate depends on output resolution and frame rate; YouTube publishes different ranges for those combinations. Choose a profile from its current live encoder settings rather than treating one bitrate as a universal requirement for radio. A static image usually involves little visual motion, but YouTube does not publish a special low-motion radio preset in that guidance. Any profile you select is a configuration choice, not a guaranteed or independently tested setting.
YouTube states: “YouTube will automatically detect which encoder settings you chose. YouTube will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” That does not remove the need to choose an appropriate input profile or test your own audio and network path.

Build the process around your media
Prepare an artwork image and an audio source the encoder can read continuously. If you want a rotation of tracks, arrange the audio source or playlist so it advances as intended and check how it behaves at the end of the list. Your exact encoder command depends on the audio format, image format, playlist behavior, codec choices, and how you store the YouTube stream key.
The YouTube and Hetzner guidance cited here does not prescribe an FFmpeg command, a process supervisor unit, reconnect flags, or playlist-rotation configuration. Do not copy a command intended for a different media format or assume that an encoder restarts itself after a failure. Consult current FFmpeg documentation for the selected inputs and outputs, and validate the process with your own media before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

4. Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room for its preview and stream-health information before making the event public.
- Verify the artwork is visible, the audio is audible and in sync, the correct event is receiving the feed, and the intended audience can access it.
- Monitor stream health and confirm the process behaves as expected through a controlled interruption. A successful initial connection alone does not show how your configuration will recover from a server, network, source-file, or YouTube ingest interruption.
- After testing, establish a way to check the server and encoder process periodically. YouTube’s LiveStreams resource exposes stream status and health information for supported integrations; it is not a substitute for confirming what viewers hear and see.
Recovery: distinguish a server backup from stream failover
Hetzner offers daily backups and manual snapshots that can help restore server disk state. Its documentation describes seven daily backup slots per server; manually created snapshots remain until deleted. Attached volumes are excluded, so media or configuration kept on a volume needs its own backup plan. See Hetzner’s backup and snapshot documentation for current details.
A backup or snapshot is a recovery aid, not broadcast failover: restoring a server image does not keep an active stream online while the server is unavailable. Plan separately for how you will notice an outage, restart or repair the encoder, and restore any media or configuration that is not included in the server image.

Costs and capacity to check before choosing a server
Do not size the server from a generic minimum: the official setup material does not establish a minimum vCPU or RAM requirement for this audio-and-image encoding workload. Actual resource use depends on your input formats and output profile. Hetzner says resources continue to be billed while a server exists, even when powered off, and that outgoing traffic is billed under its Cloud billing model. Current server prices, public IPv4 terms, traffic allowances or charges, and backup costs can change, so check the live Hetzner Cloud pricing before estimating a monthly total. Hetzner says cross-zone traffic is billed like other internet traffic.
Compare candidate configurations against the resolution and bitrate you intend to send, available network capacity, and the amount of outbound data the stream will use. YouTube advises testing the connection and publishes bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate; the appropriate choice is not determined by the artwork alone.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Confirm that Live Control Room is set to the intended encoder event, and check that the server URL and stream key were copied correctly. Treat the key as a secret and replace it if it may have been exposed.
- The preview appears but has no sound: Check that the encoder is reading the intended audio input, that the input is advancing, and that the output includes AAC or MP3 audio. Listen to the preview before making the event public.
- The picture is missing or the stream is not accepted: Check that the artwork is being supplied as the still video input and that the selected codec, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- The stream stops after an interruption: Determine whether the encoder process stopped, its media source became unavailable, the server lost connectivity, or YouTube stopped ingesting. Restart and recovery behavior depends on your process configuration; snapshots do not provide live failover.
- SSH or another expected inbound connection fails: Check that the server has a Primary IP and that the Cloud Firewall allows the required inbound administration traffic from your source address. Do not open unrelated ports as a troubleshooting shortcut.
- Costs exceed the estimate: Review whether the server still exists while powered off, outgoing traffic, public IP terms, and any backup or snapshot usage against Hetzner’s current billing information.
