You can’t make a YouTube stream by pasting in a Google Drive folder URL. Instead, make the folder’s authorized video files available to a playlist, then send that playlist through a continuously running encoder to YouTube Live. The encoder can run on a computer you keep on, or you can use a cloud service that plays uploaded videos. In either case, YouTube receives an encoded live feed—not the Drive folder itself.
What you need for a 24/7 stream
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take time, so check that the channel is ready before planning your launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Video files you have permission to use and can access for playback. Drive access permissions may prevent a file from being downloaded.
- A playlist process and an encoder that can play the files continuously and publish to YouTube Live.
- A reliable connection and a plan to monitor playback, the encoder, and the stream. A local setup depends on the computer and network staying available; it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
YouTube’s documented route is to stream with an encoder. Its official materials do not describe a native feature that takes a Drive folder URL and broadcasts its contents on repeat.
Choose where the playlist and encoder will run
Run it yourself on a computer
A local encoder gives you direct control over file access, playlist order, and stream settings. The computer must stay on, remain connected to the internet, and keep the playlist and encoder process running. You are responsible for restarts, monitoring, and recovery after interruptions. A dedicated computer or mini PC is optional workflow hardware, not a YouTube requirement.
Use a managed cloud service
A cloud service can reduce dependence on a computer and home connection, but check its capabilities before relying on it: can it access your Drive files, loop or schedule them, connect to YouTube, and recover if playback or the stream stops? Confirm how it handles new or changed files, monitoring, and support. The official platform documentation does not establish a particular service that combines those features.

Prepare video files from Google Drive
For a manual workflow
Download the videos you intend to broadcast, then make them available to the playlist player or encoder. Check that your account can download each file and that the files play correctly in your chosen software. Keeping a playback copy available to the encoder helps prevent a temporary Drive access problem from emptying the queue.
For an automated Drive API workflow
- Authorize access to the Drive folder and list its files. Google documents the files.list method for listing files and the Drive search guide for finding files and folders.
- Retain each file’s ID and relevant metadata, and handle pagination so a large folder is not silently cut off.
- Download binary video files using the documented
alt=mediaapproach in Google’s download and export guide. Drive-native documents have different export and download behavior, and download permissions can restrict access. - Make the retrieved files available to the playlist process. Decide whether new or changed Drive files should be added manually or fetched by your automation; a folder listing alone does not publish them to YouTube.
Build and test the repeating playlist
- Choose the playback order and verify that repeat or loop behavior is enabled in your player or playlist process.
- Play through the start, transitions, and end of the playlist. Check for gaps, unexpected silence, incompatible files, or playback that stops rather than returning to the beginning.
- Keep an accessible copy of the files where the encoder can read them. Drive retrieval and YouTube ingestion are separate steps, so a Drive outage or permission change can interrupt the source playback.
- Decide how you will notice and respond if playback or the encoder stops. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; round-the-clock alerts and restart procedures are additional operational measures for a continuous stream.
Create the YouTube live stream and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream. The exact controls can change, so follow the current prompts in the YouTube live-streaming guide.
- Copy the stream’s ingestion details from YouTube into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public playlist, or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Prefer RTMPS when configuring the encoder. YouTube says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Start the encoder and check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before making the broadcast public or relying on it for continuous playback.
Choose encoder settings that your connection can sustain
Use the video and audio settings supported by your encoder, and choose an output resolution and bitrate that your connection can maintain continuously. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
The H.264 recommendations below are YouTube encoder-ingest settings, not a promise of the quality every viewer will receive. YouTube also publishes codec-specific ranges for AV1 and H.265; those ranges should not be confused with these H.264 recommendations.

| Output setting | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are starting points from YouTube’s settings guidance. Choose a lower resolution or bitrate if your sustained upload capacity cannot support the selected output reliably. For additional setup advice, see YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Keep the stream healthy and follow YouTube’s rules
Test the complete path before leaving the stream unattended: Drive file access, playlist looping, audio continuity, encoder output, and YouTube’s preview and health indicators. For a long-running broadcast, monitor for stopped playback, lost network, encoder failure, and stream interruption; decide in advance who or what will restart the process. YouTube’s event-oriented checklist does not itself provide a guarantee of 24/7 operation.
Only broadcast content you are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and channel status before starting. A folder being accessible in Drive does not grant broadcast rights. YouTube’s channel eligibility and live-stream restrictions are described in its live-streaming requirements.

Troubleshoot common failures
The channel cannot go live
Check that the channel is verified and has no live-stream restriction within the previous 90 days. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take time; confirm readiness before the planned start.
The playlist is empty or missing files
Check the folder authorization, each file’s download permission, and whether the file listing handled all pages of results. For API downloads, confirm that the request is retrieving binary content rather than treating a Drive-native document as a video.
The encoder cannot play a file
Test the file in the selected playback software and replace it with a compatible copy if necessary. The platform references do not establish that every format in an arbitrary Drive folder will play in every encoder.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Confirm that the encoder uses the current ingestion details for the selected YouTube live event, that the stream key was entered correctly, and that the connection is stable. Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream health rather than assuming that successful Drive playback means the YouTube feed is live.
The stream stops after running for a while
Determine whether playback ended, the encoder closed, or the network failed. Check repeat behavior, file availability, computer sleep or restart settings on a local setup, and your alert or recovery process. A continuous stream needs operational monitoring; the playlist alone cannot restart a failed encoder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Google Drive folder link work as a YouTube live source?
No. You need a playlist process and encoder or a service that plays uploaded video files and sends an encoded feed to YouTube Live.
Can every video in my Drive folder be streamed?
Not necessarily. File access permissions and playback compatibility depend on the files and the software or service you use; test each video in the playback path.
