You can create a 24/7 YouTube TV-style channel by arranging videos into a continuous programming feed and sending that feed to YouTube through an encoder. A YouTube playlist organizes videos for viewers; it does not, by itself, turn them into a continuous livestream. You need a playout workflow to move from one video to the next, a YouTube broadcast, and an encoder or cloud service to deliver the feed.
What makes a YouTube channel feel like TV?
A TV-style YouTube channel is a continuous livestream with programming that plays in sequence, rather than a public playlist page. In YouTube’s model, a stream carries the encoder’s audio and video feed, while a broadcast is the viewer-facing live event associated with that feed. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents both resources and their relationship: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
The playlist is your programming source. You must have a playout system assemble the videos into one continuous audio-video output; YouTube’s official guidance describes how to schedule and ingest a live feed, but does not document a native feature that automatically turns a playlist into a 24/7 livestream.
What you need before you start
- Authorized video and audio: Use content you have the rights to livestream worldwide, including relevant music rights.
- A programming sequence: Decide what plays, in what order, and what should follow when a video ends. Plan for the feed to continue rather than stop at the end of a playlist.
- A playout and encoding path: Something must assemble the videos into continuous audio-video output and send it to YouTube. This can involve software or hardware encoding, or a cloud service.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See its live streaming tips.
- A stream key: This credential lets your encoder send content to your channel. Treat it like a password and do not share it.
How to create the continuous channel
1. Plan your schedule and clear the rights
Choose videos you are entitled to rebroadcast and define their rotation. Include any transitions or breaks your programming needs. YouTube’s livestream terms make the rights obligation explicit: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Owning or being able to play a video does not by itself establish that you have livestreaming rights to all of its components.

2. Build one uninterrupted programming feed
Arrange the cleared videos in your chosen order and configure your playout workflow to pass continuously from one item to the next. The output needs to be a single ongoing audio-video feed for the encoder. A YouTube playlist can help organize or present videos, but it is not a substitute for that feed or the automation that advances the programming.
Decide how the sequence will continue if its last item ends. A repeating rotation, for example, needs to return to its first item without ending the output. The specific playlist automation system is a separate choice; the official YouTube sources here do not verify particular products or their compatibility.
3. Schedule a live broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Select Manage, then Schedule Stream.
- Create a stream or reuse settings, then enter the broadcast details and schedule.
- Share the scheduled watch-page URL if you want viewers to find the stream ahead of time or set a reminder.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains scheduling and stream setup. Scheduling creates the viewer-facing event; it does not create the programming feed.

4. Connect the encoder and start sending the feed
Copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key from the stream setup, then enter both in your encoder or streaming service. Configure it to send the continuous output you built in step 2. YouTube describes the stream key as the address and password that allow an encoder to send content to your channel, so store it securely and reset it if it is exposed.

Confirm that both picture and sound are present and that the correct feed is going to the scheduled event. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends preparing and checking the encoder before the event rather than waiting until its scheduled start.
5. Monitor the live feed
Check that the video advances as intended, audio remains audible, and the watch page is accessible on desktop and mobile. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Its event guidance recommends setting up an encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start; these are recommendations for event preparation, not mandatory technical thresholds for every continuous channel.

Choose a setup that can actually stay on
Your central operational choice is how to run the playout and encoder continuously. A computer-based setup gives you direct control but depends on that machine, its power, its internet connection, and your ability to recover it if something stops. Hardware encoding is another possible route, particularly for higher-production streams, but YouTube’s guidance does not make a particular model necessary or establish that a device automates playlist rotation.
YouTube also offers API resources for managing broadcasts and streams. The API requires authorization from the channel owner. Its documentation explains that a stream can be reused for scheduled broadcasts when only one event is live at a time, and describes using a continuing 24/7 feed alongside a separate broadcast for a subset of that feed: Live Streaming API overview and LiveBroadcasts API reference. That is a developer-oriented management path, not a ready-made playlist scheduler.

For a custom HLS encoder workflow
YouTube’s HLS ingestion instructions require a conforming media playlist and segments, muxed audio and video, HTTPS, and supported codecs and containers. These are ingestion requirements for a custom encoder workflow, not a consumer-ready recipe for scheduling a playlist. Plan separately for recordings and replays
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete, reliable replay: the cited guidance does not promise a complete automatic archive for a 24-hour stream. If replay files matter, plan separate recordings or consider shorter programming blocks, and check the current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on automatic archiving.
Common problems and fixes
The playlist ends and the stream stops
Likely cause: The playlist is a finite sequence and the playout workflow has no repeat or next-item behavior. Fix: Configure the programming sequence to continue after its final item and verify the transition in a preview before scheduling a long run.
YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed
Likely cause: The encoder has an incorrect server URL or stream key, or is not sending the configured output. Fix: Copy the current URL and key from the intended stream in YouTube Studio, check the encoder’s connection status, and preview the feed in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.

The broadcast is scheduled but viewers do not see the expected video
Likely cause: Scheduling the broadcast was mistaken for starting the encoder or assembling the programming feed. Fix: Confirm that the playout workflow is running, the encoder is sending to the correct scheduled event, and the incoming preview shows the intended output.
The stream is interrupted or quality degrades
Likely cause: The encoder, machine, connection, or source workflow has stopped or become unstable. Fix: Monitor the watch page and encoder, identify which part of the chain failed, and restore the feed at that point. YouTube advises preparing the encoder and continually checking video and audio quality; it does not guarantee that your playout setup will recover automatically.
A 24/7 stream does not yield a complete archive
Likely cause: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a complete 24-hour replay. Fix: Record separately or break the programming into shorter streams if you need dependable replay files.
