1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo make a recurring church YouTube stream start and stop when you operate your encoder, enable Auto-start and Auto-stop in YouTube Live Control Room. Save the stream URL and a reusable stream key in your encoder. These settings do not restart OBS or another encoder after a crash, power loss, or internet outage; that requires a separately tested recovery or backup setup.
Set up Auto-start and Auto-stop for a recurring service
- Open the encoder workflow. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then use the encoder stream workflow. Create or select the service stream. If you plan to reuse the same encoder configuration, choose a reusable or custom stream key. A stream key authorizes the encoder to send video to YouTube, so keep it private and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Enable the stream controls. In the stream settings, turn on Auto-start and Auto-stop. When enabled, these let the encoder start and stop the YouTube stream. If you create a new service stream with Reuse settings, check both toggles afterward: YouTube says that action copies their selections, but it is worth verifying the result.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the YouTube stream URL (server address) and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Select the appropriate audio and video inputs, then configure resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit your equipment and the upload connection. YouTube’s current recommendations and resolution-specific bitrate table are on its live encoder settings page.
- Test the signal before the service. Start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. Check stream health, picture, and sound. With a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow calls for waiting for the preview and clicking Go live when you are ready; the precise start sequence depends on the stream settings and workflow.
- End the stream deliberately. Stop the encoder or stop sending content. With Auto-stop on, the encoder can control the stream stop. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder streaming workflow.
What the automatic settings do—and don’t do
What they do
Auto-start and Auto-stop let the encoder start and stop the YouTube stream. They are useful for recurring services because you can save a reusable stream key and encoder setup, then use Reuse settings when creating another stream. A scheduled stream can also provide a shareable watch page and viewer reminders.
What they don’t establish
The settings are not a documented restart mechanism for OBS or another encoder. YouTube’s guidance does not promise that the platform will relaunch an encoder after the program crashes, reboot a computer after a power cut, restore a failed ISP connection, or preserve an uninterrupted watch page after signal loss. Treat those as separate recovery problems. If continuity matters, plan a backup path and test it rather than assuming the toggles provide disaster recovery.
Choose a reliability approach that fits the church
| Approach | What it helps with | What it does not solve by itself | Operator considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| One encoder with YouTube Auto-start/Auto-stop | Starts and stops the YouTube stream when the encoder operates; reusable settings simplify recurring setup. | Encoder crashes, computer or power failure, and internet outages. | Someone should check the preview and stream health before the service. No second encoder is required just to enable the toggles. |
| Primary and backup encoders with rehearsed failover | Provides a planned alternative if the primary encoder or its connection fails, depending on the configuration and failure being tested. | It is not a guarantee against every failure, and YouTube’s guidance does not quantify uptime or a reliability advantage. | Requires additional equipment or setup and a real rehearsal. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a test to check that playback rolls over to the backup. |
Use the simplest arrangement that meets the service’s continuity needs, but do not call a single encoder’s Auto-start setting an automatic crash restart. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover; its streaming tips describe preparation and testing.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare and test before the service
YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams at least 2 hours before the event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before it. These are preparation recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.
- Check that the Live Control Room preview appears and that stream health is acceptable before going live.
- Confirm the event from the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.
- Monitor both audio and video quality, and verify any local recording files if you are recording locally.
- Test a backup encoder in advance if you depend on failover. YouTube suggests stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable and checking that the player switches to the backup.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the actual service. Choose settings the upload connection can sustain; YouTube recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate.
Encoder settings that affect a stable stream
Use YouTube’s current resolution-specific bitrate guidance rather than guessing a value: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. The page lists RTMP and RTMPS, supported codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

- Pick a resolution and frame rate the camera, encoder, and internet connection can sustain consistently.
- Set bitrate according to YouTube’s table for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then test the real service-like content.
- Use a 2-second keyframe interval where possible and do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Use CBR and RTMPS where supported by the encoder.
- Repeat the test after changing equipment, encoding settings, or the network connection.
Troubleshoot a stream that doesn’t start or recover
- Encoder is sending, but YouTube does not start: confirm Auto-start is on for this stream, not just an earlier one. If you used Reuse settings, inspect both Auto-start and Auto-stop. Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key.
- No preview in Live Control Room: check that the encoder is running, the selected audio/video inputs are active, and the network can upload at the configured bitrate. Recheck the stream URL and key, then try a lower sustainable resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot hold the current settings.
- The stream ends when the encoder stops: that is expected when Auto-stop is enabled. It does not indicate that YouTube will relaunch the encoder for the next service or after a crash.
- OBS or the computer crashes: YouTube’s Auto-start/Auto-stop toggles do not establish automatic encoder recovery. Restart the encoder or use a separately configured backup/failover arrangement, then rehearse that recovery before relying on it.
- The internet or power fails: the stream may lose its feed. The cited YouTube guidance does not promise automatic recovery from either outage. Plan an appropriate network or power backup if needed and test the complete path.
- Stream key may be exposed: reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration. Do not share the key in screenshots, public documents, or chat.
Copyright and the service recording
Use music, video, and other material only when the church has the rights or permissions needed for a YouTube livestream and any archive. Auto-start does not change YouTube’s copyright rules. Confirm permissions for recorded music and other third-party content before the service, and review YouTube’s applicable policies for the specific material you plan to use.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a church that wants a prerecorded service or other uploaded video to loop on YouTube without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed.
