Create a Roblox game—officially called an experience—in Roblox Studio: build a small level, add Luau scripts for custom gameplay, test it, then publish it. Studio is free, but making an experience publicly available is a separate step from publishing and depends on Roblox’s current account and audience requirements.
What you need to make a Roblox game
- A Roblox account and a Windows or Mac computer. Roblox Studio is the creation tool; the Roblox player app is for playing experiences, not building them.
- Roblox Studio, which Roblox offers for free. The current installation documentation lists Windows 10 or macOS 10.14 as minimum operating systems, 3 GB RAM minimum and 8 GB recommended. Check the official installation requirements for current details.
- A small first project. An obby (obstacle course), maze, coin-collection game or one-room survival challenge is more manageable than an open-world RPG or full simulator.
You can build a simple map without writing code, but custom mechanics generally require scripting in Roblox’s Luau language. A phone or tablet is not a substitute for Studio’s supported Windows and Mac desktop workflow.
Install Studio and start a project
- Go to Roblox’s Studio installation page and select Download Studio.
- Open
RobloxStudio.exeon Windows orRobloxStudio.dmgon Mac, then follow the installer. - Launch Studio and sign in to your Roblox account.
- Choose a starting project. Baseplate gives you an empty scene to learn the tools; a template such as Platformer gives you an existing structure to inspect and modify. Templates can change over time.
Roblox calls the overall game an experience; each individual map or scene is a place. A new experience starts with one place and can later include more. See Roblox’s guide to publishing games and places.

Find your way around Studio
- Viewport: the 3D world where you build and inspect the experience.
- Explorer: the hierarchy of parts, scripts and services in the project.
- Properties: settings for the selected object, such as its size, position, material and collision behavior.
- Toolbox: Creator Store and inventory assets you can add to a project.
- Output: script errors and debugging messages. Open it when a mechanic does not work as expected.
- Test controls: launch a play session, test near the current camera position or simulate different devices and multiple clients.
Studio combines building, scripting, testing and publishing tools. Its panels and capabilities are described in the Studio documentation.

Build a small playable level
- Insert a Part and use Move, Scale and Rotate to make a starting platform.
- In Properties, set
Anchoredtotruefor scenery and platforms that should stay in place. An unanchored part can fall or react to physics. KeepCanCollideenabled on solid platforms. - Choose a
MaterialandColor, then duplicate platforms to make repeated sections rather than recreating them one at a time. - Group related pieces into a model, and add a
SpawnLocationwhere players should begin. - Add a hazard and a clearly recognizable finish area. Keep the first route compact enough to test quickly.
For a first obby, make the route possible to complete before adding decorative detail. This makes it easier to notice problems with collisions, spawning and difficulty.
Add a first gameplay script
Roblox uses Luau. A regular Script generally runs on the server and is appropriate for authoritative game changes. A LocalScript runs on a player’s client and is commonly used for local input or interface behavior. A ModuleScript holds reusable code. Put code where its role belongs—for example, server game logic in ServerScriptService, player-local code in StarterPlayerScripts, or behavior directly inside the object it controls.

end)script.Parent is the Part containing the script. Its Touched event fires on contact; the script looks for a character’s Humanoid before setting health to zero, which makes the character die and respawn. This is a learning example, not a production damage system: a finished multiplayer game may need debounce logic, collision filtering and more careful treatment of non-player objects. Do not rely on copied code you do not understand.
Test and debug before publishing
- Start a session with Test or press F5. Use Test Here when you want to start near the current camera position.
- Check that the character spawns correctly, platforms hold the character, hazards work and the finish condition is reachable.
- Click Stop to return to edit mode. If a script failed, inspect the Output window for errors and check that the script is in the intended location.
- Use Studio’s device simulation to check screen sizes and form factors. Make touch targets large and readable, keep important interface elements away from screen edges, and test keyboard, touch or gamepad controls that your experience supports.
- Test with multiple clients before release. Roblox Studio’s testing services support up to eight simulated clients; the testing modes guide explains the options.
A one-player test can hide client-server problems. In multiplayer, check shared objects, rewards, respawning and any RemoteEvents or saved data. Never trust a client alone to award valuable items or control authoritative game state.
Save and publish the experience
- Stop any playtest and select File → Publish to Roblox.
- Enter an experience name and optional description, choose whether the creator is your individual account or a group, and select supported devices.
- Select Create to publish the project to Roblox.
Publishing uploads the project; it does not automatically make it public. New experiences are private by default. A local save is also not the same as publishing to Roblox. Roblox’s beginner guidance recommends publishing about every 10 minutes or after a major change; see its test and save tutorial.

If publishing is unavailable, first stop playtesting, confirm Studio is signed in and a valid place is open, then try File → Publish to Roblox again. Keep a local backup before major changes; if the issue persists, check Roblox service status.

Make the experience public
After publishing, configure availability and audience in the Creator Dashboard. Roblox’s rules distinguish between reaching users aged 16 and older and reaching younger Roblox Kids and Roblox Select audiences. Current requirements may include an account in good standing, an applicable age check and a content maturity/compliance questionnaire. Broader audience access can involve additional verification, two-step verification, a qualifying Roblox Plus or Premium subscription maintained for two consecutive months, or a one-time refundable fee. Roblox’s currently documented fee for the applicable all-ages path is 1,000 Robux per game.
These are policy-sensitive requirements checked on August 16, 2026; requirements, fee conditions and eligibility can change and may vary by audience, region and account. Check Roblox’s live publishing requirements and Kids and Select guidance before changing availability. Experiences aimed at younger audiences may also be evaluated. If the Creator Dashboard blocks public access, use its current notice to identify the missing step rather than assuming that a successful upload made the game public.

Make the game understandable and playable on supported devices
Before sharing, give the experience an accurate name and description, and add an icon and screenshots that represent the actual game. Set supported devices to match what you have tested. A desktop layout does not automatically work well on a phone: check interface scaling, readable text, orientation, touch controls, loading and respawning. Reduce unnecessary scripts, particle effects, transparent parts and high-detail meshes if performance suffers on lower-end devices.
Use Creator Store assets carefully
The Toolbox can add community-created models, meshes, images, audio, videos, fonts and plugins. These assets can save time, but third-party models may contain malicious scripts or backdoors. Roblox warns that such code can manipulate a game, steal sensitive data or disrupt players. Review Roblox’s Toolbox guide and third-party vulnerability guidance.

- Inspect an asset before adding it, then review its contents in Explorer.
- If you only need the visuals, use Toolbox’s Disable Scripts option when available.
- Remove scripts or plugins you do not understand; test unfamiliar assets in a separate private copy first.
- Use only art, music and other content you have permission to use. Uploaded assets must comply with Roblox rules and applicable copyright requirements.
Work with friends without losing control of the project
Studio collaboration supports real-time teamwork, while group ownership and roles let a team control who can edit or manage an experience. Grant only the access collaborators need, and use version history to review or revert changes. Roblox currently requires an age check to collaborate with other creators through Studio collaboration tools; Team Create used alone does not require that check. During collaboration, Studio automatically saves the project to the cloud approximately every four minutes. See the collaboration documentation.

Consider monetization only after the game works
Roblox offers optional ways to monetize an experience, including passes, developer products, private servers, subscriptions, paid access and creator rewards. A pass is generally a one-time purchase for a privilege; a developer product can be purchased repeatedly. A game does not earn money simply because it is published or gets visits.
- Roblox says creators receive 70% of Robux spent on their own experience passes. See monetize experiences.
- Developer products require the experience to be published and accessible. Create them in Creator Hub under Monetization → Developer Products; Roblox’s current documented price range is 1 to 1 billion Robux.
- For developer-product fulfillment, use
MarketplaceService.ProcessReceipt. Do not treatPromptProductPurchaseFinishedas proof that a purchase succeeded. See the developer products guide. - Purchase and product information is not automatically recorded for you. Persistent rewards need reliable server-side handling and appropriate storage, such as
DataStoreService, with error handling and testing. Do not grant purchases based only on client-side signals.
Avoid misleading prompts and pay-to-win mechanics, and review Roblox policy before adding randomized monetization. Build a worthwhile core game loop first; monetization does not guarantee earnings.
Common first-project problems
- The character falls through a platform: check that the part exists where expected and that
CanCollideis enabled. - A platform drops away: set
Anchoredtotrueif it should remain fixed. - The hazard script does nothing: confirm it is a server
Scriptinside the intended Part, that the character touches the part, and that Output shows no error. - The experience is not publicly playable: publishing only uploads it. Check the Creator Dashboard’s availability, audience and eligibility notices.
- A model behaves unexpectedly: inspect its scripts, remove unknown code and retest from a clean copy.
- It works for one player but breaks for several: test shared state and server-side validation with multiple clients.
