How to Create a Looping YouTube Live Stream With a YouTube Playlist

YouTube’s playlist Loop repeats playback, not a live broadcast. To stream prerecorded videos in a continuous YouTube Live program, configure an encoder and connect it to Live Control Room.

You can broadcast a repeating video program on YouTube Live, but YouTube’s playlist Loop control does not create a live stream. It only repeats playback for viewers. To make a live broadcast, use an encoder that sends your media to a YouTube Live event; configure and test that encoder’s looping behavior separately.

What “looping a YouTube playlist live” actually means

A YouTube playlist and a YouTube Live stream are different things. On YouTube’s computer player, Loop repeats a playlist for a viewer. A live stream instead receives a continuous feed from an encoder through a stream URL and stream key. You cannot turn a viewer-side playlist into a live broadcast just by enabling Loop in the player. See YouTube’s playlist loop instructions and its encoder setup guide.

For a repeating prerecorded program, the encoder must play the media files in sequence and repeat them, then send that output to the Live event. YouTube’s official guidance covers the YouTube-side encoder connection, but does not provide verified, version-specific instructions for setting up an OBS playlist of files to loop indefinitely. Do not assume that capturing a YouTube playlist player is the same as configuring an encoder media playlist.

Check eligibility before setting up the broadcast

  • Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  • First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the day you intend to broadcast.
  • YouTube’s live-streaming overview says creators must be at least 16; younger participants are subject to separate conditions.
  • Use only media you have the necessary rights to stream, including applicable music rights. A video’s presence in a YouTube playlist does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and applicable law.

Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and overview and terms before going live, especially if your channel or content has restrictions.

Set up a looping program and connect it to YouTube Live

  1. Prepare your source media. Gather the video files you are entitled to broadcast and decide their order and intended continuous duration. The encoder—not YouTube’s viewer playlist control—needs to produce the repeating program. Confirm that your chosen encoder and version supports the source format and looping behavior you need.
  2. Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live. Create a new stream or select an existing one in Live Control Room. Set its title, visibility (public, private, or unlisted), and schedule if needed.
  3. Copy the event’s connection details. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s server and key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not show it in a public recording or share it with viewers.
  4. Configure and test the encoder’s loop. Set up the media source or playlist in the installed encoder so that the intended files play continuously. The exact controls depend on the encoder and version; the YouTube instructions do not verify specific OBS menu names or playlist-source steps. Test past the end of the final file and check that playback returns to the first item without a gap or an unintended stop.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for YouTube to receive the feed and show an incoming preview. Check that both picture and sound are correct. If the event is scheduled, use Live Control Room’s Go live control after the preview appears.
  6. Verify and monitor the watch page. Open the channel or event watch page, preferably on another device, and confirm viewers see and hear the intended program. Keep monitoring the broadcast rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees uninterrupted delivery.
  7. End the event deliberately. Stop the broadcast using the current controls in your encoder and Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a stream lasting longer than 12 hours will be archived.

Plan the connection and stream timing

  • Leave upload headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Where a backup stream is also being sent, the connection must accommodate the primary and backup streams.
  • Start early. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use the preview time to confirm the media loop, image, and audio.
  • Check local recording and failover where relevant. YouTube’s encoder tips recommend checking local archive growth and testing failover where applicable. These are preparation steps, not a guarantee that a stream will never be interrupted.
  • Know which “playlist” you are configuring. If you choose HLS ingestion, YouTube’s rolling HLS playlist is a transport manifest, not a viewer playlist. YouTube’s HLS requirements include TS segments of 1–4 seconds and no more than five outstanding segments in the rolling playlist. Most creators looping prerecorded files through an encoder do not need HLS-specific settings.

For operational advice, see YouTube’s live-streaming tips and streaming tips. If you select HLS ingestion, use the dedicated HLS setup instructions; do not apply those manifest requirements to a normal viewer playlist.

Common problems and what to check

  • The playlist repeats for you, but there is no live broadcast. The player’s Loop control only repeats viewer playback. Create a Live event and connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and key.
  • YouTube does not receive a feed. Confirm the encoder is running and that the server URL and stream key match the selected event. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls and update the encoder.
  • The media stops instead of looping. Check the installed encoder’s source or playlist loop settings and test beyond the final item before publishing. Exact controls vary by encoder version; YouTube’s encoder guide does not document OBS playlist-source configuration.
  • The preview is missing or wrong. Check the selected media source, encoder output, and event selection. Wait for the incoming preview before starting a scheduled event publicly.
  • The stream drops or looks unstable. Check upload capacity and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, including capacity for a backup stream if you use one. Monitor the encoder and Live Control Room; bandwidth headroom is a recommendation, not a stability guarantee.
  • The stream is not archived as expected. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for longer broadcasts; plan an independent recording if retaining the full program matters.
  • Content is blocked or restricted. Confirm you have the necessary rights for every video and music track. A public YouTube upload or playlist is not evidence that you may rebroadcast its contents live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded program looping on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
