TLauncher does not create or host a Minecraft server by itself. It launches your Minecraft installation and lets you connect to multiplayer. To play with friends, choose the setup that matches your situation:
- Same Wi-Fi or wired network: use Open to LAN.
- Friends on different networks: use a virtual-LAN tool such as Hamachi, or use hosted multiplayer.
- A persistent server: run the separate official Minecraft: Java Edition server software.
- Least technical setup: use managed Minecraft hosting or Minecraft Java Realms.
The correct method depends on whether you want a quick shared world, a server that runs independently of one player’s game, or a managed service.
Option 1: Open a Minecraft world to LAN
Open to LAN is the fastest choice when everyone is connected to the same home, school, or local network. It uses the host’s existing single-player world, so it is not a 24/7 dedicated server: friends can normally play only while the host has that world open.

Set up LAN play
- Start TLauncher on the host computer.
- Launch the same Minecraft version that every participant will use.
- Open the single-player world you want to share.
- Press Esc and select Open to LAN.
- Choose the game mode and whether commands are allowed, then select Start LAN World.
- Note the port Minecraft displays. It is usually a session-specific number, so do not assume it will be the same next time.
Each other player should launch the matching Minecraft version, select Multiplayer, choose Direct Connection, and enter the host computer’s local IP address followed by the port. A typical local address looks like 192.168.x.x, but the actual address depends on the network.
Use the format:
HOST_LOCAL_IP:PORT
For example, if the host’s local IP is 192.168.1.25 and Minecraft displays port 54321, the other player would try:
192.168.1.25:54321
Do not use the host’s public Internet IP for ordinary LAN play. If the computers are close enough, a Cat6 Ethernet cable can provide a wired LAN connection, although Wi-Fi works too. A cable is optional and does not replace a dedicated server, Internet hosting, or router configuration.
Find the host’s local IP address
On Windows, open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
Look for the IPv4 Address under the network adapter currently in use. On macOS or Linux, the address can be found in the active network settings or with the system’s network-status command. Use the private address assigned to the host by the same router or access point.

If friends are not physically connected to the same network, TLauncher’s documented Hamachi method creates a virtual network that can make the computers behave more like local-network devices. This is one option, not a guarantee that every network or security product will work without adjustment.
- Install Hamachi on each participating computer.
- Have each player sign in.
- One player creates a Hamachi network and gives the network name and password to the others.
- Each friend joins that network.
- The host launches the matching Minecraft version, opens the world, presses Esc, and selects Open to LAN.
- The host shares the port shown by Minecraft.
- Friends choose Multiplayer and Direct Connection, then enter the host’s Hamachi IP followed by the Minecraft LAN port.
For example:
HAMACHI_IP:PORT
Hamachi does not turn TLauncher into a server host. The host still has to keep the world open, and firewall or antivirus software may block either Hamachi or Minecraft. If this approach becomes unreliable, managed hosting or a separate dedicated server is usually a better long-term solution.

Option 3: Run a separate dedicated Java server
A dedicated server is independent of a single-player world opened through the game client. It can remain available while the server process is running, making it more suitable for a persistent private world. It does, however, require Java, server configuration, security decisions, and usually more network administration.
Install the official Minecraft server software
- Confirm the Java requirement for the Minecraft version you intend to run. Java requirements vary by game version and server distribution.
- Download the server JAR from the official Minecraft: Java Edition server download page. Do not rely on a random re-upload.
- Create a dedicated folder, such as
Minecraft Server. - Place the downloaded JAR in that folder. The filename can change with Minecraft releases, so use the actual filename you downloaded.
- Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal, or a terminal window in that folder.
- Start the server with a command like this, replacing
server.jarwith the real filename:
java -jar server.jar nogui
If Java is installed correctly and the command points to the right file, the first run should generate server files and then stop or report that the EULA must be accepted.
Recommended Free Tools
- Stop the process if it is still running.
- Open the generated
eula.txtfile. - Read the current Minecraft EULA and related usage terms. Change the required acceptance value only if you agree to the terms.
- Start the server again with the same Java command.
- Adjust settings in
server.propertiesonly after the server has generated it. Back up the world before making major changes.
Do not hard-code a Minecraft version or Java version into a general setup guide: both the official server download and version-specific Java requirements change. Verify the target release immediately before installing.
Connect to the dedicated server
On the same computer as the server, test the connection with:
localhost
Other players on the same local network generally use the host computer’s private IP and the server port. Players connecting over the Internet need the appropriate public address or hostname and may also require router and firewall configuration.

For the client-side process, open Minecraft’s Java multiplayer screen and choose one of these options:
- Direct Connection: enter the server address for a one-time connection.
- Add Server: save the address in the server list.
- An existing server entry: select it and choose Join Server.
Addresses may be IP addresses or URLs. The correct value depends on whether the server is local, virtual-LAN based, self-hosted on the Internet, or provided by a hosting company. Minecraft’s official multiplayer guidance covers Direct Connection and adding Java servers.
Version, Java, and mod compatibility
Most connection failures that look like networking problems are actually compatibility problems. Before troubleshooting the router or firewall, check the following:
- The client and server use compatible Minecraft versions.
- Every player launches the same version for LAN play.
- For modded play, every player has the same mods and compatible mod versions.
- Everyone uses the same mod loader family and matching Forge or other loader version where applicable.
- The server’s Java runtime meets the requirements of the selected Minecraft version.
TLauncher publishes Java guidance for different Minecraft releases, but those mappings can change. Check the launcher’s current Java guidance and the requirements for the particular server software before downloading or selecting a runtime. A newer Java installation is not automatically compatible with every older Minecraft release, and a server may have requirements different from the client.
Authentication and “Invalid session” errors
Errors such as Invalid session or Failed to verify user name can occur when a separately hosted server, Aternos, or another hosting service checks account authentication and the account or client setup does not satisfy that check.

Treat this as an account and server-configuration issue, not as proof that the IP address is wrong. Confirm the following:
- The server and client versions are compatible.
- The player is signed in with the account expected by the server.
- The server host’s authentication requirements match the accounts being used.
- The hosting provider permits the intended account and client configuration.
Do not casually disable authentication or change online-mode as a universal fix. That setting affects identity verification, access control, security, and policy compliance, particularly on a public server. Review the current official terms and use legitimately obtained Minecraft software and accounts. If a hosting service requires a particular authentication setup, follow its current documentation rather than copying an unverified configuration from a forum.
Firewall and connection troubleshooting
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the address: use the host’s current local IP for LAN, the Hamachi IP for a virtual LAN, or the hosting provider’s exact address for hosted play.
- Confirm the port: an Open to LAN port is generated for that session; a dedicated server uses its configured server port.
- Match versions: compare the exact Minecraft version, loader, and mods on every machine.
- Check that the host is actually running: an Open to LAN world must remain open, while a dedicated server must still be running in its terminal window.
- Check network isolation: guest Wi-Fi and some school, workplace, or public networks prevent devices from communicating with one another.
- Check security software: the operating-system firewall or antivirus may block Java, Minecraft, Hamachi, or the server process. Allow the correct application on the appropriate network profile rather than turning protection off permanently.
- Test locally: if
localhostworks on the server computer but another player cannot connect, the problem is more likely the local network, firewall, router, or address.
Internet-accessible self-hosting can require router port forwarding and firewall rules. There is no safe universal recipe because router interfaces, ISP policies, double-NAT setups, and network topologies differ. Minecraft warns that home-network server configuration involves changing network settings and should not be attempted without understanding the risks. If you do not want to expose or maintain a home network, use managed Minecraft server hosting or Realms instead.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Self-hosted server vs. managed hosting vs. Realms
| Choice | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Open to LAN | Friends on the same network who want to play immediately | The host must keep the world open; it is not persistent hosting |
| Virtual LAN | Remote friends who want to share a host’s world without traditional port forwarding | Additional software, accounts, and possible firewall issues |
| Self-hosted Java server | Players who want control over files, settings, worlds, and mods | You manage Java, backups, security, updates, and Internet access |
| Managed Minecraft server | Players who want to avoid keeping a home PC online or configuring a router | Costs and features vary; check authentication, version, mod support, backups, uptime, and location before subscribing |
| Minecraft Java Realms | Eligible licensed Java Edition players who want an official managed multiplayer option | It is a separate paid Minecraft service with its own account and availability requirements |
Hosting providers and Realms are external alternatives, not TLauncher features. Before choosing Minecraft Java Realms, check the current subscription terms, supported account type, player limits, and feature availability in your region. For third-party hosting, compare the exact Minecraft version, mod-loader support, authentication policy, backups, geographic performance, pricing, and cancellation terms.
Which method should you use?
- Choose Open to LAN if everyone is on the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network and the host will be playing too.
- Choose a virtual LAN if the players are remote but you specifically want to share the host’s existing world.
- Choose a dedicated server if you want the world to run separately from a player’s single-player session and are comfortable administering it.
- Choose managed hosting if you want server files and networking handled by a provider.
- Choose Realms if you use supported licensed Java Edition accounts and prefer Minecraft’s official managed multiplayer route.
In every case, TLauncher is the launcher and client-side connection layer. The actual multiplayer environment comes from LAN sharing, a virtual network, Minecraft’s separate server software, a hosting provider, or Realms.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does TLauncher create a Minecraft server?
No. TLauncher launches Minecraft and helps you select a game installation, but it does not independently provide official dedicated-server hosting. Multiplayer comes from LAN sharing, a virtual-LAN tool, Minecraft’s Java server software, third-party hosting, or Realms.
How do I play with friends on the same Wi-Fi in TLauncher?
Use Open to LAN. Launch the same Minecraft version, open the world, press Esc, choose Open to LAN, and share the displayed port. Friends on the same network connect through Multiplayer > Direct Connection using the host’s local IP and that port.
What is the difference between LAN and a dedicated server?
A dedicated server runs separately from the host’s single-player session and can remain available while its server process is running. Open to LAN shares the host’s currently open world and normally ends when that session closes.
Why can’t my friends connect to my TLauncher server?
Check the exact client and server versions, mod loader, mods, Java requirements, address, and port first. Then check firewall or antivirus permissions and whether the network blocks device-to-device communication. An Invalid session error usually concerns authentication or account compatibility rather than the network address.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: You cannot create a dedicated server inside TLauncher itself. Use Open to LAN for same-network play, a documented virtual-LAN method for remote friends sharing a host world, the official Java server software for self-hosting, or managed hosting and Realms for a simpler persistent setup.
