First decide whether you need words on screen during the broadcast or a transcript you can read later. Live captions help viewers follow a stream as it happens; a saved transcript is a separate asset, and the platform must support a way to retain or add it. On YouTube, configure a caption feed before going live, or add and edit captions in YouTube Studio after the recording is available.
Choose between live captions and a saved transcript
Live captions appear during the broadcast. They may be generated by a captioning workflow or sent to the platform by an encoder or supported caption software. A transcript is text retained for later reading, searching, editing, or captioning. Do not assume a live caption feed is automatically saved as a transcript: retention and download options depend on the platform and its settings.
- Viewers need text during the stream: arrange and test the platform’s live-caption workflow before the broadcast.
- You need text after the stream: use the platform’s recording or transcript tools, then proofread and publish the resulting text or caption track.
- You need both: plan for live delivery and post-stream retention separately; a live feed does not guarantee a downloadable transcript.
When choosing a method, check whether the platform accepts embedded captions, an external caption feed, or text added after the event; whether it retains a transcript and who can access it; and whether the language, audio, vocabulary, and timing suit automatic recognition or require a human captioner.
Create live captions for a YouTube stream
YouTube’s live caption requirements describe two approaches: captions embedded in the video as 608/708 captions, or captions sent using supported software over HTTP. These steps concern captions viewers can see during the stream; they do not by themselves establish that you will have a retained transcript afterward. See YouTube’s live caption requirements before production, since software requirements can change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Send embedded 608/708 captions
- Create or open the stream in YouTube’s live setup.
- Open Settings, then Setup, and turn on Closed captions.
- Choose Embedded 608/708 and save the setting.
- Configure the encoder to send EIA 608/CEA 708 captions with the video, then test the output before the event.
The 608/708 standard allows up to four language tracks, but YouTube’s cited guidance says it currently supports one caption track. Do not plan a multi-language live caption setup on the assumption that all four tracks will be accepted.
Send captions through supported software
- Enable captions in the event setup and copy the signed HTTP caption ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to the captioner or captioning operator using YouTube-supported software.
- Test the feed and timing before the event. YouTube advises adding a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for events.
YouTube’s help page lists Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net, with version requirements for some products. Check current compatibility with the provider before relying on a particular version. Each stream entry point accepts one caption feed, so account for that limit when designing the production.

Add or refine a transcript after a YouTube stream
Once the stream recording is available, you can add captions in YouTube Studio. A caption track can also make the spoken content easier to follow while watching the recording. YouTube offers three routes: upload a timed caption file, auto-sync transcript text, or type captions manually. Full instructions are in YouTube’s subtitles and captions guide.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Subtitles.
- Choose the video and the language for the captions.
- Select the workflow that matches your material:
- Upload file: use a caption file containing spoken text and timing. Some formats also include position and style information.
- Auto-sync: paste or enter a transcript in the same language as the speech and let YouTube align it to the video.
- Type manually: enter captions directly in Studio.
- Review the resulting track against the recording, correct errors, and publish it when ready.
YouTube cautions that auto-sync is not recommended for videos longer than one hour or for poor-quality audio. If automatic captions are available, YouTube says they are published in the video’s default language; check the actual video and track rather than assuming a particular language or transcript is available.

Proofread before publishing
Automatic speech recognition is a draft, not a guaranteed verbatim transcript. Listen for errors in names, game titles, specialist terms, numbers, fast speech, and speakers talking over one another. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal accuracy percentage, so do not treat a generated transcript as verified without checking it against the audio.

Twitch: provide captions through the broadcast setup
Twitch’s Guide to Closed Captions describes caption files embedded in streams or supplied through broadcast encoders, and an OBS closed-caption plugin workflow. Twitch’s professional live-captioning service is described for Twitch-produced content; it should not be mistaken for a service automatically available on every user’s stream.

A third-party OBS Forums resource, last updated July 17, 2019, describes a “Closed Captioning via Google Speech Recognition” plugin that uses Twitch’s built-in caption support and can save captions as SRT subtitle files. The resource warns that recognition quality varies by speaker and subject, and may decline with specialized vocabulary or hectic speech; it also specifies language and encoder limitations. Because that information is from a community resource rather than current official platform documentation, check whether the plugin works with your current OBS and Twitch versions before building a workflow around it: OBS Forums plugin resource.
Zoom: enable transcript retention separately
Zoom’s FAQ for its May 2026 update distinguishes live captions from retained meeting transcripts: under the described workflow, participants cannot save or download live captions after the meeting. A host or administrator must enable meeting transcripts to retain speech-to-text data, and account settings control transcript generation, access, and download permissions. See Zoom’s FAQ about its May 2026 caption and transcript updates and check the account’s current settings before the meeting.

Troubleshoot missing or inaccurate text
| What you see | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No YouTube captions during the live stream | Captions were not enabled for the event, the encoder is not sending embedded captions, or the external feed is not connected. | Confirm the event’s caption setting and selected input method; verify the encoder or caption software is sending the configured feed. |
| External YouTube captions do not arrive | The captioner may not have the current signed ingestion URL, or the feed may be attached to the wrong stream entry point. | Recheck the event’s URL and entry point, and confirm the captioning software supports the required workflow. |
| The wrong language or no transcript appears after a YouTube stream | The recording may not have an appropriate caption track, or automatic captions may be published in the video’s default language. | In Studio, inspect the video’s language and subtitle tracks; add the intended language using upload, auto-sync, or manual entry. |
| YouTube auto-sync misaligns or performs poorly | Audio quality or duration may not suit auto-sync; YouTube advises against it for videos over an hour or with poor audio. | Use a timed caption file or manual editing, then compare timing and words with the recording. |
| Recognized game terminology or names are wrong | Speech recognition can struggle with specialized vocabulary, fast delivery, and overlapping speech. | Proofread against the audio and correct the transcript or caption track; do not publish unreviewed text as verified. |
| Zoom participants cannot download the live captions | Live captions and retained meeting transcripts are separate under Zoom’s May 2026 guidance. | Have the host or administrator enable meeting transcripts and set appropriate access permissions before the meeting. |
