How to Create a YouTube 24/7 Stream with FFmpeg on Ubuntu in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can create a YouTube 24/7 stream on Ubuntu by looping media through FFmpeg and sending it to YouTube Live over RTMPS. First confirm your channel can livestream, then choose an always-on Ubuntu computer or VPS, configure FFmpeg for a bitrate your connection can sustain, and use systemd to restart the process if it exits. A restart policy is not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming: host, network, media, and YouTube issues still need monitoring.

1. Check that your channel can go live

Before preparing the Ubuntu host, confirm the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. YouTube also requires livestreams to comply with its policies. See YouTube’s live-streaming help for eligibility and current requirements.

In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream you intend to use. Its stream settings provide the ingest endpoint and stream key. You will need both when configuring FFmpeg. Keep the key private: treat it like a password, and do not put it in a public repository, tutorial screenshot, or command that may be saved in shell history.

2. Choose an Ubuntu host that can stay online

The machine running FFmpeg must remain powered on and connected for the stream to continue. You can use an existing Ubuntu computer if you can keep it online, or an always-on Ubuntu VPS if you do not want a computer at home running continuously. A VPS still requires you to manage FFmpeg and monitor the stream.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

There is no established India-specific VPS ranking or provider recommendation here. Do not assume a local server will necessarily perform better: measure sustained upload from the actual host and choose settings that remain stable on that connection. Compare options by availability, control, upload consistency, process recovery, cost, and maintenance rather than location alone.

3. Confirm FFmpeg and inspect your media

Install or confirm an FFmpeg build on the Ubuntu host that supports the input files and output codecs you plan to use. Check the installed version and its available options against the FFmpeg documentation; documentation tracks current revisions, and the Ubuntu package version depends on the release and installation source. No single command is suitable for every combination of container, codecs, audio and video durations, and FFmpeg build.

Before building a loop, inspect the source files: note their video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether audio is present for the full duration. Mismatched track lengths or unsupported codecs can cause a loop to stop, produce silence, or fail during encoding. Test the actual media rather than assuming an example command will fit it.

4. Set encoder values for YouTube and your connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its recommended bitrates vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the matching row in the YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table instead of applying one bitrate to every stream.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Choose a stable output that your host and upload connection can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate require more upload capacity.
  • Video and audio codecs: Use a supported video codec and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm your FFmpeg build can encode the selected formats.
  • Bitrate mode: Use CBR and select the bitrate recommended for your exact output combination on YouTube’s live guidance page.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where supported; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Ingest protocol: Prefer RTMPS. YouTube describes it as a secure extension to RTMP.

YouTube recommends choosing a quality reliable on the available internet connection. A speed test is a useful starting point, but sustained upload from the actual host is more relevant than a brief peak. Reduce resolution or bitrate if the connection cannot hold the chosen output without instability.

5. Configure FFmpeg to loop and send the stream

Configure FFmpeg to read your media continuously and send the resulting audio/video stream to the RTMPS endpoint and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The exact input-looping and encoding options depend on the file and installed FFmpeg build, so verify the relevant flags in the version’s documentation and test with your real files.

Do not hard-code a real stream key into a public script or repository. Restrict access to any private configuration that contains it, and avoid putting the key directly in a command you may later publish or expose through saved shell history. If the key is disclosed, replace it in YouTube Studio before resuming the stream.

YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”

6. Use systemd to recover from an FFmpeg exit

For a process intended to run continuously, systemd can start FFmpeg as a service and restart it if the process exits. A public GitHub systemd/VPS example uses Restart=always; treat that as an implementation pattern, not a universal unit file to copy without review. Adapt the service to your paths, account permissions, private key handling, and installed FFmpeg version.

A restart policy addresses process exit, not every failure. It cannot restore a failed host, repair invalid media or credentials, resolve an account restriction, or fix an internet outage. Check the service status and logs with systemd’s tools, and compare them with YouTube Studio’s stream-health feedback. Ensure the service runs with only the permissions it needs and that its configuration does not expose the stream key.

7. Test the complete stream before relying on it

  1. Start the service or run the configured FFmpeg process and check that YouTube Studio receives the stream.
  2. Test with audio and movement similar to the content you intend to broadcast; a silent file or still image may not reveal problems in the final program.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and the Ubuntu service logs. Correct encoder, connection, or media errors before treating the stream as ready.
  4. Observe the process and connection long enough to check for recurring exits, interrupted upload, or audio/video ending at different times.

YouTube’s instruction is simple: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The YouTube Live API documentation is also relevant if you are automating stream setup, but it does not replace YouTube Studio’s stream-health checks.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check the ingest endpoint and stream key copied from the selected Studio stream, confirm RTMPS configuration, then inspect FFmpeg and service logs for connection errors.
  • The stream repeatedly disconnects: Check sustained upload from the host and lower the output resolution or bitrate if needed. A systemd restart may relaunch FFmpeg, but it does not repair an unstable connection.
  • Video or audio fails after a loop: Inspect source codecs and track durations, then verify the loop and encoding options for your FFmpeg version. Test the complete sequence using the real media.
  • The process stops after an error: Check service status and logs, and verify the systemd restart configuration. A restart loop will not fix a persistent media, credential, or configuration error.
  • YouTube reports stream-health issues: Match the selected codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then run another end-to-end test.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not operate an Ubuntu host and FFmpeg service yourself, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day.
