How to Create a YouTube Sermon Playlist from Files on a Church NAS

Use OBS’s VLC Video source to play sermon recordings from a mounted church NAS share, then connect OBS to YouTube Live and verify the preview before the service.

To stream sermon recordings stored on a church NAS, use a computer that can access the NAS share, add the files in order to an OBS Studio VLC Video source, and send OBS’s output to a stream created or scheduled in YouTube Studio. Test the complete playlist and YouTube preview before the service; YouTube Live does not turn a NAS folder into a playlist by itself.

Before you begin

  • A computer with OBS Studio that can stay on and reach the church NAS and the internet for the entire stream.
  • The sermon recordings you intend to broadcast, in formats the installed playback software can read.
  • VLC installed alongside OBS. OBS says its VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; use matching architectures, such as 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS Project: Media Sources
  • Access to the church’s YouTube channel and Live Control Room. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Make sure the church has the rights needed to broadcast the recordings and any music, slides, or other material in them. The technical setup cannot establish those rights.

Set up the NAS files for the streaming computer

Connect the computer to the church network and use the operating system’s normal method to mount or map the NAS share. Sign in with the appropriate credentials, then confirm the computer can open and play the files from that share. Add files using the accessible mounted or mapped path.

The exact steps depend on the NAS vendor, its firmware, and the computer’s operating system. Do not make a private NAS share publicly accessible just to let OBS reach the files. Keep the computer connected to the share throughout playback; test access using the same account and network connection you will use during the service.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build the playlist in OBS

  1. Choose or create a scene. In OBS, select the scene that will show the sermon recordings. Sources are added to scenes, so make sure you are editing the scene intended for the stream. See the OBS Project Sources Guide.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. If it is not available, install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS, then reopen OBS. OBS Project: Media Sources
  3. Add the sermon files. In the source properties, add the recordings from the NAS path in the order they should play. A VLC Video source supports multiple media items; OBS’s basic Media Source is intended for an individual media file. Use the playlist source when sequential playback of several files is required.
  4. Set playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for a fixed service order. Choose whether the playlist should loop based on the event: enable looping only if you want playback to restart after the final item. Confirm the files appear in the intended order.
  5. Check the scene output. Confirm the video is visible and that the expected audio source is present. Play the playlist from the beginning and test the actual files—supported formats and playback depend on the installed software and codecs.

OBS lists its media-source and VLC playlist capabilities in its Media Sources documentation. A NAS folder is not automatically imported as a YouTube playlist: OBS is the part assembling and playing the sequence.

Create or schedule the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, description, and privacy as appropriate for the service. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers creating or scheduling the event and configuring its settings. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  3. Locate the stream URL and stream key in the stream’s settings. The key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed; treat it like a password. YouTube describes stream-key and URL management in Manage live stream settings.

If live streaming is not yet enabled on the channel, allow for YouTube’s stated first-time activation period of up to 24 hours before the service. That timing is YouTube’s guidance, not a guarantee that every channel will be enabled sooner.

Connect OBS and test before the service

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the stream URL and key provided in Live Control Room, using the connection method available in your OBS version.
  2. Start streaming from OBS early enough to check the feed. In YouTube Live Control Room, verify that the preview appears and that the event is receiving video and audio.
  3. Play through the playlist on the actual streaming computer. Check the opening, transitions between files, order, sound, picture, and whether playback stops or loops as intended.
  4. Test the church’s internet connection under the expected stream settings and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing the network and checking stream health rather than assuming a particular connection type will work in every setup. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
  5. For a scheduled event, use Go live in Live Control Room once the preview is ready. Follow Studio’s workflow for ending the event and stopping the encoder.

A wired connection can be worth considering if it fits the church’s layout and improves reliability, but it is not a universal requirement. The useful test is whether the actual network path sustains the chosen stream and produces healthy status in Live Control Room.

Protect the stream key and the recordings

Do not share the stream key in public documents, messages, screenshots, or recordings. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance explains key management.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
VLC Video Source is missing from OBS VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC matching the OBS architecture, then reopen OBS. See OBS Media Sources.
A playlist item will not play The streaming computer cannot reach the NAS path, or the file’s format or codec is unsupported by the installed software. Check the mounted share and permissions using the streaming computer’s account. Open the file locally from that path and test the actual recording in OBS before the event.
The playlist is out of order or starts over unexpectedly Items were added in the wrong order, shuffle is enabled, or looping is configured differently than intended. Review the VLC Video source’s item order and playback options, then test from the beginning through the last item.
YouTube preview does not appear OBS may not be sending to the correct stream URL or key, or the connection may not be reaching YouTube. Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current values in Live Control Room, verify the key, then restart the encoder and check the preview and stream health.
YouTube rejects the stream after a key was shared The key may have been exposed or reset. Reset the key in Live Control Room and replace the saved value in OBS. Do not reuse a key that has been exposed.
The stream is unstable or loses health The network path may not reliably support the chosen settings. Test upload capacity and stream health before the event; inspect the computer-to-router path and consider Ethernet if practical. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips.
Live streaming is unavailable on the channel Live streaming may not have been enabled yet. Check channel eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio; YouTube says initial enablement can take up to 24 hours.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded YouTube stream that should keep running without a church computer left on, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
