To livestream pre-recorded chess games on YouTube 24/7, play a playlist of recordings through a streaming encoder such as OBS and send that encoder output to a YouTube Live event. YouTube does not automatically turn ordinary uploads into a continuous live broadcast, so the encoder, computer and internet connection must stay available—or you can use a cloud service that handles playlist playback.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also states that the person livestreaming must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Chess-game recordings and any board visuals, commentary, music or overlays you plan to include.
- A playlist of the files and an encoder. OBS is open-source software; its Help Portal links to streaming setup and encoding guides and recommends starting with the Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- For a local setup, a computer and internet connection that can remain on for the duration of the stream.
YouTube identifies encoder-based streaming as a method for gaming and other video-intensive content. Its official guidance does not describe a one-click feature for looping uploaded videos as a live event.
Prepare the chess videos and playlist
Check rights before scheduling
Confirm you have the rights to rebroadcast each recording and every component in it, including event footage, commentary, board graphics, music and overlays. Do not assume that chess moves or a recording of a game are automatically free to rebroadcast. Rights can depend on the material and jurisdiction, so verify your permissions for the specific files you will use.
Make a continuous playlist
Arrange the recordings in the order you want them to play, and make sure the files contain the visuals and audio you expect viewers to see. A playlist can mix full games, analysis and commentary when you have rights to all of them. Decide whether the sequence should repeat and check the transition between the last item and the first; the encoder or playlist tool, rather than YouTube, is responsible for playback continuity.

Set up the local OBS-to-YouTube stream
- Enable live streaming and create the event. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live, then configure the live event and its title, visibility and other details. Complete channel verification and address any live restrictions before relying on the stream.
- Get the event’s stream key. In the Live Control Room, use the event’s stream settings to copy its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure OBS. Open OBS and use Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point. In OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube if available and connect your account, or enter the server and stream key provided by YouTube. Labels can vary by OBS version. Add a media source or playlist playback method for your recordings, and confirm that the intended chess video and audio appear in the OBS preview.
- Run a test before committing to a long broadcast. Start the encoder early, check the Live Control Room preview, and verify that the picture and sound are correct. Check from a phone as well as the computer you are using to operate the stream.
- Start the YouTube event. Once the encoder feed appears in the Live Control Room and the preview is sound, start the event in YouTube Studio. Confirm that the public or unlisted player opens as intended.
- Keep the whole local chain running. Leave OBS, the playlist playback, the computer and the network connection operating. If the computer sleeps, OBS closes, the connection fails or playback reaches the end without looping, the live feed can stop or freeze.
- End the event deliberately. When you mean to finish the broadcast, stop the event in YouTube Studio and then stop the encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend configuring in advance, starting the encoder early, inspecting the preview, checking archive growth and accessibility, testing mobile viewing, monitoring audio and video, and stopping the encoder after the event ends.
For a channel intended to run continuously, arrange a person or alerting process to check the encoder, connection, player, sound and stream health. The YouTube Live Streaming API exposes stream health status that can help with diagnosis: LiveStreams API documentation. These checks reduce the chance of an unnoticed problem; they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
Choose local or cloud playback
A local OBS setup gives you direct control over playback, but it depends on a powered computer and a working local connection. A dedicated streaming PC is optional, not a prerequisite: test the computer you already own before buying hardware. The available guidance does not establish a minimum CPU, GPU, memory or bandwidth for this particular workload. A capture card is not needed just to play video files; it is relevant only if you are bringing in a separate physical video source.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Check that the channel is verified and eligible, then confirm OBS is using the correct event’s stream key and server settings. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- The Live Control Room preview is blank: Check that OBS is running, the correct media source is active, and the playlist is not paused or between items. Verify that the encoder is connected to the intended event.
- The broadcast stops unexpectedly: Check whether the computer slept or restarted, OBS closed, the internet connection dropped, or the playlist ended without repeating. Restore the failed part of the chain, then inspect YouTube’s stream health information.
- Video plays but there is no sound: Check the recording’s audio, the selected OBS source and its mute state, and the audio meters before restarting the event. Test the public or unlisted player on a second device.
- Quality fluctuates or playback stutters: Check the local network and the computer’s ability to play and encode the files at the same time. Test a representative recording before scheduling a long run; no specific hardware threshold is established for this use case.
- The recording or event is blocked or challenged: Review the rights and permissions for the recording and all included elements. A claim or restriction may require resolving the relevant rights issue; changing the encoder does not grant permission to rebroadcast.
