Engaging live-stream graphics make useful information easy to see without hiding the game or action. Start with a canvas that matches your stream, choose only a few elements viewers need, and preview the design in the actual broadcast scene before going live. For conventional widescreen streaming, OBS recommends a 16:9 canvas such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720.
Plan what viewers need to see
Give each graphic a job. Useful examples include identifying the streamer, showing the current topic or score, displaying a sponsor mark, or filling a starting-soon or break scene. Keep decorative frames and animation secondary to the game or other main content; an overlay is most useful when it clarifies the stream rather than competing with it.
- Choose the essential information before adding visual decoration.
- Keep labels, social details, and frames away from important on-screen action.
- Use strong text-to-background contrast so information remains legible.
Set the canvas to match the stream
Design for the output canvas or target scene dimensions, rather than stretching a graphic made for a different shape. OBS Project recommends producing conventional widescreen content at 16:9, such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. OBS warns that stretching content to fit can distort it. See the OBS Aspect Ratio Guide.
If the destination or viewing context has particular display behavior or safe areas, check its current creator documentation; requirements can differ by platform and device. The canvas examples above are OBS guidance for conventional widescreen production, not a universal platform specification.

Choose how to build and add the graphics

Build, layer, and preview the overlay
- Choose a target scene and dimensions. Use the canvas dimensions your broadcast will use; for conventional widescreen production, OBS’s examples are 1920×1080 or 1280×720 at 16:9.
- Create the graphic in the right workflow. Add static artwork and labels as OBS image and text sources. For a webpage-based layout, add a Browser Source and set its viewport to the intended canvas dimensions.
- Layer elements deliberately. Put overlay sources above the video sources they annotate. Keep the game or primary picture visible, and use separate sources for elements you want to reposition or edit independently.
- Preserve transparency where needed. If the overlay should reveal video underneath, export it with transparency. Elgato’s guide gives PNG as an example for static transparent overlays and WEBM for animated overlays; confirm the chosen broadcast software supports the format and test the exported file. - Check the actual scene at stream size. Look for stretching, cropping, unexpected opaque backgrounds, unreadable contrast, and graphics covering important action. Preview each scene and any animation behavior before going live.
Make graphics work at different display sizes
Keep the layout understandable as the player or browser changes size. Twitch’s extension-design guidance recommends considering resizing when designing layouts. That guidance concerns extensions, so it is a useful design consideration rather than a complete set of overlay requirements for every streaming destination. See Twitch’s extension design guidance.
Because platform- and device-specific safe areas and display behavior vary, verify your finished layout in the destination and viewing contexts that matter to your audience. Do not assume a single overlay position will suit every player size.

Common overlay problems and fixes
- The graphic looks stretched. Its aspect ratio or dimensions do not match the scene. Design at the target canvas size instead of forcing a mismatched asset to fit.
- Video underneath is hidden. The graphic may have an opaque background or transparency may not have been preserved. Re-export with transparency in a supported format and check it in the scene.
- Text is hard to read. Improve contrast, simplify the wording, or move the text onto a less busy part of the scene.
- The overlay blocks important action. Reposition or reduce decorative elements and check the scene during representative gameplay, not only on an empty background.
- A Browser Source does not look as intended. Check that its page or local file loads correctly and that its viewport dimensions match the intended layout.
- The design is clipped at a different player size. Recheck the layout at resized dimensions and keep essential details away from edges where they could be obscured.
