Create your overlay in Canva, export it as a transparent PNG for a static design or an MP4 for an animated one, then add it to a scene in broadcasting software such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs. Canva recommends a 1920 × 1080 px canvas for Twitch overlays; that is Canva’s recommendation, not a Twitch requirement.
1. Choose a template or start with a blank design
In Canva, search for a Twitch overlay and choose a template that fits your stream, or start with a blank overlay design. Canva’s template catalog includes gameplay, webcam, and intermission styles. Treat a template as a starting point: adapt its colors, typography, and layout to your channel, or build the design from scratch. Canva’s overlay-maker guidance and template catalog describe these options.
2. Set the canvas and plan the layout
Canva recommends a 1920 × 1080 px canvas for Twitch overlays. Use it as a design recommendation from Canva, rather than a platform rule established by Twitch documentation. Before adding graphics, decide what the overlay needs to communicate and where it can sit without obscuring important gameplay or video.
- Consider channel branding, such as colors and typography.
- Add only useful optional elements: for example, a webcam frame, social handles, a chat window, recent donors, or a subscriber goal.
- Keep text readable at the size viewers are likely to see it, and leave the main action visible.
- Compare gameplay, webcam, or intermission layouts by how much of the screen they cover and whether their information suits that kind of stream.
3. Customize the overlay
Use Canva’s frames, text, images, icons, shapes, illustrations, and other graphics to customize the selected template or compose a new design. Keep the visual hierarchy simple: the stream content should remain primary, while labels and branding should be easy to find without competing for attention.

Animation is optional. Canva describes animation for text and graphics; use it only when movement helps the design rather than distracting from the stream. Canva recommends MP4 for animated overlays.
4. Export in the right format
- Static overlay: export as a transparent PNG so the areas without design remain see-through over the stream.
- Animated overlay: export as an MP4, following Canva’s guidance for animated overlays.
Canva’s guidance says to import the exported file into preferred live-streaming software. Check the result in the scene before going live: confirm that the overlay is positioned correctly, its text is legible, and it does not cover important content. Canva names OBS Studio and Streamlabs as examples of software for this handoff.

5. Add the file to a broadcasting scene
At a high level, create or open a scene in your broadcasting software, add the exported overlay as a source, and arrange it to suit the layout. Canva describes this handoff without establishing software-version-specific menus, so the exact labels and steps may differ between OBS Studio and Streamlabs versions. Consult the current documentation for your software if you need precise menu instructions.
