Use FFmpeg’s xfade filter to blend video clips and acrossfade to smooth the audio between them. Before joining clips, normalize their video to matching frame rates, resolutions, pixel formats, and timebases. Then map and encode the filtergraph outputs, send the result to YouTube over RTMPS, and test the joins before relying on the stream.
What you need to crossfade clips
A crossfade overlaps the end of one clip with the beginning of the next. In FFmpeg, the video and audio handoffs use separate filters:
xfadeblends the video frames.acrossfadeblends the audio samples.
Using only one filter can leave a mismatched handoff—for example, smoothly blended video with an abrupt audio cut. Check every source clip’s duration, streams, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and timebase before building the filtergraph. FFmpeg’s filters documentation describes the available transition effects and audio crossfade options.
Normalize video inputs before using xfade
The two video inputs to xfade must be constant-frame-rate and match in resolution, pixel format, frame rate, and timebase. If source files differ, add normalization filters to each video branch before the transition. Choose output properties deliberately for the intended stream rather than assuming the inputs already agree.

A filtergraph for two clips has this general shape:
[0:v]...normalization...[v0];[1:v]...normalization...[v1];[v0][v1]xfade=transition=fade:duration=D:offset=O[v];[0:a]...[a0];[1:a]...[a1];[a0][a1]acrossfade=d=D[a]Here, D is the overlap duration, and O is the point on the first clip’s timeline where the video transition begins. The ellipses stand for filters and settings you must choose for your media; this is a design template, not a copy-and-run command.

Calculate offsets for the actual playlist
Each transition consumes time from the combined output because the clips overlap. For a chain of clips, connect the previous xfade output to the next one, and calculate each new offset from the timeline after earlier overlaps—not by repeating one fixed offset. Apply the equivalent sequencing to the audio chain with acrossfade.
Measure the actual clip durations and decide how long each overlap should be. A short transition gives a quicker handoff; a longer one creates a more gradual blend but overlaps more of both clips. Watch representative joins for early cuts, black frames, freezes, or timing drift. The correct offset values depend on the playlist and transition durations.

Handle audio and source differences
Inspect whether each clip has audio and whether the audio streams have compatible layouts. Decide how to handle silent clips, differing layouts, or intentional gaps before creating the audio chain; there is no single treatment that fits every playlist. Where both clips have audio and should blend, use acrossfade with a duration suited to the video overlap and select an appropriate curve from FFmpeg’s filter options.
Check the result with sound as well as motion: a visually smooth transition can still have a sudden volume change or unwanted overlap in the soundtrack.

Map and encode the filtergraph output
Label the final video and audio pads, then explicitly map them in the output command. A complex filtergraph’s labeled outputs are not a substitute for explicit mapping. Since filtering requires decoded frames, filtered streams must be encoded; -c copy cannot copy the filtered output as-is. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation for mapping and stream-selection behavior.
Choose an encoder supported by your local FFmpeg build and set the output frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec intentionally. The appropriate bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use YouTube’s guidance for the exact combination rather than a universal number.

Configure the YouTube live output
Get the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and send the encoded output to the RTMPS ingest URL. Keep the stream key private. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection in its protocol documentation.
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select bitrate from YouTube’s table for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you intend to stream; these are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder or connection will perform well.
Preflight and troubleshoot the stream
Before going live
- Inspect each source’s duration, audio/video streams, frame rate, dimensions, pixel format, and timebase.
- Normalize video inputs so the properties required by
xfadematch. - Calculate each transition offset using real durations and all preceding overlaps.
- Map the final labeled video and audio outputs, and encode the filtered streams.
- Test with movement and audio representative of the planned stream. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages; its guidance says to “monitor the stream health and review messages.”
Common symptoms and fixes
xfadereports incompatible inputs: check constant-frame-rate behavior and match resolution, pixel format, frame rate, and timebase before the filter.- A later transition starts too early or late: recalculate its offset from the actual output timeline after previous overlaps.
- Audio cuts abruptly: check that the audio branches reach an
acrossfadeand that its duration and sequencing match the intended handoff. - The filtered output fails with stream-copy settings: map the labeled filter outputs and use an encoder instead of attempting to copy filtered streams.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems: review its messages and verify ingest settings, codec, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, bitrate selection, and network conditions.
A filtergraph alone cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Continuous output also depends on the source media, FFmpeg build, compute capacity, network, YouTube account and ingest configuration, and monitoring or restart setup.
