To crossfade songs in a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream, overlap the outgoing and incoming tracks in your playlist playout software before the program reaches the streaming encoder. Liquidsoap documents playlist playback with a built-in crossfade operator and a smart-crossfade example. The encoder then sends that continuous audio-video program to YouTube Live. A crossfade smooths the music transition; it does not provide permission to broadcast the tracks.
What a crossfade does—and where it belongs
A crossfade overlaps two tracks: the outgoing song fades down as the next song fades up. Apply it in the playout or mixing layer that controls the playlist, before encoding. That way, the encoder receives one continuous program rather than separate tracks that need to be joined later.
Liquidsoap’s quickstart demonstrates applying smart crossfading to playlist playback, and its reference documentation describes the crossfade operator. Its smart transition can choose a simpler sequence when overlapping the passages would obscure the music. A scene transition in OBS is not automatically a track-to-track audio crossfade: use the playout layer that owns the song sequence.
Set up playlist playout and crossfading
1. Prepare music you are allowed to broadcast
Use tracks whose rights cover the live broadcast and any archive or replay you plan to make. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If you use licensed music, coordinate with the label or distributor and ask the rights holder about adding your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream can still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted, even when the content is licensed. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. This is platform guidance, not a legal determination; applicable rights depend on the material and circumstances.

2. Check Liquidsoap and its dependencies
Use Liquidsoap’s playlist input and wrap it in crossfade, adapting the official quickstart example to your playlist and output. The current development documentation identifies itself as version 2.5.x. It says the automatic crossfade method has been integrated since version 2.2.5 and that the documented internal method requires FFmpeg bindings. Check your installed release and bindings before adapting an example; configurations and dependencies can vary. The documentation has not been verified here against a particular installation.
3. Tune transitions for the music
Start with the smart transition, then listen to representative pairs of tracks. If both passages are loud, overlap can make the mix muddy; mismatched endings and openings can also sound abrupt or rhythmically awkward. Adjust the crossfade duration or transition rules to suit the material. Liquidsoap’s smart transition considers the loudness near track endings and beginnings and can fade or crossfade where appropriate, or sequence tracks instead when an overlap would mask them.

4. Send the program to YouTube Live
Keep the playout service running and route its output to an encoder configured to send the stream to YouTube Live. If the selected encoder workflow requires an audio-video feed, include a visual signal as well as the program audio. Confirm the encoder settings and stream status in YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube’s API distinguishes the incoming feed from the event viewers watch: a liveStream represents the audio-video input, while a liveBroadcast represents the broadcast. The API documentation describes a feed continuing while a separate broadcast resource is completed; see Understanding Broadcasts and Streams. This distinction helps explain the roles involved, but it does not configure Liquidsoap or an encoder for you.

5. Choose an ingest protocol for a reason
Do not switch protocols to create a crossfade. The transition happens upstream in playlist playout. YouTube’s HLS instructions apply if you choose HLS: they specify TS format, segment durations of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and supported audio codecs. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings if you use HLS; these constraints are protocol-specific, not crossfade settings.
6. Monitor both sound and platform status
Listen to the live output for gaps, abrupt changes, or masked passages, and watch YouTube Live Control Room and YouTube Studio for warnings or interruptions. A technically smooth transition cannot resolve a copyright claim or Content ID issue; follow YouTube’s copyright guidance and contact the label or distributor when licensed music is involved.

Choose a playout setup that can handle the whole chain
Liquidsoap is the software option directly documented here for playlist-based crossfading. Another playout system may suit you if it provides genuine track-level overlap, continuous playlist playback, a feed your encoder can use, and a way to monitor or recover from source failures. These are practical evaluation criteria, not a claim that a particular unreviewed application has a specific feature.
- Does it crossfade tracks, rather than only transition between video scenes?
- Can it play a playlist continuously and handle a missing or failed track?
- Can you control how transitions behave when loudness, rhythm, or track endings differ?
- Can it feed your chosen encoder, and can you monitor the resulting live output?
The documented workflow is software-based; the sources do not establish a dedicated mixer, audio interface, hardware crossfader, or particular computer model as necessary.
