How to cure cholera
Cholera usually follows drinking unsafe water or consuming water from a contaminated container. Vomiting is the dominant warning sign, and dehydration can become dangerous quickly.
- Stop using the suspected bottle, canteen, or water source. Do not refill and reuse it until it has been properly purified.
- Take tetracycline antibiotics, multivitamins, or both. The DayZ Wiki page accessed October 1, 2026 gives a broad requirement of 2–8 multivitamin pills, 2–5 tetracycline pills, or approximately 1–3 of each when taken concurrently; the amount varies with the infection and treatment timing.
- Take only tiny sips and small bites. Large gulps or meals can trigger vomiting, wasting the medication and your remaining hydration.
- Keep energy, water, blood, and health as high as possible. Strong survival stats can let immunity finish clearing cholera.
The cholera icon may disappear before the illness is completely gone. Continue cautious intake and treatment rather than immediately returning to normal-sized meals or drinking from the original source.

How to cure salmonellosis
Salmonellosis comes from raw meat, raw animal fat, rotten food, or eating while your hands are bloody after butchering. Vomiting rapidly drains both energy and hydration, so repeatedly eating to provoke vomiting is counterproductive.
- Discard the suspect food and wash your hands before eating or drinking again.
- Use charcoal tablets according to the current item cooldown and dosing behavior shown in-game.
- Consume food and water in small amounts, pausing between bites and sips to limit further vomiting.
- Maintain strong energy, water, blood, and health; natural recovery is possible when those values stay high.
Salmonellosis and cholera can look similar. The exposure history is the useful distinction: questionable water points to cholera, while raw, rotten, or improperly handled food points to salmonellosis.

How to treat food or chemical poisoning
Poisoning can start soon after you ingest a harmful item and commonly causes vomiting. Vomiting removes part of the poison level, but it also costs water and energy.
- Stop consuming the suspected item immediately.
- Use charcoal tablets. In update 1.27, charcoal tablets became an effective cure for this illness; the required amount varies with the poison and how much was ingested.
- Replace lost fluids and calories slowly once vomiting settles.
Do not treat every vomiting episode as cholera or salmonellosis. The short delay after a known harmful item and the absence of a contaminated-water or raw-food exposure are important clues.

Cold, influenza, and pneumonia progression
Cold is the first stage of the respiratory progression toward influenza and, potentially, pneumonia. Sneezing and coughing can be heard by nearby survivors and infected, making an untreated illness a stealth problem as well as a health problem.
Early respiratory illness
- Keep the character warm and dry.
- Raise food, water, blood, and health instead of allowing prolonged starvation, dehydration, or exposure.
- Use multivitamins while maintaining those stats.
When symptoms progress
The illness guide lists tetracycline when respiratory disease has progressed. Continue warmth, dryness, and careful nutrition while following the current medication cooldown. Cold and influenza can clear through natural immunity when core survival statistics are sufficiently high; do not assume that outcome for every respiratory stage.

A cut can become infected when you bandage it with a dirty rag or bandana, use an unclean sewing kit, or let it heal without proper treatment. Wound infection is more dangerous than the original cut and is not a condition to leave to ordinary immunity.
Early infection
Disinfect the wound immediately with alcohol tincture, iodine, or disinfectant spray. Disinfect dressings and treatment tools before they touch an open wound.

Once the infection has advanced, the illness guide calls for repeated tetracycline treatment. Treat every new cut promptly and replace contaminated dressings; continuing to apply dirty materials can restart the problem.
How to cure toxic gas and PO-X contamination
Entering a static or dynamic gas zone without the required protection is an exposure emergency. Coughing, vomiting, bleeding, and rapidly falling health indicate that leaving is more urgent than opening the inventory.
- Exit the gas cloud immediately and move to clean air.
- After exposure has stopped, use a PO-X antidote autoinjector, or receive a blood transfusion from an uninfected survivor.
- Recover from the health damage normally. The antidote stops the poisoning but does not instantly restore health already lost.
Plan gas-zone trips around the required protection and carry an antidote when possible. Treatment attempted inside the cloud can fail because the exposure continues.
Is there a cure for kuru?
Kuru is a distinct prion disease associated with eating infected human meat. The cited DayZ references do not identify a curative medicine or a dependable immune-clearance route, so it is effectively incurable for that life.
- Do not eat human flesh.
- Keep human meat away from ordinary food and cooking supplies to prevent accidental consumption or contamination during handling.
- If kuru develops, treat the character as permanently affected rather than spending scarce medicine on an unproven cure.
How immunity works in DayZ
Immunity is not a universal antidote. The character-status guidance ties immune strength to energy, water, blood, and health. Keeping all four high can prevent or eventually clear several illnesses, including cholera, salmonellosis, cold, and influenza. It does not replace disinfectant for an infected wound, evacuation and antidote for gas exposure, or a documented cure for kuru.
