Start with YouTube Studio’s built-in moderation: block recurring spam terms, hold potentially inappropriate messages for review, and have a moderator ready to act on anything that gets through. If that is not enough, add slow mode or restrict chat to subscribers or members. These tools reduce disruption, but automated filtering is not perfect and tighter access controls can make it harder for legitimate viewers to join in.
Set up moderation before you go live
Find the current chat controls
In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls. YouTube’s labels and navigation can vary by platform or account view; older instructions may use labels such as “Community” or “Automated Filters.” Look for the current live-chat moderation and content controls in Studio.
Add recurring spam terms
Add words or phrases that repeatedly appear in spam to Blocked words. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching a blocked word are blocked. Treat this as a targeted filter, not a complete solution: it requires upkeep, and altered spellings may evade a list.
Choose what to hold for review
Set potentially inappropriate messages to be held so you or a moderator can decide whether to show or hide them. YouTube describes Basic as holding potentially inappropriate messages and Strict as holding a broader range. Held messages remain hidden unless someone acts on them. YouTube cautions: “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.”

Assign moderators with the right access
Choose moderators who can monitor chat during the event. YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators; managing moderators have additional moderation controls, but do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio. Configure channel-level settings yourself, or make sure the person assigned a task has the necessary access.
Choose a proportionate response while live
Review held messages
Have a moderator check the review queue, show legitimate messages, and leave spam hidden. Filtering is assistance rather than a guarantee, so continue watching messages that appear in chat as well.

Remove, time out, or hide a spammer
For a single unwanted message, a moderator can remove it. If the person keeps spamming, use a timeout to temporarily prevent them from chatting. YouTube’s documented timeout choices range from 10 seconds to 24 hours. For persistent disruption, hiding the user makes their messages and comments invisible to other viewers without notifying them.
Escalate based on the behavior: remove the message, use a timeout for continued posting, and hide a repeat offender when temporary intervention is not enough. These actions require moderator judgment.

Turn on slow mode when chat moves too quickly
Slow mode sets a waiting period between messages from a participant, reducing posting frequency without excluding people from chat. YouTube says the channel owner, moderators, and channel members are not limited by that delay. The added wait can still frustrate viewers who are participating in good faith.
Restrict who can participate only when needed
Subscribers-only live chat can limit participation to subscribers, and may let you require a minimum subscription duration. You can use it with slow mode. YouTube notes that subscriber status is publicly visible to other viewers in this mode and some chat features may be unavailable. A restriction can deter drive-by spam, but also excludes new viewers who have not subscribed long enough.

Members-only live chat restricts participation to channel members. It cannot be enabled at the same time as subscribers-only chat, and it excludes nonmembers. Use it when that restriction is appropriate for your community rather than as a default response to every spam incident.
Turn chat off only as a last operational fallback
If moderators cannot manage a serious disruption, a managing moderator can turn live chat off during the event. This stops chat participation, so reserve it for situations where keeping chat open is not workable.

Choose based on how much viewer friction is acceptable, how broadly you need to restrict participation, and whether moderators can review and respond promptly.
Check chat limits and replay after the event
YouTube’s live-stream guidance says participants may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, with each message limited to 200 characters. These are platform participation limits, not a guarantee against spam.
Live-chat replay is available with stream archives by default, though a channel can turn replay off. Replay is useful for reviewing an incident afterward; it is separate from the live moderation queue and from post-stream video comments.
Troubleshoot common spam problems
- Spam terms still appear: Check that the recurring terms are in the live-chat blocked-words controls, then add newly observed variants. Do not assume the filter catches every variation.
- Held messages are not appearing in chat: That is expected until a creator or moderator chooses to show them. Assign someone to review the queue during the event.
- The spam rate is too high for a moderator: Enable slow mode first to reduce message frequency. If necessary, narrow eligibility with subscribers-only chat or members-only chat, accepting the participation tradeoff.
- A user returns to spam after a message is removed: Use a timeout for continued posting; hide the user for persistent disruption.
- A moderator cannot change a setting: Confirm the person’s role and access. Managing moderators do not have access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, even though they have additional chat moderation controls.
- Chat cannot be kept manageable: A managing moderator can turn live chat off during the event as a last resort.
