A full-price game is worth buying when its experience fits what you want, its cost comfortably fits your budget, and you have a reason to play now. If any of those are uncertain, waiting is a sensible choice—not a guarantee of a particular sale price or date.
Start with the game you want to play
Consider the experience, not just the score or launch-day excitement. Are you looking for this genre, its mechanics, story, challenge, or multiplayer? A widely praised game can still be poor value if it is not the kind of game you enjoy. If your interest is mostly hype or curiosity, waiting can give you time to decide without paying the current price.
Decide whether playing now matters
Full price is simply the store’s current listed price; it does not establish that a game is worth buying. A concrete reason to start now—such as playing with friends who are online at launch or avoiding spoilers—can make the timing more valuable to you. If there is no near-term reason to play, waiting may cost you little beyond patience.
Check the budget and likely use
First ask whether the purchase fits your discretionary budget without crowding out a more important expense. Then consider how you are likely to use the game: main-story content, optional activities, replayability, and multiplayer longevity may all matter, but they are different kinds of play. More hours do not automatically mean more enjoyment, and there is no established dollars-per-hour threshold that objectively determines whether every game is good value.

Assess reception and condition on your platform
Look at reviews and recent player feedback for the platform you intend to use, especially when performance or unresolved problems could affect your experience. Steam’s documentation explains that its store page displays review scores based on positive and negative reviews, along with recent 30-day and lifetime aggregates (Steamworks: User Reviews). Recent and lifetime scores provide different context; neither can tell you whether the game suits you personally.
Compare today’s price with past offers
A price history can help you judge whether the current price is high relative to previous offers. Check the platform, region, edition, and seller before comparing prices. Historical data gives context, not a prediction: it cannot guarantee whether or when another discount will appear.

Read the seller’s refund terms before paying
Refund policies vary by storefront and can depend on timing, playtime, region, purchase type, and applicable law. Treat a refund as a limited safety net, not as a universal trial period. Check the current policy for the seller and your purchase before relying on it.
Steam
Valve says it will, on request, refund a game requested within 14 days of purchase if it has been played for less than two hours; it also says requests outside those conditions may be submitted for review. For Steam pre-orders, Valve says a refund may be requested any time before release. After release, the stated standard is within two weeks of release and below two hours of playtime. Check Steam Support’s Pre-Order Refunds for the terms.
Epic Games Store
Epic says paid games are generally self-refundable or refundable when eligible. Its policy also allows an eligible recent purchase that goes on sale to be refunded and repurchased at the sale price.
