The “remaster” label alone does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, feature set, or upgrade path.
Start with the exact game and platform
Look up the publisher’s page and support FAQ for the remaster’s specific platform, edition, and storefront. A listing for one console or PC version does not establish support for another. Xbox, for example, says only select older games are backward compatible and that features vary by game; it also notes that a download may be required. Check Xbox’s backward-compatible games information for the title you have in mind.
Then identify the version you already own or can play. Backward compatibility may let you run the original game, but that does not necessarily give you the remaster’s graphics modes, added content, or other features. Treat “the original runs on my console” and “I can play the remaster” as separate questions.
Compare the changes that could matter to you
Look beyond the label and make a short list of concrete differences. Relevant changes may include visual modes, loading, accessibility options, new modes or levels, and bundled expansions. The two examples below show why remasters should be judged title by title.
#1 Best Overall
- Updated and reconstructed visuals to be far more realistic and richly textured vs the original game
- Upgraded models for each character, graphical updates for a more immersive environment
- Estimated gameplay hours: 40 to 50 per title
- Sound: Players will be able to choose between original sound and the new, re-arranged sound
| Remaster | Examples of listed additions or changes | What to check for your setup |
|---|---|---|
| The Last of Us Part II Remastered | Roguelike mode, Lost Levels, accessibility additions, and visual updates | Whether you want the new content and which graphics mode suits your display |
| Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered | Multiple graphics modes, accessibility settings, and the Frozen Wilds expansion | Whether the visual modes and included expansion add value for you |
These feature lists come from the games’ official PlayStation pages; they are examples, not a standard remaster checklist. See The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for their listed features.
Check what your hardware can actually show
A mode’s advertised resolution or frame rate is useful only if your platform and display support the relevant output—and if you prefer that mode’s trade-off. The figures below are publisher-listed targets or output descriptions, not independent performance tests.
Rank #2
- Return to the series origins - Discover the truth behind what led to the horrors at the Mansion in Resident Evil in this fan-favorite and popular prequel title to the series.
- Completely enhanced visuals - New high-resolution textures have been created from scratch, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles, while still preserving the classic appearance of the original release.
- Fan-favorite Resident Evil characters - Rookie S.T.A.R.S. member Rebecca Chambers and wanted criminal Billy Coen combine skills and buddy up to survive the undead and infected nightmares that await them.
- All original difficulty levels plus new Very Easy Mode for novice players
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered on PS5: PlayStation lists Quality Mode at 4K/30fps, Performance Mode at 4K/60fps, and Balanced Mode at 4K/40fps. The page describes these frame rates as targets and says 4K requires a compatible display.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PS5: PlayStation describes Fidelity Mode as native 4K and Performance Mode as 1440p upscaled to 4K. Its unlocked frame-rate option depends on a VRR-capable TV.
Those are title-specific specifications, not promises about other remasters. If the mode you value depends on a feature your setup lacks, weigh the remaster against the experience your current hardware can provide rather than the headline figure.
Work out the price and upgrade eligibility
Use the current store page for your region and check the conditions attached to the exact edition you own. An upgrade offer may depend on whether your copy is digital or disc-based, whether your console has a disc drive, how you acquired the original, or whether you have a qualifying subscription claim. The Last of Us Part II Remastered and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered PlayStation pages describe disc-drive restrictions for disc-based upgrades; Horizon’s page also excludes PlayStation Plus redemptions from its stated offer.

- Graphics remastered in beautiful high-definition
- Two brand-new minigames
- Featuring music by Revo of Linked Horizon
- Redesigned UI for a single screen
- Quality of life upgrades: fast-forward, encounter rate settings, upgraded online compatibility for modern networks
Do not treat a past launch price or an offer shown in another region as your price. Compare the live local price with the cost of keeping or buying the original, and account for any expansion or content you would otherwise need to purchase separately. If an upgrade’s eligibility is unclear, consult the game’s current official support information before buying.
Check saves, achievements, and rollback options
Continuity can affect the value of an upgrade, especially if you are mid-playthrough. Check these items separately rather than assuming they all carry over together:
Rank #4
- Includes all expansions and updates in one definitive edition
- Smoother, more responsive combat
- Modern UI and full controller support
- Enhanced textures, lighting effects, and view distance enhanced textures, lighting effects, and view distance
- Community-driven fixes and improved stability
- Saves: Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered’s official FAQ says old saves work.
- Achievements and gameplay changes: CD PROJEKT RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered FAQ says saves and achievements carry over, but the skill-system overhaul resets skills.
- Returning to an earlier version: The same Witcher 3 FAQ says reversion depends on the platform.
These examples illustrate why save compatibility, achievement continuity, and rollback are distinct checks. Consult the FAQ for the specific game and platform you use.

Ask yourself: “Is this remaster worth buying on my platform?” Buy now when the remaster is supported on your hardware, its specific additions matter to you, and the current price feels fair for those benefits. Keep playing the original or wait for a sale when it already meets your needs, the changes do little for your setup, or the upgrade terms make the price poor value.

- FINAL FANTASY X/X 2 HD Remaster brings this timeless classic forward to the current generation of fans, old and new alike.
A useful side-by-side comparison uses the same questions for both versions:
- Does each version run on your platform, and what backward-compatibility features are confirmed?
- What visual modes and target performance are listed, and what display or PC capabilities do they require?
- Are there changes to loading or accessibility?
- Does the remaster add modes, levels, or expansions you want?
- Do saves and achievements carry over, and can you return to the earlier version?
- What is your actual price after checking region, edition, ownership type, upgrade eligibility, and any required disc drive?
- Does the version rely on online services or a subscription condition relevant to you?
Use official specifications to confirm features and conditions. They do not, by themselves, establish how a remaster performs in independent testing or whether you will prefer its image quality.
