Choose based on what the next pull adds to your account, not on a blanket rule that new characters or Eidolons are always better. A new character is usually the stronger choice when they fill a roster gap or are a higher personal priority. An Eidolon can make more sense when you already own the character and that specific upgrade meaningfully improves a team or removes a limitation you care about—without putting a more important future character out of reach.
Start with the value of your next pulls
Think of the decision as a trade-off between two concrete outcomes: a new character who may add a role or team option, and an Eidolon that upgrades a character you already have. Compare what each would change for your account rather than treating either option as inherently more valuable.
- Existing-team impact: What would the Eidolon improve in a team you actually use?
- Roster coverage: Would the new character fill a role, open a team option, or address a gap you notice?
- Versatility: Which option would matter across more of the teams and content you care about?
- Personal priority: Which character or upgrade would you enjoy having more?
- Opportunity cost: What future character might you have to pass up if you spend now?
These are decision criteria, not measured game-wide performance rankings. Available guide evidence is character-specific: one guide describes Dr. Ratio as strong at E0 and cautions that saved pulls could deliver more value elsewhere. That example cannot establish a universal rule or a current ranking.
Evaluate the exact Eidolon, not its number
Eidolons are character-specific upgrades. Their effect may be greater effectiveness or an added capability, but the practical value depends on the particular character, the Eidolon itself, your team, and the content you want to tackle. Ask what changes in your actual use of the character: damage, utility, comfort, team flexibility, or a limitation you find frustrating.

Do not assume an Eidolon is required just because it is desirable, or because it is a higher-numbered upgrade. The evidence here does not establish that any Eidolon is required across the board; a requirement claim needs support for that character and that specific claim.
Check your banner situation before spending
Character Event Warp is time-limited. A community-maintained Honkai: Star Rail Wiki summary reports a maximum of 90 warps to a 5-star, a 50% chance for that 5-star to be the featured character, a featured-character guarantee on the next 5-star after a non-featured one, and carry-over of pity and guarantee status between Character Event Warps. These are mechanic values, not a promise of how many pulls a particular player will need. Confirm the current rules on the live in-game banner and check your account history before deciding.
HoYoverse says Warp outcomes are based on the rates and probabilities listed on the Character Banner. Use those banner-listed probabilities as the official reference for the current banner; pulls are probabilistic, not a forecast of an early result.
Warps use Star Rail Passes or Special Passes, and Stellar Jade can substitute for missing passes. Duplicate characters award Eidolon items. This is an in-game resource decision; buying premium currency is not necessary to apply the framework.

Use this checklist to make the call
- State the payoff. Write down what the exact Eidolon changes, or what role and team option the new character would add.
- Identify your account’s gap. Decide whether a roster need, a specific team goal, or personal preference matters more to you than the upgrade.
- Check pity and guarantee. Record your current Character Event Warp pity and whether your next 5-star is guaranteed featured. The cited wiki summary says these carry across Character Event Warps; verify your status and current rules in-game.
- Price the opportunity cost. Consider which future character the same saved pulls could otherwise pursue. Do not assume a particular number of pulls will secure either outcome.
- Set a stopping point. If the Eidolon is a nice-to-have, choose in advance how much of your reserve you are willing to spend without sacrificing your next priority.
When each option is the better fit
Lean toward a new character when…
- They fill a meaningful gap in the roster or enable a team you want to play.
- You value the added character more than a marginal improvement to a team that already works for you.
- They are a higher personal priority than the character whose Eidolon you would pursue.
Consider the Eidolon when…
- You already own the character and understand the effect of the exact Eidolon.
- The upgrade materially improves a team or addresses a limitation that matters to you.
- Spending for it does not undermine a more important upcoming character priority.
No published statistic establishes which choice is more efficient for players overall. The useful answer is account-specific: choose the outcome you value more, with your current guarantee state and future priorities in view.
