Start with one specific console, identify the few features that make it recognizable, then build and revise a simple model around those features. There is no universal scale or piece count for a custom LEGO console: choose dimensions that suit your parts, desired detail, and whether the result is for display or interaction.
How to design a LEGO model of a retro game console
- Choose a reference console. Pick a particular device or console family before setting proportions. Gather clear front, side, and top views if available, then note its outline, main color blocks, controller shape, and distinctive controls.
- Rank the signature details. Sketch the console’s silhouette and choose the details most important to its identity. At small scales, a clear outline and a few well-placed controls may communicate more than a crowded front panel.
- Choose a practical scale. Decide how large the model should be and how much detail that size can support with the elements you have. A display model and an interactive build may call for different design choices. Treat the dimensions and parts count as your own decisions, not a standard set by LEGO.
- Block out the body. Build the main shape first, then add the face details and controller. Favor sturdy, straightforward connections and shapes that read clearly at your chosen scale. Aim for a recognizable interpretation rather than promising an exact replica.
- Build, inspect, and revise. Check the proportions against the reference, look for weak or awkward connections, and try alternate ways of constructing difficult areas. A digital model can help plan the layout; if real-world strength matters, assemble the design with physical bricks and check it there.
- Plan the instructions. If another person will follow the build, add parts in manageable groups, keep the model’s orientation clear, and choose views that reveal where pieces belong. Ask someone unfamiliar with the model to follow the steps and note hidden connections or confusing transitions.
- Compare and refine. Recheck the silhouette, color layout, and signature details. Revise what is hard to recognize or construct, and show close-ups or diagrams where they help explain the design.
Which console details make a LEGO build recognizable?
Use details that distinguish your chosen reference, not a generic checklist applied to every console. For the NES, LEGO’s product background identifies the control deck, power and reset switches, controller sockets, video and audio outputs, and controller controls such as the directional pad, Select, Start, and A/B buttons. These make useful examples of high-value details; another console may be recognized by a different combination of shape, ports, controls, and colors. LEGO’s NES product background describes its own design and does not establish how closely a new custom build can match the original.
What the official LEGO NES design can teach
LEGO says designers Pablo Gonzalez, Leon Pijnenburg, and Daire McCabe created replicas of the NES and a retro-styled 1980s television. In LEGO’s account, designers matched existing LEGO element sizes to key visual details on the console and controller, helping them make models as close to true-to-scale as possible. For a custom build, the practical lesson is to design around the elements that are available while preserving the details that matter most—not to assume that every model can achieve the same scale fidelity.
How to make the build sequence clear
Designing a model and explaining how to build it are related but separate tasks. LEGO says its instruction team uses purpose-built 3D software to decide which pieces to add at each step and which viewpoint to show. The team also builds models repeatedly in different ways while working out the best construction approach. As LEGO puts it in “How we design our building instructions”, “They also have LEGO bricks at hand and build the model many, many times in different ways to come up with the best way of building.”

Apply that principle by trying alternate construction sequences, keeping each step’s orientation understandable, and checking that the instructions make connections visible. LEGO’s guidance does not set a maximum number of pieces per step or a testing standard for custom models; use a reader’s ability to follow the sequence as your practical check.
Should you design digitally or with physical bricks?
Either can be a useful starting point. Physical bricks let you handle and revise the model directly. Digital planning can help explore element placement and layout before committing to a physical version, but a digital design alone does not establish how stable a finished build will be. LEGO has identified BrickLink Studio as a tool for making LEGO models in a feature about digital creation; that historical reference does not confirm the tool’s current availability, features, or price. Use the official 31380 set as a reference, not a template
LEGO’s 2026 listing for Creator Retro Gaming Console set 31380 identifies it as an 8+ set with 268 pieces and three instruction PDFs. Those figures describe that retail set, not a recommended age, scale, or parts count for a custom console.
