How to Design a Live Stream Overlay: A Practical OBS Workflow

A practical workflow for planning, building, and testing a live stream overlay that keeps gameplay or the presenter in focus.

Design a live stream overlay by choosing the output format first, keeping gameplay or the presenter visually dominant, preparing suitable transparent assets, and arranging them as ordered sources in OBS. Then check the complete scene at the sizes and on the devices viewers will use.

Plan the overlay around the stream

Choose the canvas and viewing format

Decide whether the stream is horizontal, vertical, or intended for both before making graphics. OBS recommends a common 16:9 format such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720; these are examples, not mandatory resolutions for every platform or format. See the OBS Aspect Ratio Guide.

If vertical viewing matters, design an adapted portrait composition rather than assuming a horizontal scene will simply fit. Twitch’s dual-format guidance recommends adapting selected scenes, centering important visuals, considering safe zones, and testing on a mobile device. The guidance available here does not establish exact safe-zone measurements, so check the current platform guidance rather than guessing at pixel values.

Decide what deserves screen space

Write down the essentials: the game or presentation, a webcam if you use one, and only the identifiers or status information that help viewers. Give the primary content the largest, clearest area. Treat every frame, label, effect, and social bar as a trade-off: it occupies part of the picture viewers came to see.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use a clear hierarchy, consistent alignment, restrained typography, and enough contrast to read at the intended output size. Twitch’s design guidance is written for Twitch extensions, not as a technical rulebook for every OBS overlay, but its points about limited screen space, contrast, hierarchy, responsiveness, and possible conflict with player controls are useful design considerations.

Prepare overlay graphics

Pick a format that supports the asset

For static graphics that need transparency, Elgato’s OBS overlay guide recommends PNG. For animated graphics with transparency, it recommends WEBM. Keep the file appropriate to the job: a static nameplate does not need animation, while an animated element should remain legible and unobtrusive.

Match frames to the camera

A webcam frame can be widescreen, 4:3, vertical, or square depending on the camera and composition. If the opening is nonrectangular, use a mask so the camera image conforms to the intended shape without spilling into the frame. Make sure the frame does not consume so much space that the camera obscures the game.

Use templates only if they fit

A template or asset pack can save time, while custom graphics offer more control over the visual identity. Either way, check transparency, readability at the target size, and how much screen area the design occupies before building the rest of the scene around it.

Build and layer the scene in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene: In OBS, add the scene you want to use for the stream. A separate scene can help when you need a distinct layout, such as a vertical version.
  2. Add the background and overlay art: Add an image source for the background or static graphic, then position and resize it in the preview.
  3. Add the captured content: Add the game, display, or other capture source and place it so the important action remains visible.
  4. Add webcam and text sources: Position the camera frame, labels, and any brief identifiers where they support the content without obstructing it.
  5. Set source order: In OBS’s Sources list, items higher in the list appear in front of items below them. Put backgrounds behind captured content and foreground frames or labels above the sources they should cover. Check the preview after reordering.

The OBS BRB-scene tutorial demonstrates a scene-based workflow using image and text sources, positioning, resizing, and source order.

Scale or crop mismatched content carefully

When an image or source does not match the canvas ratio, avoid stretching it as the automatic fix. OBS notes that stretching can distort or blur an image. Scaling can preserve the image’s proportions, while cropping can fill a space at the cost of removing part of the source. Choose based on what viewers need to see, then inspect the result in the preview.

Preview the overlay at viewer size

  • Check the complete scene, not just individual files in a graphics editor.
  • Look for text that is too small, weak contrast, clipped edges, misalignment, and graphics covering important action.
  • For vertical output, inspect the adapted composition on a mobile device and account for platform interface elements.
  • Test with representative movement and audio before going live. YouTube recommends testing under conditions similar to the planned stream, choosing a quality your connection can sustain, and monitoring stream health. These are general stream checks, not an overlay-specific formal test standard; see YouTube’s encoder settings and stream-health guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate option from designing and running an OBS scene yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, it supports the quality you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera.
