It depends on which hive you mean. In the story mission One Flew Over the Volatiles’ Nest, you do not destroy the nest itself: defeat the Wraith, collect three samples, escape the Volatiles, and return to the exile cave. For open-world nighttime hives, players report killing the Volatile emerging from the hive, then leaving before others converge.
First, identify which hive you are facing

The story-mission steps come from an unofficial walkthrough; the open-world method is player-reported rather than an official mechanic description. The sources do not support treating explosives as a universal way to destroy every hive.

Complete the story cave mission
Prepare before entering
The walkthrough recommends bringing healing items and a flamethrower or fire-modified weapon for the boss section. Techland describes crafting as a way to make weapons, traps, explosives, and healing items from scavenged parts, but does not prescribe a particular hive loadout in its crafting overview.
Defeat the Wraith, then collect the samples
- Reach the volatile nest and navigate into the cave.
- Deal with the Wraith before continuing deeper. The walkthrough describes the fight in three phases.
- Use Survivor Sense near the second and third samples to track patrols. Wait for a Volatile to move away, collect the marked sample quickly, and retreat behind cover.
- Collect all three samples. According to the walkthrough, the chase begins after the third one.
- Escape the pursuing Volatiles and return to the exile cave to finish the mission.
Reaching the nest or attacking its structure is not listed as completing the mission. The required objectives are the Wraith fight, all three samples, and the escape back to the cave.

Try the player-reported method for an open-world hive
For a nighttime hive encounter outside the story cave, player discussions describe a Volatile emerging from or attached to the hive. Their reported approach is to kill that Volatile, then leave toward a safe route because other Volatiles may investigate. Treat this as community-reported behavior: the official material reviewed does not give a step-by-step open-world hive destruction mechanic, nor does it establish that Molotovs or another particular weapon will work.

Techland’s Update 1.5 notes, dated December 17, 2025, say Nightmare Experience makes enemies more challenging and resources more limited. The notes also say some Dark Zones may contain Volatiles during the day and describe an Alpha Volatile that ignores flashlight UV light. These changes can affect preparation and escape expectations, but the notes do not specify hive-destruction steps.

The available sources do not establish that open-world hive behavior is identical in the base game, New Game+, and Nightmare Experience, so do not assume spawns or rewards are the same across modes.
