How to Detect Black Frames in Videos Before Adding Them to a YouTube Stream

Scan the final video with FFmpeg’s blackdetect filter, inspect every flagged timestamp, then test and monitor the actual YouTube feed in Live Control Room.

Scan the final video with FFmpeg’s blackdetect filter, then review the timestamps it reports. The filter flags intervals that are almost completely black; it cannot tell whether a dark scene, fade, or pause is intentional. Before going live, separately check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream health: a clean source file does not prove that the correct picture is reaching YouTube.

Scan the video file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s blackdetect filter looks for video intervals that are “(almost) completely black.” It writes detections to the log and frame metadata. This is a file-level check: it analyzes the video you give it, not the live feed that will later be sent to YouTube. See the FFmpeg filter documentation for the filter options and details.

Run a near-black interval scan

With FFmpeg installed, open a terminal in the folder containing the video and run:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "blackdetect=d=0.5:pix_th=0.10:pic_th=0.98" -an -f null -

Replace input.mp4 with your file’s name or path. This example asks FFmpeg to report near-black intervals at least half a second long. It retains the documented default pixel and picture thresholds; it is an example, not a universal setting. FFmpeg prints detections in its log, including start, end, and duration information. If you specifically need to flag individual near-black frames rather than intervals, consult the same documentation for blackframe.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Understand the thresholds

  • d sets the minimum duration of a black interval. The documented default is 2 seconds; the command above uses 0.5 seconds to flag shorter intervals too.
  • pix_th sets how dark an individual pixel must be to count as black, scaled to the input luma range. Its documented default is 0.10.
  • pic_th sets the minimum fraction of the picture that must meet the pixel threshold for the picture to count as black. Its documented default is 0.98.

These are FFmpeg software defaults, not editorial rules. A high picture-ratio threshold can miss a black patch that covers only part of the image; a more permissive pixel threshold can flag deliberately dark footage. Check the behavior against your installed FFmpeg version and representative clips before settling on settings.

Review every flagged timestamp before changing the edit

A detection is a review flag, not proof that something went wrong. In a game stream, a fade to black, a deliberate intermission card, a dark scene, or a pause may be part of the intended presentation. An accidental gap, failed capture, or encoding problem may look similar to the filter.

  1. Scan the final encoded file you plan to stream, not only an earlier editing export.
  2. Write down the start, end, and duration of each reported interval.
  3. Seek to each timestamp and inspect several frames before and after it. Use the surrounding audio and scene changes as context.
  4. Decide whether the interval is intentional or a confirmed fault, such as an edit gap or failed source.
  5. Correct only confirmed faults, render the final version, and scan that rendered file again.

Check the actual YouTube feed before and during the stream

The file scan cannot establish that the right source, scene, encoder, or outgoing connection will be used at showtime. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the intended event, checking the preview in Live Control Room before starting, and monitoring stream health, messages, and audio/video quality while live. Its guidance also recommends verifying that the event is accessible on the channel and watch pages and on mobile. See YouTube’s streaming tips and encoder settings and test guidance.

YouTube’s reviewed guidance documents preview, stream health, and troubleshooting; it does not document a dedicated black-frame detector in Live Control Room. If the outgoing picture or sound is poor, YouTube advises checking the encoder output and investigating the local archive. Its current encoder page is the place to verify codec, bitrate, frame-rate, and protocol requirements, which are separate from black-frame detection. For stream faults, see YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.
