Start with the outlet, charger, cable, and connector, then give a deeply discharged device time to respond. Check for signs that it is powered but the screen is blank, and use only the manufacturer’s reset instructions for the exact model. If you see swelling, corrosion, or physical damage—or safe external checks do not help—stop and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician.
What can cause a device not to turn on?
A drained battery, failed or loose power connection, display problem, temporary software or power-state issue, or internal defect can all produce a device that appears dead. The symptom alone does not identify the failed part. LG lists a drained battery and a loose or incompletely inserted AC adapter connection as common causes for a notebook that will not power on (LG notebook troubleshooting).
Use the checks below in order. They apply broadly to phones, laptops, and other electronics, but charging requirements, indicators, reset procedures, and repair options depend on the exact model.
1. Check the outlet, charger, cable, and connection
- Test the outlet. Try a wall outlet known to work. If practical, check it with another device.
- Reseat the connections. Confirm the adapter is connected to the outlet and that every cable end is firmly inserted into the adapter and device.
- Inspect the equipment. Look for fraying, bent parts, looseness, corrosion, or other visible damage on the adapter, cable, and device port. Do not force the connector or insert metal objects into a port.
- Check compatibility before trying another charger. Use a charger and cable approved for the exact device and its power requirements. Google recommends testing charging equipment with another device and trying compatible alternatives; ASUS advises checking the original adapter and cable and inspecting for a loose or damaged connection (Google Android Help; ASUS troubleshooting).
Do not assume that any USB-C port accepts charging or that any USB-C adapter provides the power a device needs. ASUS advises checking the model manual to confirm the port supports battery charging. The manual is also the place to verify the required charger and connector.

- ACCURATE CIRCUIT BREAKER IDENTIFICATION: Quickly locate the correct breaker with precision using our circuit breaker finder, ensuring efficient electrical troubleshooting
- TWO-PART SYSTEM: Consists of a Transmitter connected to the outlet/fixture and a Receiver to scan the panel, allowing for easy and accurate breaker identification
- CLEAR INDICATIONS: The Receiver provides visual and audible cues when the correct breaker is found, ensuring a hassle-free locating process
- WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Operates on 90-120V AC circuits, making it suitable for a variety of electrical systems and installations
- BUILT-IN GFCI TESTER: The Transmitter includes a GFCI outlet tester, enabling you to inspect wiring conditions and test GFCI devices for added safety
2. Allow time for a deeply discharged battery
With verified working, compatible power connected, wait before repeatedly pressing the power button. A very low battery may not show an indicator or start immediately. Google’s guidance for an Android phone in the fully discharged, red-light condition is to charge it for at least 30 minutes before restarting; that timing is specific to that guidance, not a universal wait time for other models (Google Android Help). Follow the device maker’s instructions if they specify a different charging period.
3. Check whether the device is on but the screen is blank
Look for model-appropriate signs of activity: a charging icon, status light, sound, vibration, keyboard light, or other response. Indicator meanings vary by model, and the absence of a battery icon does not by itself prove that a device has no power. Google notes that a screen problem is possible when an Android phone shows neither a battery icon nor a red light after connection (Google Android Help).

- ACCURATE CIRCUIT BREAKER IDENTIFICATION: Quickly locate the correct breaker with precision using the transmitter and receiver of the circuit breaker finder, ensuring efficient electrical troubleshooting
- CLEAR INDICATIONS: The Receiver provides visual and audible cues when the correct breaker is found, ensuring a hassle-free locating process on 90-120V AC circuits
- BUILT-IN GFCI TESTER: The Transmitter includes a GFCI outlet tester, enabling you to inspect wiring conditions and test GFCI devices for added safety
- LIGHT SOCKET AND GROUNDING ADAPTERS: Easily find the correct circuit for a lighting fixture with the light socket adapter, and use the included 3-prong to 2-prong grounding adapter for added convenience
- ALLIGATOR CLIP ADAPTER: Enables testing on bare wires, providing versatile usage options
If a phone may be active, a call or notification can help distinguish a blank display from a device that has not started. For other devices, check the manufacturer’s screen-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than assuming the display is working or failed.
4. Try only the reset for the exact model
A temporary power-state problem may respond to a forced restart or reset, but button combinations are not universal. Use the official instructions for your device’s model and follow them exactly. For example, Google’s Android guidance describes holding the power button for 5–7 seconds in its phone troubleshooting flow, while ASUS directs notebook and handheld users to model-dependent EC, RTC, or hard-reset procedures (Google Android Help; ASUS troubleshooting).

- NON-CONTACT DETECTION of AC voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, non-tamper-resistant outlets, and wires
- CLEAR INDICATION: Bright LED illuminates green to indicate tester is operational and flashes red and emits a beeping alert when voltage is detected
- BROAD APPLICATION with a 50 to 1000V AC power detection range
- CONSERVE BATTERIES with auto power-off function
- LIGHTWEIGHT AND DURABLE compact design with a convenient clip fits securely in pocket; 6.6-Foot (2 m) drop protection
Do not apply a phone button sequence to a laptop, or one laptop’s reset sequence to another model. If you cannot identify the exact procedure in the manufacturer’s support material or manual, do not guess.
What the clues suggest—and what to do next
| Possibility | Observable clues | Next safe step |
|---|---|---|
| Outlet, adapter, cable, or connection problem | No charging indicator; a loose or damaged plug or cable; or another device also fails on that adapter | Verify the outlet and connections, then test only with equipment confirmed compatible with the device (Google; ASUS). |
| Deeply discharged or failed battery | The device has been unused or depleted, or a charging indicator appears only after a delay | Allow the model-appropriate charging time and follow the manufacturer’s battery checks (Google; HP; Dell Inspiron and Vostro). |
| Power is present, but the display is blank | Sound, vibration, a status light, or another response without visible screen output | Check the exact model’s screen guidance; seek service if the display remains blank (Google Android Help; Verizon). |
| Temporary power-state or software problem | Charging is indicated, but startup does not complete | Follow the manufacturer’s reset instructions for the exact model (Google; ASUS; LG). |
| Physical damage or internal fault | Swelling, corrosion, visible damage, or persistent failure after external checks | Stop ordinary troubleshooting and contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician (Verizon; HP; LG). |
When to stop and get help
Stop charging tests if the battery is swollen or deformed, the port appears damaged or corroded, or the adapter or cable is visibly damaged. Do not press on a swollen battery or attempt to open or repair a damaged device unless the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly direct you to qualified service. HP has specific safety guidance for swollen or deformed notebook batteries, and Verizon includes battery swelling and port corrosion among damage checks (HP battery guidance; Verizon troubleshooting).
