Java Edition: open Options > Chat Settings, set Chat Mode to Hidden, and return to the game. This hides chat, system messages, and command messages on that client. For a child account, use Microsoft/Xbox communication permissions when you need to restrict who can communicate—not merely hide messages on one screen.
Hide all chat in Minecraft: Java Edition
- Start Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Options.
- Select Chat Settings.
- Set Chat Mode to Hidden.
The Java setting is local to that game client. It changes what the player sees; it does not stop other players from sending messages or prevent those players from seeing their own chat.
Choose the right Java Chat Mode

Reduce chat without removing it
Chat Settings also includes controls for color, web links, text and background opacity, text size, line spacing, chat delay, chat-box dimensions, narrator, and command suggestions. Adjust those when chat is useful but too distracting or visually intrusive.
What to do on Bedrock Edition
Minecraft has separate Bedrock and Java help pages for hiding game chat with mute or block, but a current, universal Bedrock menu path is not established here. Bedrock menus can vary by platform and version, so do not rely on the Java path or on an old console tutorial. Open the in-game chat, accessibility, and player-interaction settings on your platform and compare the labels with a current official Minecraft guide before changing a setting.

If the goal is to stop a child communicating online, use the account controls below rather than treating a local display option as a communication restriction.
Restrict chat for a child account
Microsoft/Xbox privacy settings control account communication. The documented setting “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” has three choices:
- Everyone
- Friends
- Block
This is an account-level permission. It is different from Java’s Hidden mode: hiding chat changes the local display, while the privacy setting limits who may communicate with the account.
Use the Xbox Family app
Minecraft says the Xbox Family app can manage social settings for child accounts in both Bedrock and Java Edition, including who the child can communicate with through Minecraft chat. Change the child account’s social setting in the app, then restart Minecraft so the change takes effect.

Minecraft’s parental-control features are not provided for versions earlier than Java 1.16.4 or for modded versions. Keep the game current when you need the supported safety controls; this limitation does not establish that every older client lacks every chat-display option.
Hide one player instead of all chat
Java’s Player Reporting screen includes a chat-box button that hides all messages from a selected player. Those messages remain visible to other players. This is narrower than global chat hiding and is useful when one person is the problem but you still want to read the rest of the conversation.

Minecraft lists separate Hide Game Chat with Mute or Block guides for Java and Bedrock, plus a guide explaining mute and block. Their exact current Bedrock behavior and menu steps should be checked in the matching, up-to-date guide rather than assumed from Java.

Realms profanity filtering is separate
An adult account holder can switch off the Java Edition Realms profanity filter in Minecraft.net account settings. Child accounts cannot disable that filter. The filter concerns profanity, not whether chat is visible; other Realms players’ messages are affected by their own settings.
Why some messages may still be filtered
Minecraft uses automated proactive chat filtering on Java and Bedrock Realms and on partnered or verified Bedrock servers. That moderation system is separate from your local chat display and does not replace parental communication permissions.
The Bottom Line
For Java, use Options > Chat Settings > Chat Mode: Hidden to remove all chat from your screen. For child safety, change Microsoft/Xbox communication permissions; for a single nuisance player, use that player’s hide, mute, or block control. Bedrock’s exact all-chat path depends on the current platform interface and should be verified in a current guide.
