If you only want to stop accidental Win+G pop-ups or controller launches, disable Xbox Game Bar in Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar. Uninstall the AppX package with PowerShell only when you specifically want it removed. Capture settings, Game Mode, Xbox mode, the Xbox app and Gaming Services are separate controls.
Choose the right fix first

Menu wording varies between Windows 11 releases, editions, device configurations and managed PCs. Microsoft documents Game Bar, Captures and Game Mode as separate areas in Windows Settings, and documents Win+G as the shortcut that opens Game Bar when enabled (Microsoft Support).
Before changing anything
- Back up recordings and screenshots you need from
%USERPROFILE%VideosCaptures. Microsoft documents MP4 recordings and PNG screenshots in this default folder. - Create a Windows restore point before registry editing or other advanced changes.
- Do not use a broad command such as
Get-AppxPackage *xbox* | Remove-AppxPackage; it can target more than Game Bar. - On a work or school PC, policies may block Settings, PowerShell, Microsoft Store or AppX changes. Do not bypass those controls; contact the administrator.
Disable Xbox Game Bar without uninstalling it
- Press Windows+I to open Settings.
- Open Gaming, then select Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn off the available option that enables Game Bar or allows an Xbox/controller button to open it. The exact label can differ by build.
- Close and reopen the affected game or app. Restart Windows if the overlay still appears.
This is the safest choice when you may want the overlay later. It does not uninstall the package and does not automatically change every capture or gaming feature.

Stop automatic recording, screenshots and microphone capture
If the problem is recording or capture notifications rather than the overlay, open Settings > Gaming > Captures. Turn off background recording and any recording, audio or microphone options shown on your build. Existing files are not automatically removed; inspect VideosCaptures before deleting anything.

Game Bar’s documented shortcuts include Win+Alt+R to start or stop recording, Win+Alt+M to toggle the microphone during recording, and Win+Alt+Print Screen to take a screenshot (Microsoft’s shortcut and storage guidance). Disabling Captures does not by itself remove Game Bar.
Check Installed apps for a graphical uninstall
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox Game Bar, open its three-dot menu and look for Uninstall.
- If Windows offers the button, use it and restart.
If Uninstall is missing or disabled, that is not necessarily an error. Windows treats some built-in apps differently from ordinary desktop programs, and Microsoft notes that some cannot be removed through normal Settings controls (Windows app-removal guidance).
Remove the Game Bar package with PowerShell
This is an advanced AppX procedure commonly provided in Microsoft Q&A, not a guaranteed permanent consumer uninstall workflow. It normally targets the current user’s installation. Save any captures first and create a restore point.

Identify the package before removing it
- Open Start and search for PowerShell or Windows Terminal.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Inspect the installed package:
Get-AppxPackage *XboxGamingOverlay* | Select-Object Name, PackageFullNameThe relevant package identity is generally Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay. If the command produces no output, Game Bar may already be absent for that account, installed under a different account, provisioned differently, or named differently on that PC.
Remove the current user’s package
If the inspection identifies the Xbox Gaming Overlay package, run:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay | Remove-AppxPackageIf the exact-name command finds nothing, the narrower wildcard form can accommodate a package-name variation:

Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay* | Remove-AppxPackageRestart Windows, then test Win+G and the controller button. These commands and their limitations are discussed in Microsoft Q&A (package-removal example and wildcard guidance).

Why not use the all-users command by default?
An often-cited broader command is:
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -PackageTypeFilter Bundle -Name "*Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay*" | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsersIt attempts to affect multiple accounts and requires administrative rights. Provisioning, permissions, account state and Windows servicing rules can cause it to fail. Use it only when you understand the multi-user impact; it is not the normal choice for a personal PC.
If PowerShell removal fails
- Run
Get-AppxPackage *XboxGamingOverlay*and confirm that a package exists for the account in which you are working. - Reopen Terminal or PowerShell with Run as administrator, checking that the command was pasted exactly.
- Try the narrow wildcard command, not a broad
*xbox*match. - Restart Windows and check again; another process can temporarily hold an app package.
- If the app is still present but malfunctioning, use Repair and Reset instead of forcing removal.
- If a game or controller workflow breaks after removal, reinstall Game Bar from Microsoft Store before touching other Xbox packages.
A “no package found” result can simply mean that it is already removed for the current user. It can also indicate a different account context or managed/provisioned installation; it is not a reason to escalate blindly to removing every Xbox package.

Repair or reset instead of uninstalling
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox Game Bar, open the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair first.
- If the problem remains, select Reset. Reset can erase the app’s stored data and settings.
Microsoft recommends Repair before Reset for supported Windows apps (repair and reset guidance). This is a troubleshooting path, not a disablement method.

- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library.
- Search for Xbox Game Bar or locate it in your available apps.
- Select Install; use Get updates if the Store offers an update instead.
Microsoft’s Store troubleshooting guidance recommends updating Windows and Microsoft Store, then repairing, resetting or reinstalling the app from Library (Microsoft Store app guidance). If Microsoft Store is unavailable on an organization-managed device, ask the administrator rather than bypassing policy.
Optional registry fallback
Use the registry only when Settings does not expose the control and you understand the risk. Export the key or create a restore point first. Registry changes normally affect the current Windows user, and you should restart afterward.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 Settings reference lists these mappings (registry-value reference). Do not invent values such as Disabled and assume they work on every build. To reverse a change, restore the exported key or return the original value; delete only a value you created and understand.
Do not confuse Game Bar with other gaming features
- Xbox Game Bar: the overlay, controller launch behavior and capture shortcuts.
- Captures/Game DVR: recording, screenshots and microphone settings.
- Game Mode: a separate Windows gaming setting; disabling it is not required to disable Game Bar.
- Xbox app and Gaming Services: separate packages that some games may use.
- Xbox mode: a newer gaming experience on supported Windows 11 24H2-or-later configurations, separate from the ordinary Game Bar package (Microsoft’s Xbox mode overview).
When the overlay still appears
- You may have disabled Captures but not the Game Bar/controller-launch option.
- A keyboard macro, controller remapper or vendor utility may be invoking a different overlay.
- The notification may come from another app.
- Your device may expose Xbox mode or another gaming-shell feature instead of only Game Bar.
If removal works but Game Bar returns after a later Windows update, treat that as a possibility reported in Microsoft Q&A rather than a universal Windows rule; managed or refreshed installations can behave differently (Q&A discussion of components returning).
