Quick fix: turn off UI Navigation
- Press Esc while you are in the Roblox experience.
- Choose Settings from the in-experience menu.
- Scroll down to the accessibility options.
- Find UI Navigation Toggle and set it to Off.
- Return to the experience and click inside the game viewport with your mouse or touchpad.
Roblox describes this option as the control for whether the Backslash key can enter and leave UI Navigation mode. It recommends disabling the setting if you enter UI Navigation accidentally. See the current Roblox in-experience Settings and Help guide.
If you are already stuck in UI Navigation mode
Press the UI Selection Toggle shortcut once before or after changing the setting. Roblox’s keyboard-navigation announcement identifies the default binding as the Backslash key:
- When no interface element is selected, the key selects one.
- When an interface element is already selected, the key clears the selection.
After pressing it, click the game window again and test movement. If the outline or focus marker disappears, your normal movement keys should stop being treated as menu-navigation input.

Which key is Backslash on your keyboard?
The important detail is the key Roblox maps to the logical BackSlash key—not necessarily the character printed on its keycap.
- US keyboards: this is normally the key marked
and|, near Enter. - UK and some other layouts: the corresponding physical key may be labeled
#,~, or another symbol.
Community reports on the Roblox Developer Forum describe this layout difference, so do not assume that every keyboard will display a backslash symbol. If the usual printed key does nothing, try the physical key in the equivalent position that your layout uses for Backslash. Roblox’s original keyboard-navigation documentation is available in its keyboard-navigation announcement.
Why Roblox seems to stop responding to movement
UI Navigation changes what the keyboard is controlling. Once an interface element is selected, arrow keys and W, A, S, and D can move focus between interface elements rather than functioning only as avatar controls. Pressing Enter activates the selected element.

That can look like a frozen character, a broken keyboard, or a game that has trapped your input. In reality, Roblox may still be receiving the keystrokes; it is routing them to interface navigation. The feature can also be activated accidentally when the Backslash shortcut is pressed during play.

Backslash does not clear the selection? Try these steps
- Press the layout-equivalent key. Use the physical key Roblox associates with Backslash, even if the key is labeled with another character.
- Restore focus to Roblox. Click inside the game viewport. Roblox documents mouse or touch interaction as a way to leave keyboard or gamepad input mode in the desktop app; clicking also helps if another window currently has focus. See Roblox’s desktop app input-mode documentation.
- Disconnect an unwanted controller. Turn off or unplug a gamepad if you are not using one. Gamepads can participate in directional UI selection, so an active controller may make focus appear to move independently. Roblox documents default directional UI selection for gamepads in its console and gamepad guidelines.
- Leave and rejoin the experience. This is a recovery attempt if the selection state does not clear. It is not a guaranteed fix for every input problem.
- Test another experience. If your avatar moves normally elsewhere, the original experience may have its own interface, custom input binding, or a game-specific bug.
How to tell whether the problem is UI Navigation

What disabling UI Navigation Toggle does—and does not do
Turning UI Navigation Toggle off prevents the Roblox Backslash shortcut from accidentally entering or exiting UI Navigation mode. It is the appropriate player-facing fix for accidental menu focus.
It does not:
- repair a damaged or disconnected keyboard;
- change an experience’s custom movement controls;
- fix a disconnected or malfunctioning gamepad;
- solve every case where an avatar cannot move;
- repair an experience-specific scripting or input bug.
There is no evidence that a driver updater, registry cleaner, streaming service, or replacement gaming keyboard is needed for ordinary Roblox UI Navigation. Check the Roblox setting and input focus first. Consider hardware troubleshooting only if the keyboard also fails to send input in other applications or cannot send the relevant shortcut.

Player setting versus developer setting
Players should use the in-experience UI Navigation Toggle. Roblox developers have separate Creator-side controls and should not ask ordinary players to run code to change a client setting.
The GuiService API reference includes properties such as GuiNavigationEnabled, CoreGuiNavigationEnabled, AutoSelectGuiEnabled, and SelectedObject. These affect how an experience manages interface navigation and are not normal player troubleshooting commands.

The correct implementation depends on the experience’s interface design. A player cannot reliably fix another developer’s navigation script by changing these Creator APIs locally.

When the problem is not UI Navigation
If the setting is off, the selection is cleared, the game window has focus, and movement still fails, work through the remaining possibilities:
- Check the experience’s control instructions; its movement keys may differ from the standard scheme.
- Test the keyboard in a text field or another application.
- Reconnect or replace the keyboard only if it shows broader hardware symptoms.
- Disconnect other controllers and input devices temporarily.
- Compare the behavior in a second Roblox experience.
- Rejoin the experience if the issue began after a menu or interface became unresponsive.
If the keyboard works elsewhere but one experience still ignores movement, the likely cause is that experience’s controls or a temporary experience-specific problem—not the global UI Navigation Toggle.

Why do WASD and the arrow keys move through Roblox menus?
