To stop Windows 10’s gaming capture features, use the least disruptive setting that matches your goal: turn off background recording under Settings > Gaming > Captures, or disable the Xbox Game Bar under Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar. Use the registry only when those controls are missing or ineffective.
Game Bar and Game DVR are related, but different
Xbox Game Bar is the overlay opened with Win+G. It provides widgets for recording, screenshots, audio, performance information, chat and invites. Game DVR is the capture system behind background recording, game clips and screenshots. Newer Windows 10 builds usually call these controls Xbox Game Bar and Captures, rather than using a single “Game DVR” switch.
Disabling background recording does not necessarily stop the overlay. Disabling Game Bar can stop the overlay and its shortcuts, but it also removes those widgets and Game Bar recording controls.

Choose the smallest change that solves the problem

Turn off Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10 Settings
- Press Windows+I to open Settings.
- Select Gaming, then Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn off the option whose wording resembles Enable Xbox Game Bar for things like recording game clips, chatting with friends, and receiving game invites.
- If shown, turn off the option allowing an Xbox controller’s button to open Game Bar.
Labels vary by Windows 10 build, language and installed Xbox components. Microsoft documents the Game Bar controls, shortcuts and capture behavior in its Xbox Game Bar support guide.

Stop Game DVR background recording
- Open Settings > Gaming > Captures.
- Under background recording, turn off Record in the background while I’m playing a game.
- Review the audio, microphone, recording length, frame-rate and video-quality options if they remain available.
This is the best choice if you want to stop automatic recording overhead but still want Game Bar’s widgets or manual capture. Microsoft troubleshooting guidance identifies this switch as the control for automatic background capture.
Verify the change
Fully close and relaunch the game, then test Win+G and Win+Alt+R. Game Bar recordings normally appear in %USERPROFILE%VideosCaptures. Disabling the feature does not delete existing files there.

After Game Bar is disabled, Win+G, Win+Alt+R and Win+Alt+Print Screen may no longer work. Other tools—Steam, NVIDIA, AMD, OBS, Discord or a game’s own recorder—are unaffected.
Registry fallback: disable Game DVR for the current user
Use this only when the Settings controls are unavailable or do not work. Export the keys first or create a restore point. These are HKEY_CURRENT_USER settings, so they affect the signed-in Windows profile, not automatically every account. Microsoft-hosted community guidance identifies the following values; Microsoft has also warned that unnecessary registry editing carries risk.

regedit, and press Enter. - Go to

GameDVR_Enabledto0. - Close Registry Editor and sign out and back in, or restart Windows.
To re-enable the feature, set both values to 1, then sign out or restart. If a value is missing, confirm the path and account first; do not create several entries from an unverified guide. Organizational policy or a damaged package may be the real cause.

Should you uninstall Xbox Game Bar?
Usually, no. Turning off the settings disables the behavior without removing Xbox Game Bar, Xbox services, Gaming Services or Store dependencies. Package removal varies between Windows builds and can cause ms-gamingoverlay errors when a game or controller tries to invoke the missing protocol. Microsoft also notes that some built-in apps cannot be removed through ordinary Settings controls.
If you removed or damaged the package and see that error, repair or reinstall Xbox Game Bar through the Microsoft Store before deleting more registry entries. Community examples such as Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage are not universal removal instructions and may not target the modern Game Bar package.

If Game Bar still appears
- Confirm both Xbox Game Bar and Captures pages, rather than looking under Privacy or an old Xbox-app menu.
- Disable the controller-launch option and check Xbox Accessories, Steam Input and controller software.
- Restart Windows, fully close the game and test again after registry changes.
- Identify another overlay: Steam, NVIDIA ShadowPlay, AMD Adrenalin, Discord, OBS, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner or the game’s own replay system.
- If a switch is missing or greyed out, consider a different Windows build, missing or damaged Xbox components, unsupported hardware or work/school policy. A managed PC may override local settings.
Will disabling it increase FPS?
It may reduce background encoder, GPU, CPU, storage and disk activity, but there is no guaranteed FPS increase. If background recording was already off, disabling the overlay itself may have little measurable effect. Test the game with the same graphics settings and frame-rate measurement before and after; other overlays and drivers may be the actual source of stutter.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It still runs, but Microsoft no longer provides normal feature updates, technical assistance or security fixes. Disabling Game Bar does not restore support; see Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle notice.
The Bottom Line
For most users, turn off Record in the background while I’m playing a game under Gaming > Captures. If you also want the Win+G overlay gone, disable Xbox Game Bar under Gaming > Xbox Game Bar. Use the two per-user registry values only as a fallback, and uninstall the package only when you accept the recovery risks.
