For an always-on show, the overlay is the most reliable way to keep a brief note visible in the video. Pair it with a short URL on screen and, if useful, a pinned chat message linking to the full notes. Do not make a clickable chat link the only route: YouTube’s feature comparison lists links in chat and the channel description for horizontal streams, but not for vertical live feeds.
Build and add an on-video notes overlay
- Prepare the copy. Create a concise visual with the episode title, current segment or guest, and a short URL for the full notes. Treat it as a summary, not a transcript; long notes are easier to read on a separate page.
- Add it to the encoder scene. Add the graphic or a browser source to the scene feeding the YouTube stream. YouTube’s instructions for its break overlay say to create a Browser Source in the encoder and set its width and height to match the stream resolution. Using that source for podcast notes is a practical adaptation. Encoder support and controls vary, so check the instructions for the encoder you use. YouTube’s overlay guidance
- Preview before depending on it. Check the notes in Live Control Room, then confirm how they appear on the channel and public watch page, including on a mobile device. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring audio and video quality. YouTube live-streaming tips
- Make a failure plan. Decide who updates the notes, how changes are previewed before they go live, what viewers should see if the notes source fails, and who checks the presentation after a restart or encoder handoff. YouTube does not prescribe a 24/7 show-notes procedure, so treat these as operational decisions for your stream.
Use chat or a companion page as a second route
Pin a link in live chat
Post a brief message with the full-notes URL and pin it if you are the creator. Moderators and viewers cannot pin the message, and a pinned message is a chat aid—not a video overlay. Because link access differs between horizontal and vertical formats, retain the short URL or other instructions in the video when viewers may be watching vertically. Put notes and chat on a companion page
You can place the full notes alongside an embedded live chat on an external page. YouTube’s documented requirements include a matching embed and site domain, and its help page says the chat embed is not available on mobile web. Prepare and monitor an always-on stream
YouTube’s event guidance recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled start. It also advises checking the preview, verifying access on the channel and watch pages and on mobile devices, monitoring audio and video quality, and stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. For continuous operation, assign responsibility for note updates and decide how the overlay and its fallback will be checked after any restart or handoff. The cited YouTube guidance does not set out a particular method for running a stream continuously.

Troubleshoot common presentation problems
- The notes do not appear in the video: Check that the graphic or browser source is enabled in the scene feeding the stream. A chat post or pin does not become an on-video overlay.
- The overlay is cropped or difficult to read: Check the source dimensions against the stream resolution, then inspect the Live Control Room preview and the actual watch page, including on mobile.
- Viewers cannot follow the chat link: Do not rely on chat as the only route, particularly for vertical viewing. Keep a readable short URL or instructions in the video itself.
- The companion page’s chat does not load: Verify that the embed domain matches the site domain; viewers on mobile web cannot use YouTube’s embedded live chat.
- The notes go stale after a restart or update: Set an owner for edits and preview changes before publication. Plan who checks the notes source and fallback whenever the encoder or stream is handed off.
