Editing the YouTube live broadcast title only changes the overall event’s metadata; it does not automatically display each item being played. For a continuous stream, the title overlay must get its text from a source that can identify the current item, such as supported YouTube chapters or a playlist in the video description.
Choose which title you want viewers to see
“Current title” can mean either the title of the live broadcast on YouTube or the name of the content currently playing inside that broadcast. These require different changes.

Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation states: “The broadcast represents exactly one YouTube video.” Its title is broadcast-level metadata, not a label that changes for each segment. The API also distinguishes the broadcast viewers watch from the stream carrying the audio-video feed. Change the title of the overall live broadcast
If you only need to rename the event, edit the broadcast’s title through the applicable YouTube Studio workflow or update the broadcast metadata with the Live Streaming API. YouTube’s API lifecycle guidance allows broadcast metadata to be updated while a broadcast is active. That update does not render the name of each played video over the picture.

Show the changing title inside the stream
For a visible now-playing label, add a title source and an overlay layer in the software producing the stream. An OBS Project forum resource by Omegadev documents a community browser-source overlay that can use YouTube chapters and video-description playlists as title inputs. The resource’s stated last update is September 18, 2025. It is a community tool, not an official YouTube feature. OBS Project forum: now-playing overlay
- Choose an input the overlay supports. Use the documented chapter or video-description playlist approach if it matches how your continuous video is organized. Do not assume the overlay can identify arbitrary playback sources.
- Add the title source to the stream scene. In OBS, add the overlay as a browser source, then position and style it as a layer above the video. Configure the source according to its current documentation; exact installation and setup details can change.
- Check the text against the actual playback. Test the chapter or playlist input with the content format you will stream. Confirm that the displayed title changes at the right time, remains readable, and fits the scene.
- Check behavior during transitions and restarts. Continuous streams can loop or move between items. Confirm that the title source follows those changes rather than staying on the previous title. The documented approach does not establish universal compatibility or synchronization for every setup.
If the overlay does not update correctly, check that its input matches the format it supports and that the chapter or playlist entries correspond to the playback order. If your source is not one of the documented inputs, use a different title source that can reliably track that source; do not present an unverified setup as guaranteed.

Rights still apply to the audio and video
A title overlay identifies content; it does not grant permission to broadcast it. YouTube Help says live streams can be terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines strikes and describes Content ID claims on archived streams.
