Escape Simulator is available on Ubuntu through Steam; there is no separate official Ubuntu installer. Install Steam, download the game from your Library, and use Proton Hotfix if the Linux build does not run reliably. Pine Studio recommends Proton Hotfix for Linux players.
Can you play Escape Simulator on Ubuntu?
Yes. Steam lists Escape Simulator for SteamOS and Linux, and Steam is the official route to install and update it. The store page’s Linux listing and Pine Studio’s runtime guidance need a little context: the developer said it had stopped maintaining the native Linux build because Proton was more reliable for most Linux players, then later restored a native build as version 35497 while continuing to recommend Proton Hotfix. The practical guidance is to try the Steam installation and use Proton Hotfix if the native runtime fails or behaves poorly. See Pine Studio’s Linux-support announcements and the Steam listing.
Use a current Ubuntu release or Ubuntu LTS on a 64-bit x86 system. Valve’s Steam-for-Linux documentation specifies glibc 2.31 or newer as of August 15, 2025, and warns that older distributions, including Ubuntu 18.04, may be affected. Steam also needs 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers. Check Valve’s Steam-for-Linux requirements if you are using an older installation.
Ubuntu system requirements
These are the requirements shown in the game’s SteamOS + Linux listing, not a guarantee that every room will run smoothly:

Leave additional disk space for updates, shader caches, Workshop downloads, and any DLC. Pine Studio cautions that some community-made rooms can need substantially more memory and graphics capability than the base game. Eight gigabytes of RAM is a more comfortable practical target than the 4 GB minimum, especially for community rooms, but it is not the game’s official minimum.
Install Steam on Ubuntu
Canonical documents the Steam Snap as the straightforward Ubuntu option. Install it from App Center or use the terminal:

- Press the Super key and search for App Center.
- Open App Center, search for Steam, and select Install.

If you already use a traditional Steam installation or need a different library layout, Valve also documents installing its steam_latest.deb package through Ubuntu Software Center or gdebi. Get it from Valve’s official distribution source rather than an unverified mirror. The Snap and .deb routes have different library locations; Snap confinement can also complicate access to external drives in some setups. For a Linux library, an ext4 drive is generally a safer choice than removable NTFS storage, though a problem can also come from how a drive is mounted or permissioned.
Download and install Escape Simulator
- Launch Steam and sign in.
- Open the Steam store and search for Escape Simulator, or visit the official Steam listing.
- Buy the game if it is not already in your account.
- Open Library, select Escape Simulator, and click Install.
- Choose a library with at least the listed 18–19 GB free; allowing extra room is sensible.
- Wait for Steam to download and verify the files, then click Play.
The Steam store price is regional and can change with sales, taxes, and currency. The US base-game price was $19.99 when observed on August 18, 2026; check the store for the current price in your region. Avoid third-party “Ubuntu installers,” repacks, or unofficial game files: the legitimate distribution is through Steam.

Choose Proton Hotfix in Steam
Steam Play must be enabled for compatibility tools. In Steam, go to Steam > Settings > Steam Play and enable Enable Steam Play for supported titles. If needed, also enable Enable Steam Play for all other titles, then restart Steam if prompted. Canonical documents these options in its Steam Play and Proton guide.
To select the developer-recommended tool for this game:
- In Library, right-click Escape Simulator and choose Properties.
- Open Compatibility.
- Check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select Proton Hotfix and close Properties.
- Launch the game.
If Steam runs the native Linux build reliably, you can test it as well. Proton is not needed for a game running natively, but Pine Studio recommends Proton Hotfix for Linux and Steam Deck players; it is the sensible starting point when troubleshooting.

Native Linux or Proton: what is the difference?

The native-build history and current recommendation come from Pine Studio’s official announcements. Steam’s store metadata still lists Linux support, so the most precise summary is that Linux is listed, while the developer recommends Proton Hotfix for reliability.

Steam will not install
- Check whether Snap is available with
snap --version, then retrysnap install steam. - If Steam does not appear in App Center, use the terminal method above.
- If Ubuntu is old, move to a current supported Ubuntu release before attempting game-specific fixes.
- If using Valve’s .deb route, obtain
steam_latest.debfrom Valve’s official source.
The game cannot be installed or has no Play button
- Confirm that the Steam account owns the game.
- Enable Steam Play for all other titles under Steam > Settings > Steam Play, then restart Steam.
- In the game’s Properties > Compatibility, force Proton Hotfix.
- Check free space in the selected Steam library.
The game starts and immediately closes
- Restart Steam and use its installed-files verification option for the game.
- Force Proton Hotfix if it is not already selected.
- Update Ubuntu and the GPU driver, then restart the computer.
- Temporarily remove custom launch options.
- Test the default Steam library instead of an external drive.
- If Hotfix still fails, try a different Proton version before investigating logs or the compatibility prefix.
Valve’s Steam-for-Linux documentation gives sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall as an example for Ubuntu driver installation. Driver needs vary by Ubuntu release and GPU; ensure both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers are available. NVIDIA users should check that the intended proprietary driver is active where appropriate; AMD and Intel systems depend on current Mesa/Vulkan support.
Black screen, visual glitches, or poor performance
- Update the graphics driver and check that a hybrid laptop is using the intended GPU.
- Try Proton Hotfix, then test a windowed display mode or lower graphics settings.
- Remove overlays and custom launch options while diagnosing.
- Check whether the issue occurs in the base game or only in a particular Workshop room; some community rooms are more demanding.
Snap audio or external-drive issues
For missing voice chat or recording features, inspect the Snap connections with snap connections steam. If appropriate, add the audio connection with snap connect steam:audio-record. For a library on an external drive, confirm that the drive is mounted with usable permissions and that Steam can access its library folder; Snap access may be a factor, but is not the only possible cause.
Logs and compatibility-prefix resets
Do not delete the Proton prefix as an initial fix: it can remove local configuration and may affect saves. Back up relevant data, verify files, change Proton version, and test without launch options first. The game’s official FAQ discussion gives a log path under ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1435790/, but that location is not universal and can differ for Snap installations. Consult the official Escape Simulator FAQ discussion before using a path or resetting a prefix.
Co-op, Workshop rooms, and VR
Escape Simulator includes solo play, online co-op, a room editor, and community rooms. Steam lists built-in rooms as recommended for up to three players and says community rooms have been tested with up to ten. Network, voice-chat, or hosting problems are separate from installing the game; Steam’s listing also warns that some community rooms need more powerful hardware than the base requirements.
Steam marks the game as VR-supported, but VR adds SteamVR/OpenXR, headset, GPU, and Linux compatibility requirements beyond the standard desktop setup. Treat it as a separate configuration rather than assuming the ordinary Proton setup guarantees VR functionality.
