Yes—Overcooked! 2 is available on Steam with a Linux build, so you can install it on Ubuntu through the Steam client. Start with the default Linux version; if it will not launch or has controller or graphics problems, try Proton Experimental for this game.

What you need

  • A 64-bit Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS installation and an internet connection for Steam setup and downloads.
  • Current graphics drivers for your GPU, including the required 32-bit graphics-driver support. The correct driver depends on your hardware and Ubuntu release.
  • A Steam account and ownership of the game, or a code to redeem it.
  • Free storage. Steam lists 3 GB for the game, but leave additional room for Steam runtimes, shader caches, updates, and optional content.
  • For local co-op, compatible controllers that Steam recognizes.

The game’s Steam page lists Mint 18 / Ubuntu 16.04.01, an Intel i3-2100 or AMD A8-5600K processor, 4 GB RAM, and a GeForce 450GTS as minimum Linux requirements. These are the game’s older published requirements, not a recommendation to run an obsolete Ubuntu release. Valve’s current Steam for Linux documentation calls for 64-bit x86 Linux, current 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers, and glibc 2.31 or newer; it warns that Ubuntu 18.04 and older may no longer be supported. See Steam’s game listing and Valve’s Steam for Linux documentation.

Install Steam on Ubuntu

Ubuntu documents Steam installation through its App Center or with the Steam snap. For a straightforward setup, use the App Center or run:

sudo snap install steam

Ubuntu also documents these optional snap connections:

  • Overcooked! Play solo or engage in classic, chaotic couch co-op for up to four players in both co-operative and competitive challenge modes.
  • hold onto your aprons… it's time to save the world (again!)

  • includes the base game for both Overcooked! And Overcooked! 2
sudo snap connect steam:system-observe
sudo snap connect steam:hardware-observe
sudo snap connect steam:audio-record

The system-observe and hardware-observe connections can help with compatibility and hardware information. The audio-record connection is for features such as voice chat or recording; it is not needed just to launch the game. Installation details are in Ubuntu’s Steam installation guide.

Choose snap or Debian package

Consideration Steam snap Debian package
Installation App Center or a simple snap command Traditional package installation
Updates Automatic background updates Package updates or manual update steps
Isolation and files Confined; Steam data is under ~/snap/steam/ Unrestricted system access; traditional locations include ~/.steam and ~/.local/share/Steam
Tools and setup Includes tools such as MangoHud May require extra dependency and architecture setup; some tools may need separate installation
Potential snag Permissions or access to libraries on other drives can require attention More manual setup, but may suit existing conventional Steam libraries

Ubuntu says both packages provide the full Steam client and broadly support the same number of games. The snap is a sensible first choice for a simple Ubuntu installation; consider the Debian package if snap confinement causes library, permission, or integration problems. For the Debian route, follow Valve’s current instructions at Steam for Linux rather than relying on a fixed package-download address. Ubuntu’s comparison is at Snap versus deb.

Download and install Overcooked! 2

  1. Open Steam and sign in.
  2. Visit the official Steam page for Overcooked! 2. Purchase the game or redeem it if you already own it.
  3. Open Library and select Overcooked! 2.
  4. Click Install, choose a library location, and confirm.
  5. Wait for Steam to download the game and its required Linux runtime components, then click Play.

The base game is enough to install and play; the listed add-ons are optional. If an installation on an external or secondary drive fails to start, test the default Steam library drive before changing other settings.

Use the Linux build first; switch to Proton if needed

Steam lists a SteamOS + Linux version, so Proton is not a prerequisite. Let Steam use the default Linux version for your first launch. Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool for Windows games, but Ubuntu also documents forcing it for an individual game when a native version has trouble.

What happens What to try
The game launches and works as expected Keep the default Linux version.
The game will not launch or has graphics or input problems Try Proton Experimental for this title, then restart the game.
A controller is not detected Check Steam Input first; if the Linux version still has trouble, try Proton Experimental.
Launching from an external or secondary drive fails Test the default Steam library drive.
Snap permissions or library access are the obstacle Check the snap connections below, or consider the Debian package.

To change the compatibility tool: in Steam Library, right-click Overcooked! 2, choose Properties → Compatibility, check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and select Proton Experimental or another installed Proton version. Restart the game after changing the setting. You can return to the default Linux version by clearing the force-compatibility checkbox. Follow Ubuntu’s Proton configuration instructions.

Some community reports for this title say Proton Experimental works better than the Linux build for controller detection or other issues, but results depend on the system and software versions. Proton is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed improvement. ProtonDB reports for Overcooked! 2 are community-submitted and can change as game and Proton versions change.

Set up local and online co-op

Local co-op and controllers

The Steam listing advertises shared/split-screen co-op for up to four players. Before launching, connect or pair the controllers you plan to use. In Steam’s controller settings, confirm that each device is recognized; if not, try another USB port or redo Bluetooth pairing. Test the game’s default Linux version first, then try Proton Experimental if input still fails. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change helped.

Online co-op

Steam advertises online co-op and Remote Play Together. That does not establish that every Linux setup or platform combination will work identically. Check recent ProtonDB reports and current Steam discussions before relying on cross-platform play.

Troubleshoot a game that will not launch

  1. Restart Steam. If you recently installed driver or snap updates, restart Ubuntu too.
  2. In the game’s Steam properties, use the installed-files option to verify the game files.
  3. Try Proton Experimental using the per-game Compatibility setting above. If it creates a new problem, return to the default Linux version.
  4. If the game is on an external or secondary drive, install or move it to Steam’s default library and test again.
  5. If you installed Steam as a snap, connect the observation interfaces if they are not already connected:
    sudo snap connect steam:system-observe
    sudo snap connect steam:hardware-observe
  6. Check that Ubuntu and the correct GPU drivers are up to date, including 32-bit driver support. Avoid installing a guessed driver package: the correct choice depends on the GPU and Ubuntu release.
  7. Launch Steam from a terminal to see diagnostic output:
    snap run steam

To check snap package information, run snap info steam.

  8. For a game log, open the game’s Steam properties, add %command% > $HOME/game_log 2>&1 to its launch options, and launch it. For Steam snap, Ubuntu documents the resulting log at /home/$USER/snap/steam/common/game_log; snap Steam logs are also under ~/snap/steam/common/.local/share/Steam/logs.

Ubuntu’s broader Steam troubleshooting guide covers restarts, storage, snap connections, and Proton Experimental.

Sources and compatibility limits

Steam’s Linux listing and Ubuntu’s supported Steam installation route make the Steam edition the direct option for Ubuntu. Compatibility still depends on the machine’s GPU and drivers, Steam package, game build, controller, and—if selected—Proton version. The game’s listed storage requirement is not a guarantee that 3 GB will cover runtimes, caches, updates, or optional content. Avoid unofficial repacks or Windows installers when the Steam client provides the installation path.
