The project identifies the required base as “1636 Fire Red Squirrels.gba,” but does not provide the base game. You must obtain that base game lawfully yourself.
What you need
- The Radical Red .ups patch, obtained from the project’s PokéCommunity thread and its update posts.
- A clean Pokémon FireRed 1.0 base ROM identified by the project as “1636 Fire Red Squirrels.gba.” The thread does not supply this game; do not download it from unauthorized ROM sites.
- A patching tool that supports .ups files and a Game Boy Advance emulator or compatible hardware for playing the result.
How to patch Radical Red
- Open the official project thread. Locate its patch/download instructions and check the update posts for the version you intend to use.
- Prepare a clean FireRed 1.0 base ROM matching the project’s “1636 Fire Red Squirrels.gba” identification. Do not use a previously modified ROM.
- Apply the Radical Red .ups patch. The thread links an online patcher where you provide the base ROM and choose a Radical Red version. It also names Tsukuyomi or NUPS for Windows and UniPatcher for Android; the thread links an alternative patcher for mobile or Mac.
- Save the patched output as a .gba file. If patching fails, first check that the base ROM is the required clean version and that the patch and base file were selected in the correct fields.
- Open the resulting .gba file in a compatible emulator, or use compatible real hardware. The project lists mGBA or VBA for Windows, OpenEmu for Mac, myBoy for Android, and gba4iOS for iOS.
Set up saves before playing
Before starting a new game, enable Real Time Clock (RTC) in the emulator and set the save type to flash 128K, following the project’s troubleshooting guidance. If you already created a save with incorrect settings, the project warns that you may need to delete that save and restart after correcting the configuration.

Check the patch version before applying it
The project thread’s title advertises version 4.1, and thread starter soupercell announced “4.1 is out!” on March 22, 2024, directing players to the thread’s page 120. That announcement does not establish whether 4.1 is still the latest version on October 8, 2026. Check the project thread and the live patcher’s version selector immediately before patching. If version 4.1 does not appear in the patcher, the project thread suggests clearing the browser cache.
Emulator compatibility notes
The project thread says Radical Red does not work with Eclipse and lists PizzaBoy, Eclipse, and Twilight Menu as incompatible. It lists mGBA, VBA, OpenEmu, myBoy, and JohnGBA as tested to perform fine. Treat these as the project’s guidance, not a fresh compatibility test; emulator and device updates may affect current behavior. The thread also says real-hardware play is compatible but does not give model-specific setup instructions.
