Before you start: confirm the game has an upgrade
An upgrade is specific to a game, not a benefit that applies automatically to every PS4 or Xbox One title. PlayStation says only certain PS4 games can be upgraded to a digital PS5 version; the offer and its terms appear in the PlayStation Store. Xbox Smart Delivery applies to supported titles, and availability and enhancements vary by game and region. Check the live listing for your game before downloading.

Download a digital PS4 game upgrade on PS5
- Sign in on PS5 with the PlayStation account that owns the digital PS4 game.
- Search PlayStation Store for the PS5 version, or find the game through Search and open its game hub.
- Select the upgrade offer and review its terms, including the displayed price and any time limit.
- Select Download if the offer is free, or choose the purchase option shown if payment is required. Launch the PS5 version after it installs.
If you have both versions installed, open the game’s item in Game Library and use its options menu to choose which version to download or play. A PS4 game redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit is not eligible for an upgrade unless its listing says otherwise.
Download a disc-based PS4 game upgrade on PS5
- Check that the game has a PS5 upgrade offer and that your PS5 has a disc drive. PS4 discs cannot be used on PS5 Digital Edition.
- Sign in, insert the eligible PS4 disc, open the game’s hub, and select the upgrade offer.
- Review the terms, then select Download or the purchase option shown.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you play the digital PS5 version.
The disc’s country or region must match your PlayStation account’s region for the upgrade. If the offer is missing, check that match as well as the game’s eligibility and the account that owns it.

Get the Xbox Series X|S version with Smart Delivery
First confirm that the title supports Smart Delivery or that its publisher explicitly lists a Series X|S version or upgrade. Xbox describes Smart Delivery as providing the best available version for the Xbox console in use, with the upgraded version free when available for a supported title. Check the game’s listing and follow the console’s installation or update prompts; Xbox does not specify one universal manual menu sequence.
Smart Delivery does not mean every Xbox One game gets a Series X|S upgrade. The available version and enhancements depend on the title and region, so check the publisher’s game page if the expected version does not appear.

Playing a PS4 game is not the same as upgrading it
PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, though some games or features may have limitations. Backward compatibility lets you play a PS4 game; it does not guarantee that a separate PS5 edition exists or that the edition is free. For disc games, the PS4 disc must be usable in the console: PS4 discs do not work on PS5 Digital Edition.

Troubleshoot a missing or incorrect version
- No PS5 upgrade offer: Confirm the specific game is eligible, you are signed in to the account that owns the digital game, and the console is online. For a disc, verify that the PS5 has a drive and that the disc and account regions match. PlayStation does not promise upgrades for every title.
- The PS4 version launches instead: If both versions are available, use the Game Library item’s options menu to select which version to download or play.
- A disc will not install on PS5 Digital Edition: This is a hardware limitation, not a download issue. A disc-based game requires a console with a disc drive.
- The Xbox version or enhancements differ from what you expected: Smart Delivery is limited to supported titles, and enhancements vary. Check the publisher’s listing and regional availability.
