You can use your phone to tell Steam to install a game on your PC, but the game files download to the computer—not to the phone. The PC must be powered on, connected to the internet, and running Steam while signed in to the same account. Steam supports remote downloads through its mobile app or a phone browser.
If you want to play a PC game on your phone instead, use Steam Link: it streams a game already installed on your computer rather than installing it on your phone.

Remote download or Steam Link?

- A PC or Mac with Steam installed, powered on, connected to the internet, and signed in to the account you will use on your phone. Steam says to leave the Steam application running for Remote Downloads.
- A phone with internet access and either a mobile browser or the official Steam Mobile app, signed in to the same Steam account.
- The game in that account’s Steam library, a working Steam library location on the computer, and enough free space on its destination drive.
- The computer awake for the download. Sleep, hibernation, shutdown, a lost connection, a closed Steam client, or a disconnected destination drive can prevent a command from being received or interrupt the download.
The phone and computer do not generally need to share a Wi-Fi network: this is remote account-based management. Both still need working internet access, and network restrictions or an unavailable Steam session can get in the way. Steam recommends using Remote Downloads only on a private, secured computer—not a public or shared machine where someone else could access your signed-in account.

Method 1: Start the download from a phone browser
This is the clearest documented route and a useful fallback if the app’s layout differs from what you expect.
Prepare the computer
- Open Steam and sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Leave Steam running. Keep the computer powered on and prevent it from sleeping during the expected download period.
- Check that the intended Steam library drive is connected and has enough free space. If you are leaving a laptop, plug it into power.
Use Steam on your phone
- In your phone’s browser, open store.steampowered.com and sign in to the same account as the PC.
- Open your profile/persona menu and choose Activity.
- Choose Games, then All Games.
- Find the game and tap or click Install.
- Refresh the page later to check its installation state.
Those are the steps Steam lists in its official Remote Downloads instructions. The command tells the Steam client on the computer to download the game to a configured library. The phone does not receive the PC game files.

Method 2: Use the Steam Mobile app
- Install the official Steam Mobile app from Steam’s mobile page or your device’s official app store.
- Sign in to the same Steam account that is active on the computer.
- Open the app’s Library or game-library area, select the game, and use its Install or remote-download control. If Steam offers a choice of computers, select the intended one.
- Check the game’s status in the app, or verify the download in Steam on the computer.
Steam lists library access and remote downloads as Steam Mobile features. The app’s navigation labels can change between versions, so the exact location or wording of a control may differ. The Steam Mobile page currently lists iOS 15.1 or later and Android 7.0 or later; check the page for current requirements before installing.

On the PC, open Steam’s Downloads view to see whether the game has started, is queued, or is paused. When using the phone browser, refresh the library page to update its status. The library list reflects the installation state on the computer where the Steam client is logged in, according to Steam’s support instructions.

If you use more than one computer, check which one is active before sending the command. Give your computers distinguishable names where Steam allows it, and do not assume every Steam version will show the same device-selection screen. If the wrong machine appears to have received the command—or the status is unclear—check Steam locally on the intended PC.
If remote installation does not work

| The download starts, then stops | Check for sleep or hibernation, power loss, an interrupted connection, insufficient storage, or a disconnected library drive. Resume the download in Steam on the PC and keep the computer awake and powered. |
| The game will not install to its library | Check the free space and destination drive on the PC. An external drive that is disconnected or a library location that is unavailable can block installation. Open Steam locally and start the install there to inspect the available library choices; resume or restart the download from the computer if needed. |
| The phone shows an old status | Refresh the browser page or reopen the app, then check the Downloads view on the PC. Steam’s browser instructions specifically say to refresh to check installation state. |

If the remote control remains unavailable, open Steam on the computer and install the game locally. Remote installation does not override ownership, region, age, or licensing restrictions. DLC may depend on the base game and may not appear as a separate install target. Some games also need a separate launcher, publisher sign-in, updates, or first-run components such as runtimes or anti-cheat software, so a completed download does not guarantee that the game is ready to launch without further setup.

Want to play on your phone?
Install Steam Link, connect it to the computer running Steam, and stream a game that is already installed there. The PC runs the game; the phone receives the video and audio and sends your input back. Steam Link does not remotely install a game or run the PC version independently on the phone. Use only official Steam or Valve pages and your device’s official app store. Do not enter your password or Steam Guard code on a lookalike site, share an authenticator code, or install software advertised as a Steam fix, optimizer, or account-recovery tool. Because remote downloads require a signed-in computer, use the feature only on a private computer you control—not a public, school, work, or otherwise shared machine.
