The easiest way to use X-ray in Minecraft: Java Edition is to install a resource pack: download its version-matched .zip, put it in Minecraft’s resource-pack folder, then activate it in Options. An X-ray mod is a separate option and requires a matching mod loader and .jar. Use either only in single-player or where the server owner explicitly allows it; X-ray can break multiplayer rules and lead to a ban.
Before you download X-ray
First confirm that you are playing Java Edition on a desktop. The Java and Bedrock editions use different add-on formats and installation steps; the instructions here are not for Bedrock, consoles, or mobile. Minecraft’s official download page provides the Java Edition launcher.

“X-ray” is not a built-in vanilla feature. It usually means one of three things:

.zipand usually needs no mod loader. - A mod changes the game or rendering behavior and may offer a toggle or configuration. It is commonly a
.jarand requires the specific mod loader it was made for. - A datapack is installed in a world and uses Minecraft’s data and command systems; it is not installed like a resource pack or a mod.
A hack client is not necessary for a basic X-ray setup. Avoid it: it bundles extra functionality and adds security and server-rule risks.

Check your exact Minecraft version before choosing a download. In the Minecraft Launcher, look at the installation selected beside Play and note its version—for example, 26.1.2, 1.21.11, or another release. Pick a file that specifically lists your version or a compatibility range confirmed by the project. The newest download is not automatically the right one: mods must also match the loader. Fabric’s installation guide explains the edition, game-version, loader, and dependency checks.
Download from the project’s own page, CurseForge, Modrinth, or a creator repository the project itself identifies. Check the project name, author, supported versions, and file details. Do not run an .exe or .msi presented as an X-ray resource pack, and avoid fake download buttons, password-protected archives, and reuploads without a clear project history. A reputable host is not a guarantee that every file is risk-free.

For example, the Xray Ultimate CurseForge page lists files for 26.1.2 and 26.2 as of the dates shown on that page. Those are examples, not a recommendation to use either version regardless of your installation.

Install an X-ray resource pack (the simplest method)
A resource pack is the best starting point for a beginner who wants a simple single-player setup. The official Minecraft texture-pack instructions use the same basic process: download a ZIP, open the resource-pack folder from the game, and activate the pack in the list (Minecraft’s guide).

- Download the resource-pack
.zipfrom the project page, choosing a file compatible with your Minecraft version. - Do not extract it unless the creator’s instructions say to. If the download is a larger archive containing another resource-pack ZIP, extract the outer archive and use the inner pack ZIP.
- Start Minecraft Java Edition and, from the main menu, select Options → Resource Packs → Open Pack Folder.
- Copy or move the pack ZIP into the folder that opens. Close the folder and return to Minecraft.
- Under Available Resource Packs, select the pack’s arrow or double-click it to move it to Selected Resource Packs.
- Select Done and wait for the resources to reload. Test it in a disposable world before relying on it in an important save.
The visual effect depends on the pack. Common blocks such as stone or deepslate may become transparent while ores remain visible or emphasized. Results can vary around liquids, lava, bright areas, and other blocks. Do not assume every pack reveals every ore or works with every graphics setup; follow that project’s own notes.
Turn the resource pack off or remove it
Return to Options → Resource Packs, move the X-ray pack from Selected Resource Packs back to Available Resource Packs, and select Done. To remove the download entirely, close Minecraft and delete its ZIP from the resource-pack folder. Disabling a pack changes only what you see; it does not undo items already collected in the world.

Install an X-ray mod instead
Choose a mod only if you want its specific toggle or configuration and are comfortable managing a modded installation. A mod’s .jar must match your Minecraft version and its loader—Fabric, Forge, Quilt, or NeoForge. A Fabric mod will not load in a Forge profile, for example.

- Install the stated loader from its official project site. If the mod requires a dependency such as Fabric API, download the compatible dependency too.
- Download the matching X-ray mod
.jarfrom the project’s official CurseForge or Modrinth page. - Open the Minecraft directory used by the installation or launcher instance. Put the mod and required dependency files in its
modsfolder; create the folder if needed. - In the Minecraft Launcher, select the profile for the same loader and game version, then launch it.
- Check the title screen or the loader’s mod list, if available. In a test world, use the mod’s documented keybind or configuration to activate it.
Common default Minecraft directories are %APPDATA%.minecraft on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft on macOS, and ~/.minecraft on Linux. A custom launcher may store each instance elsewhere, so use that launcher’s instance folder rather than assuming the default. A current example, X-RAY Java Edition on CurseForge, lists loader-specific files for Forge, Fabric, Quilt, and NeoForge; its listed file for one loader is not interchangeable with another’s.

Troubleshooting
The resource pack is not listed
- Make sure it is a Java resource-pack ZIP, not a Bedrock
.mcpackor.mcaddon. - Check that the actual pack ZIP—not a folder containing it or an outer archive—is in the exact folder opened with Open Pack Folder.
- Restart Minecraft and check again. If the download page produced an error page renamed as ZIP, download again from the project’s file listing.
The pack is listed but has no effect
- Confirm you selected it, and check the project’s version notes and any required settings.
- Temporarily disable other resource packs or move the X-ray pack above packs that might override its textures.
- Reload the pack or restart, then test in a new creative world. Packs can differ in what they make visible.
Minecraft shows an incompatible-pack warning
The warning means the pack declares a resource-pack format different from the game’s expected format. It is a compatibility signal, not proof that the file is safe or unsafe. Prefer a file listed for your exact game version; do not dismiss the warning as a guarantee that the pack will work.
The mod is in mods but does nothing—or the game crashes
- Confirm you launched the correct loader profile and that the mod’s loader and Minecraft version match it.
- Install any required dependencies for the same game version and loader. Check the project page for a keybind or configuration step.
- If the game crashes, remove the most recently added mod and launch again. Test with only the loader, required dependency, and X-ray mod; check the first
Caused by:section in the crash report. - Launch the normal vanilla profile to confirm the base game still starts. Do not open an important world in a setup that is still crashing or unverified.
Back up important saves before testing mods or experimental versions, and try new setups in a disposable world. Minecraft’s snapshot guidance warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds and recommends backups or a separate folder; the same caution is useful when experimenting with mod combinations.
Can you use X-ray on a server or Realm?
Ask the owner or administrator before using X-ray on a private server or Realm, and follow the applicable rules. Public servers commonly treat X-ray as an unfair advantage; use may be detected, punished, or result in a ban. A resource pack and a client mod can be treated differently by a server, but neither is guaranteed to be permitted or undetectable. Do not use X-ray to evade server rules or anti-cheat systems.

If your goal is finding resources without seeing through terrain, explore caves, use Night Vision to see more clearly in dark areas, or mine at appropriate levels using vanilla mechanics. For learning world generation or debugging a build in your own world, use Creative or Spectator mode. An ore-highlight pack may improve visibility without making all terrain transparent, but check its behavior and server rules first.
