On an Xbox 360, downloading your Xbox Live profile restores it to the console from Xbox services: open the Guide, choose Download Profile, and sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your gamertag. On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, add or sign in to that Microsoft account instead; those consoles do not normally use the Xbox 360 download-profile flow.
“Xbox Live profile” is an older, still familiar name for an Xbox profile. The profile is associated with a Microsoft account, and the gamertag is its public Xbox identity. This is a console sign-in process, not a website download. Microsoft explains how a Microsoft account is used with Xbox and its other services.
Before you start
Make sure you are using the right console instructions and can access the Microsoft account that owns the gamertag. You will generally need:

- An internet connection on the console.
- The account’s email address, phone number, or Skype name. It may be an older address you no longer use as your main email.
- The account password and access to any security method Microsoft requests.
- Enough available console storage to save the profile.
A gamertag by itself is not a sign-in credential. If you have more than one Microsoft account, check that you have the one associated with the profile you want. Microsoft’s sign-in guidance covers account identifiers and signing in.

Download your profile on Xbox 360
- Turn on the Xbox 360 and connect it to the internet.
- Press the Xbox Guide button on the controller.
- Choose Download Profile.
- Enter the email address or other sign-in identifier for the Microsoft account linked to the Xbox profile.
- Enter the account password, or follow the applicable verification steps.
- Choose the storage device where the profile should be saved.
- Wait for the download to finish, then sign in and confirm that the displayed gamertag is the one you intended to use.
Menu wording can vary by dashboard version, language, region, and whether another profile is signed in. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 instructions for adding or removing a profile are the reference for the current supported flow. An Xbox 360 profile can be stored locally for offline play, but online services require a working network connection and the appropriate account sign-in.
Add your account on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
These consoles normally use an account-add or sign-in flow, not the Xbox 360-style Download Profile option. Menu labels may shift with dashboard updates.
- Open Profile & system.
- Choose Add or switch, then Add new.
- Enter the email address, phone number, or Skype name for the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile.
- Enter the password and complete any security prompts.
- Select the resulting gamertag and verify that it is the intended account.
If your console displays different labels, use its account or profile sign-in area and follow the on-screen prompts. Do not create a new account simply because you cannot find the old profile; a new account will not automatically include the old gamertag or account history.

If the profile will not download or sign in
“Download Profile” is missing
- Sign out of the active profile, then return to the Guide or profile-selection screen and look for Download Profile or Sign In.
- Check the console’s storage settings to see whether the profile is already present.
- Confirm that the console is online; if the menu or sign-in screen is not loading, restart the console and router.
Do not delete a stored profile just to make the option appear. If removal is eventually needed, distinguish deleting the profile only from deleting it together with locally stored items.
Your password is forgotten or rejected
Reset the Microsoft account password through Microsoft rather than guessing repeatedly. Select Forgot password? or open the Microsoft password-reset process, enter the account username, choose an available verification method, enter the code, and set a new password. Then retry the console sign-in. Verification options depend on the account. If normal sign-in still fails, use Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.
Two-step verification blocks an Xbox 360 sign-in
If two-step verification is enabled and the Xbox 360 cannot complete the modern verification flow, Microsoft says an app password may be needed. It is a compatibility workaround for that older device—not a way to recover an unknown account or password.

- Open the Microsoft account security dashboard and find App passwords under advanced security options.
- Generate an app password for your own account.
- On the Xbox 360, enter your Microsoft account email or username and use the generated app password where the console asks for the password.
Follow Microsoft’s app-password guidance. Never share an app password, regular password, or verification code with anyone claiming to provide Xbox support.
You do not know which email address owns the gamertag
Try account identifiers you previously used with Xbox, including older Microsoft account aliases or a phone number on the account. Check saved browser or password-manager credentials, old Xbox or Microsoft purchase receipts, and ask a family organizer which account was used. Microsoft’s sign-in helper guidance can help identify the next recovery route.
If you submit Microsoft’s account recovery form, provide accurate information; Microsoft may ask for details such as the hardware ID of a console you used frequently. Microsoft says unsuccessful recovery attempts may be limited to two per day, so prepare carefully and consult its guidance for an unsuccessful recovery request. A new Microsoft account will not automatically restore the old gamertag, achievements, purchases, subscriptions, or cloud saves.

The console reports a network or service problem
- Test the console’s network connection and restart the console and router.
- Check whether Xbox services are experiencing an outage and retry later if the problem is service-side.
- Check the console’s date, time, and region settings if authentication behaves unusually.
- Use the complete error message or error code to find the relevant support instructions. Avoid applying a fix for a different code based on a vague “profile won’t download” symptom.
If you suspect the account is temporarily locked, stop repeated password attempts and use Microsoft’s sign-in or recovery process.
The profile is already on another console
You can sign in with the same Microsoft account on another console; entering the public gamertag alone does not transfer the identity. If you see a simultaneous-use or sign-in conflict, consult Xbox’s guidance for a gamertag signed in on another console.
Downloading the profile does not guarantee that every save from the first console is available on the second. A save may remain on local storage or depend on cloud synchronization and the game’s account conditions. Digital purchases and subscriptions are associated with the Microsoft account, but access can also depend on licensing, console settings, and subscription status.

The local profile appears corrupted
Only consider removing a local profile after confirming that you know the Microsoft account credentials. In Xbox 360 storage settings, choose the profile and select Delete, then choose Delete Profile Only. Do not choose the option that deletes the profile and items unless you intend to remove associated local content. Restart the console and download the profile again. Check local storage and cloud synchronization separately for saves; re-downloading a profile does not promise to restore every save.
The Microsoft account was closed or may have been deleted
If the underlying Microsoft account was closed, follow Microsoft’s account reopening guidance. Microsoft describes a 30- or 60-day reopening period, depending on the circumstances. Microsoft also says an account inactive for more than two years may have been deleted; that does not mean every such account was automatically deleted, and recovery is not guaranteed. If the account is permanently unavailable, downloading its Xbox profile may not be possible.

Protect your profile and saved data
- Use the existing account and recovery process before creating a replacement.
- Do not delete saved games or other local items when you only mean to remove a profile copy.
- On a borrowed or shared console, remove your local profile when finished if you do not want it left available to other users.
- Never disclose your password, app password, recovery code, or verification code to another person.
