There is no single safe, universal way to dump PlayStation 2 security-chip firmware. First identify the console’s exact MechaCon chip and version, then use only the documented method that supports that chip family and layout. Both documented paths can alter console state; preserve the initial captures and recovery files, and complete the project’s restoration procedure before returning the console to normal use.
What the MechaCon does—and what a firmware dump can tell you
MechaCon, short for mechanics controller, primarily controls optical-drive mechanics. Technical references also describe security-related functions involving disc security, MagicGate and KELF decryption. Those functions make the chip relevant to security research, but obtaining a ROM image does not by itself explain what its bytes do. The PS2 Developer Wiki’s MechaCon reference describes the chip and its roles.
Keep two tasks separate: acquiring the data and interpreting it. The cited dumper documentation establishes acquisition and recovery procedures, not a universal method for analyzing every image or proving the security significance of a byte difference.
Identify the console and chip before choosing a dumper
Record the SCPH console model and, if known, its chassis or board identity. Then record the full MechaCon model and version—not just a family name such as “SPC970.” PS2Ident can collect console ROM and MechaCon NVRAM dumps along with hardware-identification data. Its documentation cautions that the model identification may be incomplete or inaccurate even when chip and version IDs read from hardware are accurate. Keep the full identification output and consult the PS2Ident documentation.

Do not infer compatibility from a similar console model. The Dragon and SPC970 methods use different tools and support boundaries; for SPC970, the documented layouts are keyed to observed configuration bytes, not merely the console’s model or the displayed chip/version string.

Dragon systems: follow MechaDump’s hook and restoration sequence
MechaDump documents two hook options. Its README characterizes the disc-protection hook as the safer option, but it requires a legitimate regional disc and a working drive. The IRQ hook has broader prerequisites but is described by the project as more dangerous. That is the project’s assessment, not proof that either option is risk-free.
The documented ROM-dump procedure installs a hook and then requires fully removing power so the MechaCon reloads the patch state. After the dump, MechaDump’s sequence restores EEPROM and automatically powers the system down. Follow the current project README exactly; do not improvise if a run fails or is interrupted. The project warns that a failure may brick the console and could require soldering and a Raspberry Pi for recovery.

Do not leave the console in the documented back-door state: MechaDump says that state disables factory patches and may cause reliability problems. Complete its EEPROM restoration and follow its stated shutdown behavior before using the system normally.
SPC970 systems: preserve the session and avoid interruption
Use SPC970-MechaLIBerator only when the observed configuration matches a layout the project documents. Its supported layouts cover specific configurations; an unlisted variant is not established as compatible simply because its console model looks similar.

- Remove any disc, close the tray and allow the drive to stop.
- Attach writable USB storage and run the homebrew application using the project’s current instructions.
- Complete and preserve the initial capture before proceeding. The project says it includes a full 1,024-byte NVRAM image, a raw configuration window, capture details and CRC32 values.
- Follow the on-screen write confirmation and wait for the operation to finish. Do not reset the console, remove the storage or cut power while an operation is active.
- Keep the complete
SPC970/directory, including numbered captures, baselines and verified chunk records. The project relies on these session and recovery artifacts; do not separate or delete them. - Use the project’s documented NVRAM restore or recovery flow, retaining the verification artifacts it creates.
The README warns that writes can corrupt console data or leave the PS2 unable to operate normally if the hardware is unsupported or an operation is interrupted or affected by storage/software failure. It also says that handling of some power-loss, interrupted USB-write and USB-capacity failures still needs confirmation on real hardware. Writable USB storage is required; the project does not specify a required capacity or guarantee particular drive models.

- Keep the original ROM image and NVRAM captures unchanged. Work from copies if you need to parse or compare data.
- Store the console model, chassis or board details if known, full MechaCon model and version, tool version, capture details and CRC32 values alongside the files.
- For SPC970 sessions, retain the entire project-created directory so recovery information stays with the capture it belongs to.
- Compare images only when the chip identities and acquisition methods are known. A difference between dumps does not, by itself, prove a particular security behavior.
PS2Ident’s identification output can help associate captures with hardware, while the dumper documentation primarily describes acquisition and recovery. The cited sources do not establish a universal firmware-analysis recipe.
