You no longer generally need to jailbreak an iPhone to emulate classic Nintendo or Sega systems. For Nintendo-only gaming, start with Delta. For Nintendo and Sega in one app, RetroArch is the most practical choice. For broader coverage—including Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, and additional Nintendo platforms—consider Provenance.
The emulator is only the software that reproduces a console. It does not automatically provide copyrighted games. You must import compatible game files and any required BIOS files from lawful sources, subject to your country’s law and the original software’s license terms.
Which iPhone emulator should you use?

This is a feature-and-setup comparison, not a performance benchmark. Compatibility depends on the game, file format, emulator core, iPhone hardware, iOS version, and—on some systems—the correct BIOS.
Delta: the easiest Nintendo option
Delta’s documented Nintendo support includes NES/Famicom, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS. It is the best default for readers who mainly want Nintendo games and do not need Sega as a primary use case. Check the official guide and current App Store listing because features and regional availability can change.

Do not treat Delta as the universal Sega solution. Sega support described in developer or beta material should not be assumed to be part of the stable App Store feature set.
RetroArch: the best single app for Nintendo and Sega
RetroArch uses separate emulator engines called cores. Its U.S. App Store listing currently identifies cores for NES/Famicom, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Sega Master System, Game Gear, Genesis/Mega Drive, Sega CD, Sega 32X, and Sega Saturn.
It also lists save states, rewind, fast-forward, controller remapping, shaders, cheats, netplay, and RetroAchievements. The trade-off is complexity: you may need to select a core, configure directories, manage playlists, and change settings per system or game.

Provenance: the broad enthusiast option
Provenance’s project documentation lists Nintendo systems such as NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, DS, 3DS, and GameCube, plus Sega Genesis, Game Gear, Sega CD, Saturn, and Dreamcast. Treat advertised support as a starting point rather than a guarantee that every game works perfectly: stable and experimental support, required BIOS files, and performance can differ between releases.
What emulation terms mean
- Emulator: Software that reproduces the behavior of a console.
- ROM or game image: A digital copy of cartridge or other game media. Disc-based systems commonly use ISO, BIN/CUE, CHD, or related formats.
- BIOS: Console firmware required by some systems or emulator cores.
- Core: The individual emulator engine used by RetroArch or another frontend.
- In-game save: A save created by the game itself.
- Save state: A snapshot of the emulator’s entire current state. It is convenient but can be less portable between apps, cores, or revisions of a game file.
Do you need to jailbreak your iPhone?
No. Apple’s App Review Guidelines permit retro console and PC emulator apps under specified rules. Delta and RetroArch are available through the App Store in supported markets, so App Store installation is the simplest route for most users.
Apple’s policy does not make copyrighted ROM distribution lawful. Developers remain responsible for the software and content their apps offer, and local copyright law still applies.
App Store installation
- Open the App Store.
- Search for the exact app name: Delta – Game Emulator, RetroArch, or Provenance.
- Confirm the developer and compare the listing with the emulator’s official website or documentation.
- Install the app and open it once.
- Pair a controller now if you plan to use one.
- Import a legally obtained game file through the app’s import command or the iOS Files share sheet.
App names and availability vary by country. The live App Store listing in your region is the authoritative check.

Alternative distribution and sideloading
Sideloading is an alternative, not the default requirement. AltStore Classic is a worldwide computer-assisted route; its documentation says sideloaded apps require periodic refreshing, typically every seven days, and that users are limited to three installed apps at a time. AltStore PAL is a separate alternative marketplace for supported users in the EU, Japan, and Brazil. Its apps do not expire and do not require a computer, but PAL does not support just-in-time compilation.
Use official distribution channels and avoid configuration profiles or downloads that request unnecessary device access.
Get game files legally
This guide does not link to ROM-index websites or “all games included” packs. Safer sources include officially authorized releases, homebrew, public-domain or openly licensed software, and files dumped from media where that activity is permitted by your jurisdiction and the relevant license.
Do not assume that owning a cartridge automatically makes downloading an Internet copy legal everywhere. The U.S. Copyright Office describes a limited archival-copy privilege for lawfully owned computer programs under particular conditions, but says it does not authorize selling or publicly distributing backup copies. It also recommends checking the original software’s terms. Readers outside the United States should consult local law.

Import a game on your iPhone
Using Files
- Copy the legally obtained game file into the Files app, such as On My iPhone or iCloud Drive.
- Open Delta, RetroArch, or Provenance.
- Choose Import, Open, Add Game, or the equivalent command.
- Select the file.
- Wait for the emulator to scan it, then tap the new library entry to launch it.
Using AirDrop or the share sheet
On a Mac or another Apple device, choose the game file, select Share → AirDrop, choose the iPhone, and select the emulator when iOS asks which app should open it. Provenance also documents importing through AirDrop and Files in its FAQ.
ZIP archives and multi-file games
Some apps and cores can read compressed files, but ZIP support varies. If a game does not appear or will not boot:

- Extract the ZIP in Files.
- Import the actual game file.
- Keep all files belonging to a multi-disc game together.
- For disc games, preserve the relationship between the cue sheet and its track files.
- Avoid renaming files unless the emulator’s documentation requires it.
Delta’s release notes mention changes to checksum verification for zipped games, so behavior can change after an update.
BIOS requirements: what to expect
There is no universal BIOS rule. Requirements depend on the system, emulator, core, region, and version.
- NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Genesis, Master System, and Game Gear: Many modern cores can run common games without a separate BIOS, but confirm the selected app and core.
- Nintendo DS: BIOS and firmware requirements depend on the emulator version. Delta’s recent melonDS notes indicate that BIOS files became optional for that implementation, so older guides may be obsolete.
- Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, and some other disc or computer systems: A BIOS is more likely to be required or strongly recommended.
In RetroArch, inspect the selected core’s information and system-directory instructions. In Provenance, check the current core or system documentation. Do not copy a generic BIOS folder path from an old guide: exact filenames, locations, and checksums can differ.
Setting up Nintendo games
NES and SNES
These cartridge-based systems are usually among the simplest to import. Delta is the easiest route; RetroArch gives you more core and display options. Landscape mode provides more room for SNES buttons, while a controller is preferable for action games.
Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance
Portrait mode works well for Game Boy-style games, especially turn-based RPGs and puzzles. Choose an appropriate handheld skin, adjust button size and opacity, and use a controller for fast platforming or fighting games.
Nintendo 64
N64 games often expose the limitations of touchscreen controls because they use an unusual analog stick and several simultaneous buttons. Use a physical controller if possible, then inspect the emulator’s mapping screen and adjust the analog stick, triggers, and C-buttons.
Nintendo DS
DS emulation requires two screens and may require touch, microphone, or dual-screen behavior. Try portrait and landscape layouts, swap the primary and secondary screens if the app supports it, and use a finger or stylus for touch input. A controller can help with movement, but it does not replace touch controls in every DS game.

Setting up Sega games
Master System, Game Gear, and Genesis/Mega Drive
These cartridge-based systems are generally simpler than Sega’s disc-based platforms. RetroArch is the clearest App Store choice when Sega is central to your collection. Select the appropriate core, import the game, and confirm the regional version if the game behaves unexpectedly.
Sega CD
Sega CD commonly requires more preparation than Genesis. You may need a compatible BIOS, a correctly structured disc image, and a cue sheet that points to the right track files. Keep related files together and follow the exact instructions for the selected core.
Sega 32X and Saturn
32X and Saturn support is more core-dependent than basic cartridge systems. A game may require a particular core, BIOS, region match, or stronger iPhone hardware. Saturn performance and compatibility can vary substantially by core and device.
Dreamcast
Provenance’s documentation lists Dreamcast among its broader supported platforms. Check the current release, required BIOS files, supported disc-image formats, and device requirements before importing a collection. “Supports Dreamcast” does not mean every title is guaranteed to boot or run correctly.

Touch controls are fine for turn-based games, RPGs, puzzles, and slower platformers. They are much less comfortable for precision platformers, fighting games, racing games, and many N64 titles.
- Use portrait mode for compact handheld layouts.
- Use landscape mode for NES, SNES, Genesis, and N64.
- Choose a skin with the correct button arrangement.
- Adjust button size and opacity where supported.
- Use per-game or per-core remapping for unusual layouts.
Apple supports compatible MFi and Bluetooth controllers through its game-controller framework. Delta’s listing specifically names Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Switch Pro, Nintendo Switch Online, MFi, and wired or Bluetooth keyboards. - Open Settings → Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- Tap the controller’s name.
- Open the emulator and confirm the button mapping.
- Remap controls if the profile is incorrect.
If it is not detected, disconnect it from another console or device, charge it, remove it from Bluetooth and pair it again, then test it in iOS or another game. Wired play works only when both the controller and the iPhone’s connector or adapter support it.

Save games without losing progress
Use the game’s own save system whenever possible. Treat save states as convenience copies, not your only backup.
- Create multiple save-state slots before major events.
- Do not load an old save state after changing cores or replacing the game file.
- Export or back up important saves before deleting or reinstalling an app.
- Do not assume iCloud synchronizes ROMs, BIOS files, save states, and in-game saves in the same way.
- Check the app’s current save-management and synchronization settings.
Delta supports save states from its pause menu. Provenance advertises save states and iCloud synchronization features, but exact behavior can depend on the current release and account or feature tier.
Troubleshooting
The game does not appear after import
- Extract the archive and import the uncompressed file.
- Confirm that the file format and selected system are supported.
- Keep multi-file or multi-disc content together.
- Try opening the file through the iOS share sheet.
- Check whether the file is a valid dump and whether the emulator recognizes its filename.
- Test with a known-compatible homebrew or public-domain title.
The game launches but crashes
Update the app, try another compatible core in RetroArch, disable cheats, patches, shaders, or run-ahead options, and verify any required BIOS. If the problem persists, test the same file in another supported emulator and report the system, game region, file format, iOS version, and emulator version through the project’s official support channel.

There is a black screen or a Sega CD/Saturn boot error
Check the BIOS requirement, exact filename, system directory, region match, and cue-sheet paths. Disc images may contain multiple files, and a cue sheet pointing to a renamed or missing track will fail. Avoid applying a universal BIOS instruction without identifying the specific core.
DS controls or touch input do not work
Change the screen layout, swap the main and secondary screens if available, use a finger or stylus, and map a controller input to touch when the emulator supports it. Some games depend on microphone or other DS-specific hardware.
Saves disappeared
Check the emulator’s save-management screen and the Files app for exported saves. Possible causes include deleting the app, changing the ROM filename or path, switching cores, a sync conflict, or an iCloud restore failure. Restore from an available iPhone or iCloud backup, and do not delete the app again until important saves have been exported.
The App Store shows a suspicious clone
Verify the developer and reach the listing through the emulator’s official website or documentation. Avoid apps promising huge copyrighted game libraries, “ROM packs,” unnecessary configuration profiles, or access to device data unrelated to emulation. Apple’s emulator policy does not guarantee that every app using the word “emulator” is trustworthy.

Final recommendations
Most Nintendo players should start with Delta. Choose RetroArch when Nintendo and Sega must live in one app or when advanced settings matter. Choose Provenance when broad enthusiast coverage—including Sega CD, Saturn, Dreamcast, or additional Nintendo platforms—is more important than the simplest setup.
Whichever app you choose, use a lawful game source, verify BIOS requirements for the exact core, pair a real controller for demanding games, and back up important saves before changing apps or files.
