Fortnite 2FA is enabled on the Epic Games account linked to your game—not in Fortnite’s PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, or mobile settings. Sign in at Epic, open Account → Password & Security, choose Set up under Two-Factor Authentication, complete the code or approval prompt, and save your backup codes. Epic requires 2FA for Fortnite gifting and competitive-event participation, although events can have additional rules.
Before you begin
- Identify the right Epic account. A console login can be linked to an Epic account different from the one you expect. Check the account name and linked accounts before changing security settings.
- Sign in successfully. You need access to the Epic account and its current password.
- Verify the account email. Epic’s Fortnite security guidance says the associated email must be verified before enabling MFA. See Epic’s account-security guidance.
- Prepare your verification channel. Have the email inbox, phone number, Epic mobile app, or authenticator app you plan to use available.
Fortnite uses the Epic account’s security controls. A password is one factor—something you know—while 2FA adds a code or approval from an app, email, or phone. It reduces the risk of takeover after a password is stolen or guessed, but it cannot compensate for a compromised email account, exposed recovery codes, malicious software, or a phishing session.
How to enable Fortnite 2FA
- Open the official Epic Games account and 2FA support page, then sign in.
- Open your profile or account area and select Account.
- Choose Password & Security.
- Scroll to Two-Factor Authentication.
- Choose Set up beside your preferred method.
- Complete the method-specific check: enter an email or SMS code, approve the Epic Authenticator number-match prompt, or enter the current code from a third-party authenticator app.
- Wait for the page to show that the method is active. Epic should also send a confirmation email.
- If you used an authenticator app, select Get Backup Codes and store them securely before leaving the page.
If you enable several methods, open the three-dot menu beside the one you want and select Make my primary 2FA method. The control labels above reflect Epic’s current support instructions; older guides may use labels such as “Enable Authenticator App.”
Which 2FA method should you choose?

Epic lists Google Authenticator, LastPass Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Authy among common third-party apps. These are examples Epic supports, not an official security ranking. For many people, an authenticator app is the most independent option; Epic Authenticator is convenient if you already use Epic’s mobile app. Email is reasonable when that mailbox has its own strong password and 2FA. Treat SMS mainly as a convenience or backup where Epic supports it.

Epic documents that SMS may display “SMS to this region is not supported.” If that happens, use email or an authenticator method rather than repeatedly requesting texts. Available options can also differ for child accounts.
Save backup codes before you need them
For an authenticator-app setup, choose Get Backup Codes in the authenticator section. Store the codes in a password manager or a secure offline location. Treat each code like a password: do not post it, place it in a shared note, send it in chat, or include it in a screenshot visible to others. Do this immediately, not after your phone is lost.

What 2FA changes in Fortnite
- Gifting: Epic says 2FA is required to send gifts in Fortnite.
- Competitive events: Epic says 2FA is required for participation. Event rules can still impose separate account, age, region, platform, or eligibility requirements, so 2FA alone does not guarantee entry.
- Sign-in checks: Epic may request verification on a new device, after 30 days without signing in, or after browser cookies are cleared. Prompt frequency varies with the device, browser state, sign-in method, and Epic’s security checks.
- Reward: Epic’s current account-security center says enabling 2FA grants the Boogie Down emote. This is a current Epic-stated reward; historical Save the World rewards should not be assumed to apply.

Email codes
- Check the email address displayed on the Epic account.
- Search spam, junk, promotions, and quarantine folders for official Epic messages.
- Make sure the mailbox is accessible and not over its storage limit.
- Do not request codes repeatedly in quick succession. Use the newest code; an older delayed message may no longer be valid.
SMS codes
- Confirm the number and country or region on the account.
- Check whether the carrier blocks automated or short-code messages.
- Wait for delivery before requesting another code.
- If Epic reports that SMS is unsupported in your region, switch to email or an authenticator app.
Authenticator codes
- Set the phone’s date and time to automatic synchronization.
- Confirm that the app entry belongs to the correct Epic account.
- Use a newly generated code rather than one close to expiration.
- Use a saved backup code if the authenticator device is unavailable.
- Do not delete the authenticator entry until another method or recovery route works.
Clock synchronization and checking the app entry are practical troubleshooting steps; Epic does not promise that either fixes every rejected code.

“An error occurred in our internal service”
Epic identifies the message “An error occurred in our internal service. Please try again in a few minutes” as a setup problem. Confirm that your email is verified, sign out and back in, retry later, use an updated supported browser, and temporarily disable extensions that interfere with account pages. If the selected method continues to fail, try another method and contact official Epic Player Support. None of these steps is guaranteed to resolve a service-side problem.

- You may be viewing the wrong Epic account. Recheck the account identity and linked console or platform accounts.
- The email may not be verified.
- Your account may have child or Cabined Account restrictions.
- Epic may have changed the account-page layout. Use its current support documentation rather than an old screenshot.
Epic says Cabined Account users can enable email or authenticator-app 2FA through Password & Security. SMS may remain unavailable until a parent or guardian completes the required account setup. Details are in Epic’s Cabined Accounts guidance.
If you lose your phone or delete the authenticator
- Use an Epic backup code, if you saved one.
- Otherwise use another active 2FA method.
- After signing in, add a replacement method, test it, and remove the inaccessible method.
- If no method or backup code remains, follow Epic’s official account-recovery and support process.
If the lost phone could expose your email or other accounts, secure the associated email immediately and change passwords from a trusted device. Enabling 2FA after an account has already been breached does not necessarily end an attacker’s active sessions or reverse unauthorized changes.

Secure the account beyond 2FA
- Use a unique Epic password and keep it private. Epic’s security guidance specifically recommends both.
- Protect the associated email account with its own strong password and 2FA.
- Never give anyone your Epic password, 2FA code, or backup code—including someone claiming to offer support, V-Bucks, a tournament invitation, or account recovery.
- Use only official Epic domains for sign-in and recovery. Fake “free V-Bucks” and giveaway pages can steal both passwords and current 2FA codes.
- Review linked accounts and unfamiliar activity after an unexpected code or sign-in alert, then contact Epic through its official support site if compromise is suspected.
- Do not save credentials or codes on a public or shared device.
