If Minecraft on your iPad says “Multiplayer is disabled,” the main fix is usually in the Microsoft/Xbox online-safety settings for the player’s account—not in iPad Settings. A parent or family organizer can allow multiplayer for a child account, then you can restart Minecraft and try again. iPad Minecraft is Bedrock Edition, so these are the relevant account controls.
Quick fix: allow multiplayer for the child account
- Close Minecraft on the iPad.
- In a browser, open Xbox Privacy & online safety settings and sign in with the parent’s or family organizer’s Microsoft account—not the child’s.
- Select the child’s account, then open Privacy or Xbox and Windows 10 devices Online Safety. Labels can vary between the website and app.
- Set You can join multiplayer games to Allow.
- If the child needs to play with people on other platforms, set You can join cross-network play to Allow.
- If the child needs to find or add players, set You can add friends and follow others to Allow.
- Review voice, text, and other communication permissions separately. Choose the level that fits your family’s preferences.
- Select Submit to save. On the iPad, sign out of Minecraft and back in if needed, then fully close and reopen the game.
Minecraft’s child-account multiplayer guidance says these account permissions apply even when the child plays on a device other than an Xbox. You do not need an Xbox console to change them.
Before changing settings
- iPad uses Bedrock Edition. Java Edition instructions and menus do not apply. Minecraft lists iOS phones and tablets as Bedrock devices in its account requirements.
- Use the Microsoft account that plays Minecraft. On the Minecraft title screen, choose the Microsoft account sign-in option and complete sign-in. An Apple ID and Microsoft account serve different purposes: the Microsoft account supports Minecraft features such as online multiplayer, friends, Realms, and cross-platform play.
- A parent or family organizer must manage a restricted child account. The child generally cannot override a family restriction from inside the game. If there is no adult associated with the child account, consult Microsoft’s family-group guidance. Child-account rules can vary by country or region.
- Keep the game current. Update Minecraft through the App Store if an update is available. Compatible Bedrock versions are needed for multiplayer.
Change permissions in the Xbox Family Settings app
The browser is not the only option. A parent can use the optional Xbox Family Settings app on a mobile device:

- Open Xbox Family Settings and sign in with the parent’s Microsoft account.
- Select the child’s account, then tap the Settings gear.
- Open the relevant privacy or online-safety categories and allow multiplayer, cross-network play, friend adding, or communication as needed.
- Return to Minecraft, sign out and back in if necessary, and restart the game.
The app is an alternative to the browser, not a requirement. The exact names and locations of options may differ by interface.

Choose only the permissions the player needs
These controls do different jobs, so allowing multiplayer alone may not enable every social feature:
- Join multiplayer games: The key setting for joining multiplayer sessions, Realms, and servers.
- Join cross-network play: Needed for play across platform networks, such as with friends on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, or PC. It is separate from the general multiplayer permission.
- Add friends and follow others: Lets the player find or add people through Minecraft’s Friends features. A player might be able to join an existing friend while still being unable to add new ones.
- Communication: Voice, text, invites, and communication outside Xbox are governed separately. Depending on the setting, choices may include options such as Everyone, Friends, or Only me. A family can allow multiplayer while limiting communication.

Make sure the specific world allows multiplayer
There are two layers to check: the Microsoft/Xbox account permission and the multiplayer setting for the particular Minecraft world. Allowing the account does not automatically open every world to other players.

To enable multiplayer for a world you host:
- In Minecraft, select Play, then open the Worlds tab.
- Select the pencil icon beside the world.
- Choose Multiplayer and turn on Multiplayer Game. Check the player-access setting as well.
- Start the world. Pause the game, open the Social screen, select Invite to Play, and invite the intended friends.
The available labels can vary by version. Minecraft’s world-hosting instructions explain the world-level setting and invitations.

Test by joining a friend
- Open Minecraft and select Play, then the Friends tab.
- Look under Joinable Friends and select the online friend’s gamertag.
The friend needs to be online, both players need compatible Bedrock versions, and they should have added each other as Minecraft friends. See Minecraft’s instructions for joining a friend’s world.

“Multiplayer is disabled” still appears
- Check that the parent changed permissions for the correct child account and selected Submit.
- Confirm that the child is signed into that same Microsoft account in Minecraft.
- Fully close and reopen Minecraft; returning to the iPad Home Screen may not be enough. If needed, sign out of the Microsoft account in Minecraft and sign in again.
- Update Minecraft and restart the iPad, then test again.
The child can join friends but cannot add anyone
Check You can add friends and follow others. Friend management is separate from permission to join multiplayer.

Xbox friends work, but Nintendo, PlayStation, or other-platform friends do not
Check You can join cross-network play in addition to the general multiplayer permission. All players still need compatible Bedrock versions and their own online access.

Confirm both players use Bedrock, are signed in to Microsoft accounts, have added each other as Minecraft friends, and are running compatible versions. The friend must also be online to appear under Joinable Friends. Check the account’s multiplayer and friend permissions, and ask the host to confirm that multiplayer is enabled for the world.

The child can join but cannot chat
Review voice and text communication settings separately. A parent can allow multiplayer while restricting who can communicate with the child. Minecraft explains these controls in its online communication guidance.
A Realm cannot be joined
Check You can join multiplayer games, and allow cross-network play if relevant. Confirm that the Realm owner invited the Microsoft account the child actually uses in Minecraft. Minecraft’s Realms guidance covers account permissions related to joining.
Others cannot enter the child’s world
Check the world’s own Multiplayer Game setting and player-access option, not just the account permissions. Then invite the players from the running world.
Permissions look right, but connections still fail
First verify that the host is online if it is a regular hosted world; the host of a Realm does not need to remain online for guests to play. Then test a stable connection and consider whether a school, workplace, parental network filter, router firewall, custom DNS, or port configuration could be blocking the connection. These are possible causes, not proof that a particular setting is wrong. Minecraft’s Bedrock connectivity troubleshooting covers updates, account permissions, host settings, and network issues.
Does iPad multiplayer require a paid console subscription?
No Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo console online-service subscription is required merely because the player is using an iPad. Do not buy a console subscription to resolve an iPad account-permission restriction. The relevant first checks are the Microsoft account permissions, the world’s multiplayer setting, and the connection.
