To change the Steam Overlay for just one game, open Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → General, then toggle Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. This per-game control lets you configure a title without changing the setting for every game. The instructions are in Steam’s desktop client; Windows 10 does not have a separate overlay switch.
Enable or disable the overlay for one game
- Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
- Right-click the game you want to configure and choose Properties.
- On the General tab, find Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Turn the control on to enable the overlay, or off to disable it. Steam may show this control as a switch rather than a traditional checkbox.
- Close Properties. If the game is already running, exit it and launch it again for the change to take effect.
Use this game-specific setting when only one title has a problem or needs the overlay. Steam’s overlay FAQ describes the per-game control in the game’s Properties window.
Test whether the overlay is active
Launch the game from your Steam Library and press Shift + Tab, Steam’s default overlay shortcut. If the Steam interface opens, the overlay is working for that session. The overlay can expose features such as friends, chat, invitations, guides, and screenshots, though available features and how a game uses the overlay can vary.
If Shift + Tab does nothing, open Steam → Settings → In Game and check the shortcut shown there; it may have been changed. Also confirm that the game was launched through Steam and that you changed the setting for the correct game.

Change the overlay setting for all games
For a general default rather than a change to one title, open Steam → Settings → In Game and toggle Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. Steam also provides a separate control in each game’s Properties. If your goal is to change only one game, use that game-specific control and check it directly rather than relying on the global setting.
Troubleshoot an overlay that will not open
Work through these checks in order. After each change, launch the game again and test with the shortcut.

- Check both Steam settings. Confirm the global control under Steam → Settings → In Game and the title’s control under Library → right-click game → Properties → General. Steam exposes both; checking both helps rule out a disabled setting.
- Close and relaunch the game. A setting change may not affect a game that is already running.
- Exit and restart Steam. Use Steam → Exit, then open Steam again. Steam recommends restarting the client when overlay-related functionality is not working in its overlay and controller troubleshooting guidance.
- Start the game from the Steam Library. A game started directly from its executable may not attach to Steam as expected. For a non-Steam game, Steam’s instructions for adding a non-Steam game describe choosing + Add a Game… → Add a Non-Steam Game…, adding the game or launcher, and then starting it from the Library. This can help test Steam launching but does not guarantee full overlay compatibility.
- Check for another launcher overlay. If the game starts through a publisher’s launcher, open that launcher’s settings, find its in-game overlay option, and temporarily disable it. Restart the launcher and game before testing. Steam notes that an external launcher overlay can take priority over Steam’s.
- Close possible conflicting software temporarily. Steam lists examples including Razer Synapse, XInput emulators, Fraps, Skype or Skypehost, MSI Afterburner, ASUS AI Suite, and ZoneAlarm. This is not a complete list, and any one of these programs is not necessarily a problem on every PC. Close likely candidates one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Restart Windows and update drivers. If the overlay opens but is unresponsive, restart the PC, close unnecessary background applications, and make sure Windows and hardware drivers are current. Then test again.
If the overlay still fails, the title may have a game-specific compatibility issue. Display mode can also matter for some games, but it is not a universal fix; Steam has published a game-specific example of overlay-related problems involving windowed mode and rendering. Treat changing display mode as a test for that title, not a general Steam requirement.
Non-Steam games and games with another launcher
A shortcut added to Steam is not the same as a Steam-native game, and Steam warns that non-Steam or retail titles—especially those involving another launcher—may have overlay problems. Adding one to the Library and launching it there is a useful test, not a promise that Steam Overlay will work with every game.

When a title starts through another launcher, you may be dealing with two separate overlays. Disabling Steam Overlay will not necessarily remove an overlay supplied by the publisher, Windows, a graphics driver, or another application. If the conflict is specific to the other launcher, disable that launcher’s overlay instead of changing Steam’s setting for every game.
When to disable the overlay—and what changes
Disabling Steam Overlay is a reasonable troubleshooting step if invoking it crashes a game, causes a rendering problem, interferes with input, or conflicts with another launcher. It may help with a particular title, but it is not a guaranteed performance fix. Some Steam game support pages recommend disabling the overlay for particular compatibility problems; those recommendations apply to those games, not to all Steam titles.

With the overlay off for a game, the visible Steam interface will not open in that game, so overlay-dependent chat, guides, invitations, screenshots, and other in-game features may be unavailable. Steam’s desktop client, Library, downloads, and account functions remain separate. Some controller configurations rely on overlay support, so behavior can vary by game and setup; disabling the overlay does not automatically mean that every Steam Input feature is disabled.

Return to Library → right-click the game → Properties → General, turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game, close Properties, and restart the game. If you had disabled the global setting as well, restore it under Steam → Settings → In Game. Steam’s client-support notice says the client supports Windows 10 and later, effective January 1, 2024; this is an operating-system support boundary, not a different overlay procedure for Windows 10.
