To enable Fortnite voice chat, open the in-game menu, select Settings, then open the Audio tab and review the voice-chat options. Set who can communicate with you, then choose Party Chat to talk with your Epic party or Game Chat to talk with players in the same island instance when that island supports it. Exact labels can vary by interface and update; Epic also places communication controls under Profile > Settings > Communication. Epic’s voice chat guide
Turn on voice chat and choose who can hear you
- Open Fortnite’s in-game menu and select Settings.
- Open the Audio page. Review the voice-chat settings and hover over options to read their tooltips before changing them.
- Set the communication audience. Epic lists Everybody, Friends, Team Members, and Connections, Friends Only, and Off. The available choices may be limited by parental controls or account settings.
- Choose Party Chat or Game Chat, depending on whom you want to reach.

Choose the right chat channel

Check age, account, and parental restrictions
- Epic says chat settings default to Off when a player has indicated they are under 18; children under 10 are limited to Friends Only. A parent or guardian may need to adjust parental controls, and those controls can impose additional limits. Epic’s party and chat guide
- A cabined account cannot use voice or text chat until the parent or guardian completes the required consent process. The child should ask the parent or guardian managing the account rather than try to bypass the restriction. Epic’s support guidance Epic’s cabined-account explanation
- If the audience is set to Off, voice and text chat are disabled; a more restrictive parental setting can also prevent communication.
Fix voice chat when it still does not work
- Confirm the channel. Make sure you and your friends are using the same relevant channel: Party Chat for the Epic party, or Game Chat for players together in a supported island. Epic voice chat troubleshooting
- Leave console party chat. Epic says Xbox or PlayStation Party Chat can prevent Fortnite voice chat from working. Leave the console party even if nobody else is in it. Epic’s troubleshooting article
- Recheck permissions. Verify the Fortnite audience setting, parental controls, and account status. Cabined accounts need guardian consent before chat becomes available.
- On PC, check the selected devices and microphone access. In Fortnite’s audio settings, select the microphone input and speakers or headphones you are actually using. Ensure Windows allows Fortnite to access the microphone, and check whether Push-to-Talk is enabled if you expect the mic to transmit without pressing a key. Epic voice chat troubleshooting
- On PlayStation 5, check the game-voice mute control. In PS5 Sound controls, turn off Mute Game Voice Chat, then restart Fortnite. Epic voice chat troubleshooting
- On Xbox, review privacy settings. Check communication and cross-network privacy settings that may restrict voice chat. Epic also documents router UPnP/NAT troubleshooting, but treat network changes as an advanced step after checking the channel, permissions, console party, and devices. Epic voice chat troubleshooting
- On Nintendo Switch while docked, check the headset connection. Epic notes that a 3.5 mm headset may cause problems in docked mode; it suggests a USB receiver, USB headset, or USB-to-3.5 mm adapter for that situation. This is a specific docked-connection fix, not a general requirement. Epic voice chat troubleshooting
A new headset is not automatically necessary: first confirm that your current microphone and audio output are selected, connected, and working. Epic’s menu and troubleshooting details can change, so consult its live support article if a label or control differs on your platform.
